A large spoonfuls stirred into a hogshead of water will so purify it that in a few hours the dirt will sink to the bottom, and it will be fresh and clear as spring water. The Revival. The revival at Front Street M. E. Church continues to grow and inereaae in spiritual interest. Already there have been over one hundred conversions with a pros pect of many more. Rev. Dr Burkhead, the Presidiug Elder of the distriet, is in attendance and preached there last even ing. The Pastor of the Church, Rev. E. A. Yates, is still assisted by Rev. Mr. McPherabn and his wife. Military Encampment We were somewhat surprised to see 11 stated in the Raleigh News of the 2oth inst , that the Second Brigade, N. C. S G., would hold its annual encampment at Beaufort. We have been informed by Gen.M. P. Taylor, commanding Second Brigade, that the encampment would be held at Smithville, probably about the middle of August, and not at Beaufort, as stated in the News. Heard From. A gentleman in this city has learned through correspondence with an acquaint tance in Dallas, Texas, that Maj, J. W. Schdnck, formerly a prominent Republi can politician in this city and for several terms JJheriff pjf the County and who "happened" to spend more than the law allowed him to do or than was agreeab'e to his sureties, is now a resident of Dallas, and has at last struck "ile, ' though what sort of "ile'' we are not informed. The Lost Captain. Capt. Philip B. Gardener, of Philadel phia, arrived in our city last night and is to take charge of the schooner Emma Heather , bound from Cardenas for Phil -adelphia. Capt, Hudson, who was lost at sea, leaves a wife and four small chil dren. He owned a portion of the Emma Heather and had just paid for his inter est. The closing exercises of Misses Burr & James' Female School, which have been in progress during the the past two days, will be concluded this evenius. Th parents and many of the friends of the young lady pupils were present at the school house yesterday afternoon when the final recitations aud reading of com positions were had and there were exercises in calisthenics. Those who were present were wtll pleased with the proficiency exhibited, the display in the Kindergarten department having been especially pleas ing and attractive. The exercises will close this evening when there will be au exhibition of vocal and instrumental music, object teaching and calistheuie exercises and when the prizes to the pupils will be awarded in public. Ab ut 10 o'clock this morning, a horse attached to a dray, standing on the wharl at the foot of Chestnut street, became possessed with the idea thr.t a little active exercise would be beneficial, and as be was not tied, and as no driver was present, he laid his ears back and gave a switch of his tail aud started off at a run, aiming apparently for the entrance to J. W. Alderman's store. After reaching ti t sidewalk, having run against another dray and a telegraph pole on his passage, he changed his ccurse and ran alcn the sidewalk, demolishing four chairs that were on the curbstone for the convenience of loungers. and finally stopped, very appr priately, at W.
