The tops of long kid gloves are em broidered, the embroidery also following the outer seam on the back of the arm. A new material foi trimming summer costumes is the Oriental summer velvet in damasse brocade, which conies in all the new colors. It calls for great r.s jiation in the youQg man who parts his hair in the middie to have it cut so short. There 'il be no more parting there. "Tho Great ComnDuwe alth Circus Equescurriculum and Nelson'sPantomime Company" (too much name) is booked for Portsmouth on Thursday. Black is the color most worn by Parisian as well as New York ladies, aud it is sometimes difficult to determine whether they are in 'mourning or not. A quite new material of silk and wool, with an interceptible stripe, makes up into beautiful costumes, witn small figured brocade, in a rich Persian or hell pattern. The fifch of the series of Family Ex cursions given by Pruf. Agostini will take place on the Passport . on Friday next. Particulars will be found in ad vertisement published elsewhere. A great many remedies are advertised to bring them before the public, who de cide whether the article is good or bad. The gooil reputation which Dr. Bull's Baby Syrup enjoys is a standing guaran tee of its merits. Price 25 cents. We understand that the Comet Concert Club will give a moonlight excursion down the rivor some evening next week, near the full of the moon. Fuller partic ulars will be announced' in advertisement in a day or two. The Llillsboro Recorder has been re moved t J Durham and makes its urst ap pearance from that town this week. Capt. Cameron promises new type and a new dress and we think that he is bound to do well. Durham ought to support two weekly papers handsomely. ' indications Wak Depart 'ME NT, f A Officer !4, 1879. I uj Medical Journal. We have received from the editors the June number of the North Carolina Med ical Journal, which has just been issued from the press, the delay having been for the purpose of embracing the reports of the Medical Society of North Carolina and of the American Medical Associatiou.both of which will be found in its pages. To our unprofessional eye the issue appears to be an unusually interesting one. Cer tiin it is, that in a business point of view it seems very successful, as it scores twenty-five pages of advertisements. The south Atlantic. The May number of the S uth Atlan'ic, bein No. 1, of Vol. IV., is at hand. There are several very attractive articles in this issue. Paul H. fliynes contributes a very interesting hketch of Commodore Tatnall; W. C Johnstone gives us a very readable paper, relative to travels in the Holy Land; Madame La Rose, a pretty little story, is by Emily R. Jones and D. R Goodloe writes of the Finance, of the Revolution. The poetry of the number is by Mrs. Margaret J. Preston in Epitha lamium; and Atlantis Discovered by Paul H. Hayne. The two serials, Carmalita and Jehn Davidson's Wife, are continued. The editorial articles are very readable. Daily Review. City Court. Alderman Planner, Mayor pro temp., presiding: Oscar Cameron and George Peamon, two colored youths arrested by oflicti Walker in Brooklyn yesterday for disor deriy conduct, were sent below for twen ty four hours thia. morning by the Mao pro tempore Supreme Court Decisions. State vs. Charles W. Craig, from New Hanover. Judgment reversed. Decision by Justice Ashe. Supreme Court. The following cases, from this district, were called in the Supreme Court at Ral eigh, on Monday : W. A. Rogers, executor, vs. Robert Me Keuzie, et al, from Robeson ; report tiled and referred. McKinuon fc Lilly vs. McKay McKin non, from Richmond; arg led by McNei 1 & McNeill for plaintiff, and J. D. Shaw aud Hinsdale fc Devereux for the defendant. Budding Roses. This is a simple process by which amateur cultivators often increase their stock. A sharp penknife can do duty for a budding-knife, and the handle of a toothbrush, if ground down smooth, wil aid in lilting the bark. From the last of June to the last of Augaut is the best time for this process, as the bark can be more easily raised from the wood. Take a smooth stalk and make a horizontal cut across the bark through to the wood, but not into it. From the center of this cross cut make another cut straight down the stem and an inch or more in length. These two cuts should resem ble a T. Slice ofl the bud you desire to propagate with one cut of the pen knife, cutting it close to the main stalk. Now, with the edge of the spud turn back the birk on each side of the straight cut, and insert the bud on the wood of the branch to be budled, fit ting it tightly to the crossed cut; with a bit of sofc yarn bind down the bark, leaving a pegnt of the bud exposed A handful of dampened moss must then be bound round the stem, taking care to loave the tiny point of the bud exposed to the air. In fix weeks the wrappings can be removed, but all other shoots must be kept from