Samposn, of this city, was at Augusta, Ga., recently where he dehv ered the address to the colored people on the occasion of the celebration of the adoption of the Fifteenth Amendment to the Constitution. In the coarse of his remarks he (ave some excellent advice to bis people relative to the exodus move ment, advising tkem, by all means, to remain where they are, and to rely upon those among whom they have been raised and upon whom they can always rely for advice and assistance, rather than to remove themselves to a climate which is unfitted for them and to cast their fortunes among a people who have no interest in common with them, who know nothing of their wants and necessities and capacities and who even at the best, receive them with coldness and distrust. His remarks have been extensively copied and commended by the Georgia papers. Dolly Browning in Raleigh Yesterday's Raleigh Observer says ; "We don't know anybody that is more liked than Capt. E. D. Browning, and we don't know of anybody that is more widely known, but the hearty attention that he received yesterday from everyone must have made him feel proud. He sticks so close to his business that nobody expects to see him except at Wilmington or Weldon, or on the line, but when he was discovered in the Yarborough House dining room yes terday the 'Governor had to give him a good hand -shaking, and his friends, the Secretary of State, and Capt. Dudley, and a whole lot of other friends adjourned over to his table. Dr.Blacknall was delighted, and a gentleman remarked, as the Doctor walked down the room to welcome him : "I nevei saw him do that for a U . S. Sen ator." Since 1855 Capt. Browning has been on the Wilmington and Weldon road. He is a good man who loves his friends, and his friends love him, and they will feel better if he will come this way oftener. Point Caswell Items. From an esteemed correspondent we learn that on Thursday last, (the 29th inst.) at Point Caswell Pender county, the closing exercises of the school taught by Miss L. H. Fray ser, were held, and that the citizens turn ed out en maast to witness the progress made by the pupils during the session. Old and young, of both sexes and of all conditions, forsook for the time the every-day duties and cares of life to do honor to the occasion. It was a sort of scholastic jubilee and literary gala day in which the young lads and lasses of thevil lage were the actorsand actresses while their parents.guardians, friends and rela tives were delighted spectators. The school room was tastefully embell ished with mottoes bearing the inscriptions "Love," Hope' "Charity, "andKnowL edge " "The Cross, bearing the Latin maxim, ATt7 nisi cruce, (No dependence but on the cross) was singularly beautiful. There were many other mottoes and maxims which were all chaste and ap propriate, but which we have not space to enumerate. The recitations, declamations and com positions were very commendable and evinced the patience, perseverance and industry with which the instructress had a. tended to her arduous and perplexing duties as well as to make manifest the intelligence of the pupils. The entire MQMUMa refWtMl nnrJi CTfldit man both teacher and pupils and should be a source of pride to the people. The caps of wharves, porticos of ofti es, and sheds, were lined with spectators. The steamers PaMpeW and Is! were gaily decorated in the na tional colors and followed the yacht? through the race. The Ripple passed the Lizzie, Bonnie Lassie and Qlpsy. The Frolic's rigging gave way and the Ripple passed her to the windward. The lower buoy was rounded in the fol lowing order: Rosa, Restless, Ripple, Bonnie Lassie and Lizzie. The Rosa led the Restless by three minutes and the Ltipple by four. After rounding the buoy the Ripple ran up a topsail and shortened the gap between her and the Restless. Quick Dispatch of Business. It is a fact worthy of note and public mention that the prosecution of buiiness by His Honor Judge Meares, of the Crim inal Court, during the sittings oi his Court, is untiring in behalf of the publi. interest and as near as is consistent with lignity and justice in behalf of private interests also where it is right so to do, ic e., we mean that the Ju Jge.dues not keep witnesses from the county and the oity in attendance upon any case day after day when there is a possibility of disposing of the case by an energetic effort to bring the case to trial and in this way save the county unnecessary expense. In his efforts in this directioa Judge Meares is ably seconded by the officers of the Court We mean to write in no fulsome manner upon this subject, for we have no interest at stake further thin the public weal. Bat we simply deem it a matter of in terest to our readers as well as justice to the Court and the officers of the same to remark upon the rapidity with which business is dispatched by this tribunal. Athalia Last Night. As previously announced the young lady pupils connected with the Academy of the Incarnation presented Racine's beautiful drama of Athalia last night at the Academy Hall, j The drama was put upon the stage ii excellent style and the impersonations of the several characters eviueed a decided histrionic talent on the part of the dram atis personam. The drama is religious iu its nature and the characters and plot are both taken from the Scriptures. The manner in which the piece was J rendered showed not ouly the thorough training t which the pupils had been subjected, but that the different performers had become imbued with the spirit of tne author, thus giving a correct and vivid interpreta tion the meaning intended to be conveyed. It was a truly delightful entertainment, and it was highly appreciated by the large audience of refined intelligence which wa present on the occasion. Decoration Day.
