Military Encampment
We were somewhat surprised to see 11
stated in the Raleigh News of the 2oth
inst , that the Second Brigade, N. C. S
G., would hold its annual encampment at
Beaufort. We have been informed by
Gen.M. P. Taylor, commanding Second
Brigade, that the encampment would be
held at Smithville, probably about the
middle of August, and not at Beaufort,
as stated in the News.

The Orguinette.
The advertisement of this new and
novel "musical machine,' which appeared
n lesterday'g Review, drew a large num
ber to Mr. Yates' atnie last mght and this
f renoon, all curious to see it and hear it
p'ay. The orguiue te is certainly n f
the curiosities of the age and must b-seen-and
heard to be appreciated. You
simply turn a crank and you get th-
tnusic. Sheets of ITi 11 sii c u.Mrri rurfi .r -jt-
notes, are arrar ged expressly for this in
strarneot and it will play any of the
music whica ia placed, ready for it. A
little child can manage it. Mr. Yatti
wih be glad to have everybody call and
see it. He is the agent for the sale of the
lnstrument in this city.
Hosing fcxercises.
The closing exercises of Misses Burr &
James' Female School, which have been
in progress during the the past two days,
will be concluded this evenius. Th
parents and many of the friends of the
young lady pupils were present at the
school house yesterday afternoon when
the final recitations aud reading of com
positions were had and there were exercises
in calisthenics. Those who were present
were wtll pleased with the proficiency
exhibited, the display in the Kindergarten
department having been especially pleas
ing and attractive.
The exercises will close this evening
when there will be au exhibition of vocal
and instrumental music, object teaching
and calistheuie exercises and when the
prizes to the pupils will be awarded in
public.
Runaway and Smash -Up.
Ab ut 10 o'clock this morning, a horse
attached to a dray, standing on the wharl
at the foot of Chestnut street, became
possessed with the idea thr.t a little active
exercise would be beneficial, and as be
was not tied, and as no driver was present,
he laid his ears back and gave a switch
of his tail aud started off at a run, aiming
apparently for the entrance to J. W.
Alderman's store. After reaching ti t
sidewalk, having run against another
dray and a telegraph pole on his passage,
he changed his ccurse and ran alcn
the sidewalk, demolishing four chairs
that were on the curbstone for
the convenience of loungers. and
finally stopped, very appr priately,
at W. P. O dham's meal and leed store
We have heard of mm who could not
pass a barroom without stopping, but this
is the first instance that has come to our
knowl dge oi a runaway horse stopping
voluntarily at a feed store.
There is a city ordinance forbidding
the leaving of horses untied, and a pen
alty often dollars for its violation, and,
aa the horse in question has run away on
several previous occasions, endangering
life, limb and property, we think it a
good time to put the ordinance in force
Thermometrical.

The Flurry In Stocks"
Always means an opportunity for some
shrewd and lively operator to make a
handsome profit. Messrs Lawrence & Co. ,
Bankers, N. Y., have established the
combination system for operating in
stocks, 6o that capital in any amount from
$5 to 50 000 can be used profitably at
any time that may suit the customer. By
pooling the orders of thousands of patrons
into one immense sum, and operating
them as a mighty whole, under the most
experienced skill, vast profits are made,
which oould be gained iu no other way.
These are divided pro rata among share
holders mor thly. An investment of
$10 returns $50, or 5 per cent ou the
stock, $100 pays $950, and so on, ac
cording to the market. A St. Louis
patron made wver three hundred per cent,
on an investment in October by the com
bination method. Messrs. Lawrence &
Co.'s new circular (mai'ed free) "has
two unerring rules for success" and full
information, so that any one can operate
with profit. Stocks and bonds wanted.
