Colored silk corsages, worn with white dresses will be a favorite style this sum mer. Very often men cut their love teeth, as they do their wisdom teeth, very late in life. A w g thinks jumping the rope to be tripping the light fantastic toe. Hemp- possible. Brother McD iarmid , of the Rotteaonian, who is in the city, paid us a pleasant little visit this morning. Netted handkerchiefs for neck wear are shown in all desirable shades: they are very light and dressy. If you won't listen to reason when you are young you will get your knuckles rapped when you are old. If you wish to be as happy as a king look at those who haven't as much as you, not those who have more There's no special style of engraving engagement rings. A spider's web with a fly in it is a very pretty device, i The steamer Passport .took down a large party this morning to Smithville to the dedicatory services held tkeie. today. It is a pretty piece ol sentiment when a young man gives a lock of his hair to his girl, He doesn 't recognize the sen timent after they are married, when she happens to help herself toj ft lock or two. A Wilmington girl, who fought to know, accounts for the disposition of tho aver age ywting fellow to put his arm around a girl's waist by the supposition that be is look iug for the rib that was taken from him so long ago. I . An agricultural school ifor girls has been provided lor by the Micnigan Leg islature, and $12 000 have been appro nriated to eive the venture a start. This c o is law-making in the interest of hamani ty. This is something practical, you know. Street suits this season are almost in variably short enough to swing clear 'of mud aud dust and to show the pretty boots which .-.re the order of the day The usual width of a short skirt at the bottom is two and a half yards; very tall ladies have them a quarter of a yard wider very short ladies as much nar ro ver than this. At Smithville To Day. A special to the Review from Smith ville says that there is a largecrowd pres ent and that the dedicatory 'proceedings were ' interesting in the extreme. There was a profusion of rtawers and the decorations were very fine. Rev. E. A. Yates, who was appointed to deliver the dedicatory address, spoke about thirty minuies, and his eloquent and beau tiful remarks were .listened to ith iapt attention by the large concourse present. The affair was highly successful in every Daily WILMINGTON, N. C. THURSDAY, MAY Not Coming. We learu that Mrs. M..on and Mi8" Painter, the Quakeress revivalists, who have held very successful revival mertU.s in several portions of the State, have been invited to this city to hold a series of meeiiogs in the Kifth Srreet M. E Church, but that they have fouud it impossible to accept the iuvitation at present. It i poesiblo, however, that thy may come here sometiore in the near future. City Court. Jno. Williams, a stammering daikey, who was arrested last night for disorderly couduct on Pigeon Hill, in the neighbor hood of the Long House, 'was arraigned this morning before the Mayor. He was aiso fined for carryiug a concealed wea pon in the shape of a razor. On account of the last named offence Mayor Fishblate dealt pretty severely with the defendant and required him to pay $20 line or go to the cell for twenty days. The eulprit was furnished lodging. - Proposed Change of Base Where are we all going this Summer is now the all absorbing topic iu some social circles in this city? The answer is that a few, or probably a great majority of those who leave at ail will tramp off to the Sound, others by steamer to Smith ville, some by the railroads to the moun tains and still a few more to the big "nor'ard" while some of us may "go to glory" per hap?,while still a few, a very few, others may go to fed 1 i.e. i they haven't already gone there. For ourselves, well, we aro satisfied with this climate tor the present. Almost a Fire. There was a narrow escape from a dan gerous accident to persons and a con flagration last night, about 8 o'clock, at the residence of Mr. Alexander Sholar, on Fifth, between Church and Nun streets. While the family were at supper a kero sene lamp exploded, but fortunately it had been placed at some distance from where any one was sitting and no one was injured. The fragments of the lamp were gathered up and thrown in the street, and with a few moments of very lively work the flames were extinguished, and but little damage was dons, ihough a big scare was created, as might be expected. Be very careful of kerosene, for its price eternal vigilance and 20 cents a gal lon. A Close Schedule Wanted. We are reminded by a friend on the line of the O. C. R. W. that the schedule now in effect on that road doesn't "ge very well with that run by the steamer Passport. The train trom the West ar rives here at 9:50 am. arjd the fassjort'x hour for sailing is 9 o'clock. Even on occasions of excursion parties the steamer rarelv leaves her dock later that 9:30. It would be to the advantage of all parties ml we think, that a close schedule should be made between the steamer aud the trains, so that parties from along the line of the C. C. it. W. who may desire) to take a trip to the forts "may leave their homes in the morning and return to them the same night. Honor the Scissors. Some people, ignorant of what good editiug is, imagine the getting up of te- lected ma' ter to be the easiest work in the world to do, whereas it is the nicest work that is done on paper. If they see the editor wi h scissors in his hand they are sure to say: Eb! that s the way you get up original matter?' accompanying their new and witty question with an idiotic wink or smile. The facts are, t hat the interest, the variety and the tiseful ness of a paper depend in no small de gree upon its selected matter, and few men are capable of the f position who would not themselves be able to write many of the articles they select. A sen sible editor desires considerable selected rnattcr, because he knows that one mind cannot make as good a paper as five or six. The Lecture Last Evening. An audience, more respectable in ap preciation than in numbers, attended last evening, the lecture before the young gentlemen of the Pnilomatbean Literary Society, by that eminent scholar, Prof. Von Jasmund. The theme selected was "Bismark and Germany" and we are as sured that those who weie not there missv el a genuine treat. A StroHg Cement. Ti:e Editor sat in his easy chair, ab sorbed in study profound, while the local was tramping now here and now there, to see if a dot could be found, by which he mUht tell of a frolic or fight, a runaway horse or a scene in the courts; but news, like mouey, was terribly tight.and e'en the market reports, like verything else were fearfully slow and spirits, and rosin and ttr could only claim prices ruinously low, that plead to the profits a bar.
