"I've feeu that Pin-'a fore, ' said the fish to the Mhill boy, as he nibbled the bait from his hock. Sheiiff Manning ia in Washington City. He went thither to join in the fes'ivitics of the Randall men. A happy mother of male twins enthu siastically refers to her treasures as her "sweet boy and boy." , Good nice black jack wood was being offered at $2 per cord from the flats this morning. Cheap enough. But few of our merchants have yet returned from the Northern cities while some of them have not yet gone. The poor and humble, alike with the rich and powerful, find in Dr. Bull s Cough Syrup a true, tried and trusted friend. Price 26 cents a bottle. The notes of the bagpipe are again heard in the land, and the small boy finds it inconvenient io keep in the house when the band begins to play. The ice men are going around saying the ice is so thick they cannot cut it with out being put to great expense, conse quently ice will be dear next summer. Mrs. Spertner advertises her removal in this issue of the Review. In her new location she is better prepared to do work and has a large variety of patterns for our lady readers to select from. We learn from good authority that the school bill which recently passed both houses of the Legislature failed to become a law be.ause it was not signed by the presiding officers. This is to be regretted very much. True Economy- Jt has beeu found that the orly true econcniy is that which stops the little leaks and saves in trifles. For instance, one saves in milk, butter, eggs and flour by the use of Dooley's Yeast Powdeb, which is made from the purest cream tar tar, derived from grape juice. Good house wives have proved this by experience. Receipts of Tar, The receipts of tar to-day foot op 1,32 barrels. This is the largest receipts on any one day since the fifteenth day of April, 1878, and yet the market continues steady at the recent advance. We hope that it will not only continue steady but con tinue to advance. i Vnmailable The following is a list of unmailable letters remainiug in the Pos't Qflke in this city: Me3rs. Thurs-diy is, we believe, the day on which the law in regard to running trains on Sunday is to date from. Singularly enough, if we are correctly informed, the law makes no reference to steamboats and steamships but is only operative a? to r.ulroad. Sunday, by legislative en actment, is to be kuowu hereafter as only exteadin" from sunrise to sunet. The Pauper community. There was a brand new baby at the Poor House on yesterday, but to-eay it was brought in town by a lady who was willing to adopt it. The mother applied for a room about an hour before its birth, but was refuse 1 because of her not having the proper certificate. Superintendent Qarrell was compelled to accomm:date her, however, and yesterday the County Commissioners granted her a permit to remain in the Poor House for one month. Tuba Rosa. We saw to-day at Mr. Newbury's, on North Water street, a lot of tube rose bulbs, raised by that gentleman in his gardens at Magaolia and which are of fered for sale. Tbey are the finest bulbs wc ever saw, were grown in this climate and are therefore fully acclima'ed and ean be sold for one-half of the price asked by Northern dealers. Mr. Newbury has, we underatai d, three acres in tube roses every year. Relief From a Corn. Soak the foot in warm water for a quarter of an hour every night; after each soaking, rub on the corn patiently, with the finger, a half dozen drops of sweet oil; wear around the toe during the day two thicknesses of buckskin with a hole in it te receive the corn, and continue this treatment until the corn falls out. If you wear moderately loose shoes it will be months and even years before the corn returns, when the same treatment will be efficier t in a few days. Paring corns lis always dangerous, besides making them Cake deeper root, a does weed cut off near the ground; but the plan ad vised is safe, painless, and costs nothing but a little attention. The North t arollna Hand Book. We have examined the "Hand Book of North Carolina," a copy of which we have received through the courtesy of Col. L. It. Polk, Commissioner of Agriculture and ce.npiler of the work. It contains much information which is valuable not only to the citizens of the State, but also to any resident of any other State who may contemplate removing hither. As its name implies, it is emphaticaPy a "Hand Book," and is full of interesting matter connected with the history, geography physiography, fertility, and people of the State. It is a marvel of conciseness. We notice one error which is undoubtedly typographical. John H., and not John K. Steele, was the name of the North Carolinian who became Governor of New Hampshire in 1844. Innocence Abroad. A gentleman residing on Market street has been trying his hand at raising ban tam chickens and succeeded at last in set ting a hen in a barrel filled nearly to the top with straw. An old cat in the neigh borhood liked the net and deposited four squirming felines in it. The gentleman has a son about six years of age, who is always on the lookout for something miraculous anddiscovered the bantam hen, two eggs and four kittens in the nest. He carried the kittens in the house and tried to sell the eggs, which he was posi tive were cat eggs, but could not tell whether they were wild or tame cat's eggs. Pater fatnilia8 discovered his loss when too late, as young America failing to find a purcha'er had broken the eggs to see what color the kittens were in them. The old gent has given up trying to raise ban tam chickens but he raised that boy, turned him down and trumped the trick with his right bower. That boy prefers to walk around or stand up and never sits down unless he can strike a feather pillow. ; Steamer Clinton, Capt. Bisby, arrived here to-day with a cargo of 6 19 barrels of turpentine, tar and rosin from Banner mann's Bridge in Pender county. A pretty good freight for the little G.inUn, Mr. Ellenhans, formerly engineer of the . steamship J. l'sU, is now boss of the engine-room of the steam yacht Pustpori. He is an A No. 1 engineer and comes highly recommend ed. Here's Bock Spring water ter yer. i I i! t T - Review. County Commissioners.
