Justice lo the Mexican Veterans. It mav be of interest to the veterans of the Mexican war residing in Wilaungtoi and vicinity, to know that the Committee of the House of Representatives, on Invalid Pensions,have agreed to report a bill grant. lng pensions to all the surviving soldiers of this war, and their widows without riistiMftion as to nolitical principles. The bill directs the Secretary of the Interior to place on the pension roll 'tho names cl surviving officers and enlisted menjnclud. in militia and volunteers of the military and naval services of the United States, who served 60 days in the war of 1S40 and 1S47 with ilexico. An effort will be made to pass it at the present session of Con gress. The act allows a pension of $8 per month, but does not apply to any person who is receiving a pension at that rate, but if his pension is less than that he shall receive enough to make it $8 per month. AH persous entitled to the pen' sion shall receive it from the passage of the act during their natural lives. Before a pension is allowed proof shall be sub mitted of his or her right to it, and any nprsnn makincr a false oath shall be stricken from the roll. The loss of a cer tificate of discharge shall not deprive a person of the benefits of the act, but other evidence shall be sufficient, ?and a land warrant granted on account of honorable service shall be taken as sufficient evi dence, unless it can be proven that the warrant was fraudulently obtained. The provisions of sections 4,745. 4,74, 4,747, 4 748 and 4,760 of the Revised Statutes, are made part of the act so far as they are applicable, and no laws now in force in conflict with this act shall be applicable !o the survivors of the war named, or be so construed as to deprive them of the benefits of the act. Section 4,716 of the Revised Statutes is repealed, and the act does not apply to any person while under the political diaabilit es imposed by the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitu tion. Melton, of the Second Street Market, has devised a very nice arrange ment for keeping meats fresh and sweet during the summer months. By means of a large quantity of ice, generally about one thousand pounds, which, however, do not touch the meats, beef, lamb, veal, &c.may be kept cool and fresh for a week at a uniform temperature of fifty degrees.
