He delights in literature, and manages t keep pace with current publications. The composer of 'The Chimes of Nor mandy" is er g iged on a nt w comic opera on a military subject. It ia proposed to bring it out simultaneous'y next, fall in London, Paris and New York. The question as to whether the elevat ed railroads in New York can be taxed a8 real estate in at last settled. Judge Bar rett rendered a decision that su h proper" ty wau taxable a few months ago and the roads rook an appeal, '.'u Wednesday the Supreme Court affirmed the decisicn of Judge Barrett. The Mormon inistiicnarks count one hundred and twenty-eigbt fresh victims, who arrived at New York eu route to Utah on Wednesday. They are com posed of Irish, Swiss, Scotch, English ai.d Welsh. They report that three more batches are about to sail from Europe. Mr. James Gordon Bei nett has pur chased one thousand acres of land in the Saw Mill River Valley, one of the out lying districts ot New York, on which, it is said, he designs erecting a large number of unpretentious houses for occu pancy by workingmen. Prince Napoleon Jerome Bonaparte has a veritable museum of Napoleonic relics. There is the sabre worn by the great Emperor at the battle of Marengo, a sil ver dressing-case which he gave to King Jerome, the little threecornered hat, and the field glass with which he watched his battles. The population of the three South American Republics now engaged in war, does not exceed 7,000,000 altogether, more than onehalf of which, perhaps consists of uncivilized Indians. Each of the three is cvor head and ears in debt and cannot obtain credit, so that it is not likely the conflict will be of long duration. Gen Thomas Ewing sent the following dispatch upon being notified of his nom ination for Governor of Ohio by the Dem ocrats: 'I accept and thank the Democra cy of Ohio for the distinguished and un sought honor conferred upon me. Vic tory will crown our stuggle for the supre inacy of freemen over the dollar aud the bayonet.' A Parliamentary return has been issued of the number of communicants in each parish in Scotland for the year 1878, in cluded iu the roll prepare 1 by the Kirk Session in conformity with the regulations of the General Assembly. The number was 218,411 men and 297. 3T5 women. Population m 1871, 3,360,018. Boston is now being paved with the asphalt block in place of other paving material. This block weighs twentyone pounds, aud is five iuches deep and four inches square superficially. Its bae is pulverized limestone, which is cemented by asphaltum and crude petroleum. The blocks are struck out by a steam pretp and each block has a pressure of fifty tons. Aud now the question arises, "Does General Grant know his own baptismal designation or not His correct appella tion is said to be Hiram Simpson (irant, but when he ottered West Point he regis tered as "U. On long voyages er journeys by land in latitudes adjacent to the equator, it is especially useful as a pre ventive of the febrile complaints and disor ders of the stomach, liver and bowels, which are apt to attack natives of the temperate zones, sojourning or traveling in such re gions, and is an excellent protection against the influence of extreme cold, sudden changes of temperature, exposure to damp or extreme fatigue. It not only prevents intermittent and remittent fever, and other diseases of u malarial type, but eradicates them, a fact which has been notorious for year? ja.-T in North and outh America, Mexico, the West Indies, Austr lia and i other c imates . 8i0 0u same i" hi i77. and ijoo0,475 a same date iu J b7o Tuese figures sho w a decrease in'the visjible supply as'couipared with last year ol -j'-,"'or bales; e icjius pared with the supply of Sjlflat same, date .t decrease of 130,373 bales, and as: com pared with the viaible supply iu 170 at same date, a decrease of 869,108 bales. A dry month h is enabled planters to clean the fields thor oughly, and the cotton plant is strong and healthy. XiW FASHIONED PATRIOTS. Charles Foster staid at home and made money during the war, and"! he is a patriot such as the Republicans of Ohio want for Governor of the State. Gene ral Ewing went to the war and did brilliant service in the field, but now he is a traitor. At least, so say the Re publican journals. Every Democrat it now a traitor, whatever may have been his previous record, or wherever he may have r esided. There were no Democrats in the Northern army; they were all Re publicans. So say Republican journa's and speakers. j These are the wails land howls of the evil spirits which lead and guide the footsteps of a party which, in the full ness cf power, has made itself detestablt and detested, and . deserving ef the anathemas of every well-wisher of his country; of a party whose oppressions rasealtties and violations of every princi ple of right and justice have ineffaceably stamped its infamous record uon the hearts of the American people. By what right, we ask in all candor and fa:ruess, does the Republican party claim to be the only party of patriots in the laud, or by what priujjiple of right do they claim to be patriots at ali? Has the party manifested a patriotic feeling to wards a.iy section of tljie country? Has it betrayed in a single instance a national feeling or sentinieut? l'a th.re, in 4ts whole course of policy, one single ida beyond a narrow niihjded sectionalism ? it there is or hasjbeen able to disco v r tbje fact hvtry word oitjbe debates in the present C ngrcss aud the hue which preceded it cans, has demonstrated lificatiou, vituperation, falsification and maligcjant abuse of the South and the Democijatic party at the Xvrth has been its only stock in' trade. The South, especially, Ihs been the Nazareth from which no good could come and there was no perrod during the war when acrimony aud bitterness and mean ness were indulged with more vindictive hatred than have been hurled at our de voted heads within the Ipast year. Every Democratic Senator and Representative in Congress, from whatever -tsection of the country, has beeu denounced in the bitr terest terms by the press aud speakers, and every p ece ic legislation proposed for thej ; benefit of the whole couutry and (or all its people has beeu distorted aud perverted to ap. pear as revolutionary and treasonable.