growing on the budded branch By this means a rose bush can be mad-j to bear half a dozen different colored roses. Quick Time of the Ripple. The yacht Ripple belonging to Mr. Norwood Giies, of this city, left here night before last in command of Mr John Farrow with a crew of two colored men, on the way to Wrightsville Sound. The purpose in leaving at night was to be at the lulet ready to cross in the early morning, which Capt. Farrow with his little craft accomplished at 9 o'clock, ani by 11 o'clock a. m. of the same day was etlMasonboro Inlet, but he was not able to enter the Sound until 12 o'clock on ac count of the tide. The Ripple did not go to sea over Main Bar, but through what is called by some Buzzird Bay lulet, a small opening ocross Smith's Island, about half way be tween New Inlet and Main Bar. This inlet, or "wash" has only about four feet of water on it at high tide and must therefore be dry at dead low water. It formerly had several feet more water than is on it now and in a few years, owing te the shifting of the sand, will probably have disappeared entirely. It is not, properly speaking an i nlet, but .nerely a low place in the island where the water makes across at high ti Ie. A pleasant and refreshing rain fell here for about an hour early this morning. - The Opep Air Concert. We are req tested to state thjt the Open Air Concert which was to havo teen giveu iu the City Hall Park this even in by the Cornet Concert Club has been postponed until Friday niht next A small sum, ten cents, will recharged f admission at the ates election of officers. Atkinson, Bishop of this diocese, who left here sonie ten days or two weeks ao accompanie 1 by Mrs. Atkiuson e rout for a trip to the old world, has positivel decided siuce his arrival at the north to forego the trip to Europe altogether, and has taken a trip to Saratoga instead where the venerable Bishop aud his good lady are at preseut sojourning. This conclusion was reached, we are told, on account of Mrs. Atkinson's ill health. A Young Sufferer. We regret to learn that little Johnnie Stienken, who was so seriously buroea a few days siuce by falling iuto a bin of hot rosin, an account of which we published at the time, is not noticeably improving, and that he is a severe sufferer. His legs and feet are entirely denuded of skin, and he suffers continually from an internal heat, which, together with the terrible condition of his limbs, taxes a fortitude which but few men would possess under like circum stances. He is in unceasing agony, and although he struggles bravely to suppress the evidence of his torture, his moans may be heard nearly every hour in the day and night. We sincerely sympathize with the little fellow, und earnestly hope that a speedy relief may be afforded him. Heavy Shower on the Cape Fear. We learn from steamboatmen from Fayetteville t at there was a very severe show r. accomnanied bv thunder aid .. . , , - lightning, at LittlekSugar Loaf, Bladen ccunty, on the Cae Fear yesterday af ternoon, between the hours of 4 and 5 o'clock. At the turpentine distill ry of Sheriff Sutton, three men, one white aud two colored, were knocked down and stun ned by the electric tiuid. The Sheriff also had two horea harnessed to a buggy, one of which was knocked down, while the other remained unscathed. The light ning also struck a large pine near the distillery, and in its descent to the ground killed four hogs that were under the tree. The white man who was knocked down, we learn, had the same experience, du ring a thunder shower, near the same place j a year or two ago. If he keeps oq he may become inured to electric shocks in the course of time. The shower cf yesterday is said to have been one of the most severe which has been experienced la that section for anumber of years. Colored Masonic Parade. Yesterday afternoon (3t. John's Day) Giblem Lodge of A. Y. Masons, colored, of this city.together with Shekinah Ledge of the same order from Charleston, S. O., as visitors, paraded the streets for about an hour. Both lodges presented a fine appearance, and their conduct was in every respect commendab'e. After the parade they assembled at the City Hall, where an appropriate address was delivered by R. W. D.G. M ., James W. Telfair, of this State, at the conclusion of which the following fti -ers were intuited for Giblem Lodge for the current: W. M. George L. Mabson, S. W. E:ijh Line. J. W. Robert Now. Secretary Thomas Simmons. Treasurea James A. Lowery. S. D. James P. Green. J. D. James Love Stewards John D. Nixon, John Sher idan. Chaplain Wm. Phiuney. Joseph C. Hill read an original poem, which was well received. The music was under the charge of W. K. Price, assijted by male and female vo calists. The Charleston vistors remain in the city as guests oi their colxed Masooie brethren, to-day, and will leave for their homes in the Palmetto State to-morrow (Thursday) morning. 25, 1879.
