Th re was a report in very general cir culation on the streets to-day to the effect that several men were drowned near Meares Bluff nn Saturday night by the upsetting of a boat. We have made dili gent inqnir.sjibout the matter, but were unable to trace it to any reliable source. Through the courtesy of the officers of the isavasea Guano Oompauy of this city we were permitted to telephone the Bluff but juld scertain nothing there. Personal We acknowledge the pleasure of a visit this morning from Mr. George E. Pittman, editor and propri etor of the sprightly little Nut Shell which is published daily at Newborn. It always gives us pleasure to meet witn those whom we knew in the times that tried men's souls, and Mr. Pittman is one whom the writer knew when the sur roundings were not so pleasing or agree able a3 the circumstances under which we viewed each other to-day. Our genial friend Mr. E. Conklin, i the Raleigh Observer, was in town last night and left on the train this morning for Columbia, S. O. The Southern Railway and Steamship Association met in Augusta, Thursday, for the purpose of reorganizing and fixing freight rates. The attendance was- rery large. The association is holding its ses sions at the Plantei's Hotel. The com. mittees on division of business were en gaged in making a recast, but were unable to agree, and the old arrangement will stand until re-arranged by tfie general commissioners, to whom the whale matter is referred, under tbe rules of the associa tion, in case of a disagreement among the committees. On Friday the association was to have been engaged in fixing freight rates, and reports from the several committees were expected. Col. A. Pope, of this city, Gen eral Freight Agent of the Atlantic Coast Line, was in attendance, representing the interests of his line in the meeting. Outrageous. On Saturday last some (light or ten young lads congregated in front of the residence of Dr. John D. Bellamy, on the corner of Market and Fifth streets, and indulged in the pastime of throwing each other's hats over into the garden, which, by the way, is one of the finest flower gar dens in the city, and one in which the Doctor and his family take great pleasure and upon which they have expended con siderate time and money. Of course, the boys must go into the garden after their hats as they were thrown over, and as they did so, they would break off some of the fiuest tiowers to be found, au 1 in this way the garden wa.s despoiled oi nearly all its valuable and choicest kinds and many other plants were trampleu and broken down so that they were com pletely ruined. These acts of vandalism were done by these who have ' had the advantage of better teaching, and who have been surrounded by the refining in fluences of cultivated homes and the tender solicitude of cultured parental af fection. We sincerely hope far the benefit of all concerned that these thought less hut wicked aets may not be repeated. Saturday night between the hours of eleven and twelve, Dick Crawford, color ed, took a canoe at the foot of Market street to start across the river to his dom icile. The water was very rough, and as Dick had been drinking he was admon ished by tho.e standing around not to venture across in his frail era t. He was determined and paid no attention to the advice of his friends. After placing some parcels in tbe boat he then started for the opposite bank of the river and when he had about reached it, his cries for help, rent the air. Persons on the west bank of the river ran to his assistence but ar rived after the treacherous waters of the Cape Fear had stopped his cries. As the boat in which he tmbarked has not been seen since the fatal accident it is not known whether it capsized or he missed his footing in gettisg out. The deceased was fibout thirty years of age and has been for a long time a ferryman plying from the Market dock to the dock of the cause -v ay opposite the city. . Indications. War. A Park or Place of Resort Needed Wilmington needs most sadly a public park or place of resort, where those who are compelled from sheer necessity to toil from "early dawn to dewy eve," from Monday morning until Saturday night, m-.y. on Sunday afternoon, seek a little recreation by a sniff of fresh air or at. inhalation of the perfume of fragrant flowers or plants while the eye rests upon a change of scene not incident to the regular routine of daily life.
