Charlotte Observer : Two young
men of this city who have given some
time already to pedestrian exercises
are likely to have an exhibition con est
on the race course at the fair grounds
within two weeks. Parties have offer
ed to back tham for $50 a aide and
the young men are quite eager for the
undertaking. They propose to walk
for twenty four hours on a dead
stretch from 12 o'clcok of July 3d to
12 o'clock of the 4th without rest or
sleep.
Goldsboro Messenger: There is a
disease prevailing iu some parts of the
csuntry to a certain extent among
horses. It commenoes with a swell
ing on the chest, extending like a
knotted ohain along the course of the
jugular to the throat-latch, where the
glands are enlarged and hard. It has
yielded to the following treatment :
When first discovered, bleed freely;
give 15-grain doses of iodine of pota h
three times a day, and rub the swell
ing with crude petroleum and spirits
of turpentine.

government has sent out forces to oppose
him. but they were unable to cross the
river, Aizptirn s men having taken pos
session of all the boats. On the 11th
Aizpurn and his party disappeared
trom Gatun, and it was generally thought
that they had gone to the interior to
keep the contest alive intil atter the
elections in September. On the 12th,
however, much to the surprise of the Gov
ernment troops, he opened fare upon them
at Lion Hill station on the line of tha
railway, aud kept up a aort of desultory

Greenback Convention.
Toledo, ,Ohio, June 24 The National
Gnenoack Convention assembled in this
city to-day, and organized by appointing

dent. Tne programme laid down by the
managers last eveuiug was tally carried
out to day. The platform adopted
rearms the pnuciples of the Toledo
convention of February 22, 1878, with an
additional plank favoring income tax, and
i!so uuiimited coinage of eilver; denoun
ces the boarding of coin in the Treasury
and demands that all unemployed
coin be placed in the hands 1 ot
the people, . and that National
bank notes be withdrawn, and full leag!
tender greenbacks be substituted in their
itead. It approves the mechanic's hen
iaw; favors instead of bigh 'utereet aur!
cheap labor, a iow interest aud well-paid
labor. It demands that bonds be paid in
exact accordance with conditions of tbeir
issue. A resolution was adopted that the
convention deems it inexpedient to pet
new candidates in tbe field. Tbe com
mittee previously agreed upon was than
appointed te select a ticket. Tbe commit
tee are all Ewing and Rice men, and the
action it the endersement of the Demo
cratic ticket.
