They were absent but a comparatively short time, hating spent less than a momh in their old homes They are both looking well and we cord ially welcome them back again amoag us. y. Robeson County C.-nps. A friend and; subscriber in Robeson wri'es to tell us that jso far as he can learn the crops in that county promise well. Corn, he thinks, consequencs of the drouth, will be cut off about one- lit- fourth, although in some plat as a good average cop will be aiade, while cotton is doing very well indeed and with Indica tions, at present, of a good average. Too much ra?n and to little sunshine is what the cotton plant?rs fear now. The ReTlYal. . Wo learn that the revival in progress at the Second Baptist Church continues with unflagging interest, and that access ions to the ranks of the church are being continually made. There are now quite a number of candidates awaiting baptism, which ordinance will be administered on Sunday, the 21th inst. Since the com oaencement of the meetings about 60 havo been cou verted and added to thai fold uf the church. The services through next week! i rill continue The Storm signal. 1 We notice that the storm flig is flying . :om the masthead at the signal office this afternoon; it is the off-shore signal red with a black centre, and it is the first time in several months that we have noticed it fl)ing here at all. GreenbacHers Gathenusr. Ti e Greentackers had a grand gather in' of the masses last nh'ht ou Church street, between Four.h and Fifth, a gather lug which w? pr;icipally rema!kabie1foi the conspicuous absence ot white people, and the no less coLspicuous presence of the tried and true Republicans. The blacks are said io have been largely in the as cendant. Speeches were made by Messrs. Waller, Kelle, and Barniiz. and by Dun can flolsntss Exactly what was the object of the m an i fee tat ion we have not as yet ascertained. We understand that the per formance is to be repeated at an early date. A selenitic American. Some of our readers may find i amuse ment and entertainment in the following experiment, descrit vl by the Scientific American: Lighting gas with the finger is a feat anybody may persorm. Let a person, in his slippers, walk briskly over a woolen carpet, shuffling his feet thereon, or stand upon a chair with its legs upon fear tumblers f insulate it, and be ; rub bed there up and down a few' times with a muff, by a second individual, and he will light his gas by simply placing his finger to the tube It is only j necessary to take the precaution not to touch any thing, or be touched by anybody, during the tr'.al ot the experiment. The shock of elecicity acquired by the process we have described, 't discharged by cont t v th another objct. Oae person must tr-n ou the g- wl 'le the other iiies it. Excursion to Smithville. Says the Fayettev"le Gazette: j Capt. A. H. Worth offers to give the people of Fayette ville and those liv'ig on the Cape F" an excursion to Smithri"e at low ra . The price from Fayetteville, for round trip, will be $2 meals not fur nished. The boat will be prepared, if the excursion is gotten up, to furnish meals to a", who prefer to take fare en the boat. Excursion tickets will be issued and will be good for e:thcr three or ten days but the Worth will go to Smith ville for the excursionists only oncej la other words, those whe take advantage of the excursion rates must decide whether they will remain at Smithville for (one trip of the beat or two. It is proposed, if possible, jto make the excursioa to Smithville on the last of this month or the first of next. It is proba ble that the second regiment will go in to camp at Smitht'lle, on or about the 25th of August. , ! The military will be provided with tent i, and we learn that ample accommo dations cau be found in Smithville for the excursions . i' 1 A better opportunity for a pleasant trip is rarely offered, fishing, sailing, surf bathing, &c, are ail offered, and we have little doubt that pot less than two or three hundred from this end of the line will take advantage of the low rates of fered. I Cured of Drinking. i i 'A yeung f.iend of mine was cured of ao insatiable thirst for liquor, which had so prostrated him that he was unable to do any business. He was entirely cured by the use of Hop Bitters. It allayed all that burning thirst; took away the appe tite for liquor;' made his nerves steady, and he has remained a sober and steady man for more than two years, and hss no desire to return to his cups; I know of a number of ethers that have been cured of drinking by it From a loading R R Official Chicago, 111. The managers have a fine assortment of goods in store, from which it would seem that any one might make a good and profitable selec. Hon for the money. Another Improvement, That portion ol the city k now n as Brooklyn comprising.in the main, all that s North ot the line of , the ! Wilmington & Weldon R. Success to it. ) The Excursion i to New York. ji 1 The excursion of the Whiting R fles to New York, which is advertised in this issue, promises to afford rich opportuni - ties for the excursionists to see the sights in nd around that famous city. Upon arrival in New York they will be notified of the place or places j whish they may haye an opportunity to visit on the follow- ing day, and this plan will b $ repeated each day during their stay, so that all f the principal places and objects of interest may be visited. In the same way places of amusement in the evening will be designated, and we understand that ar rangements have been perfected by which sight-seeing and pleasure-seeking will be reduced to a science where all may enjoy the maximum of pleasure for a minimum outlay under the management which has the excursion in charge, j ' Wholesale and Retail. The improvements which have recently been inaugurated in Messrs. Sol. Bear & BrosJ, wholesale and retail stores on the South side of Market street are about completed. The staircase has been re moved from the front and a much greater width is thus given to that which has been heretofore known as the retail store They occupy three floors of two build ings; Nos. 18 and 20, aud they have adopted an entirely new arrangement for the display aud sale of their goods. The first floor, No. 15, will be devoted entire ly to the sale ef dry goods and carpets, while No. 20, of the same floor, will be used as a clothing and gents furnhing goods establishment, all first class. On the second floor, No. i 18 will be rilled with clothing, to be sold strictly at whole sale, while in No. 20 will be stored, also for the wholesale trade, notions, dry goods and staple goods. The third floor, which also appertains to the wholesale department, will be filled with cases of boots and shoes in No. IS, j nd hats, caps, trunks, valises, ice, in No. 20. Mr. Sol Bear, the senior mermber of the, firm, will leave j hero next week for tho Northern markets where he will lay in the different varieties of stock required for the Fall and Winter trade. Return or Captain Brock- i Capt. Harry O. Brock, Chief of Police of this; city, returned here lat night with his family after an absence of two week spent in ennsylvaniaj the Key Stone State, which the Chief asserts is the place where ho first the saw light of the world. Capt. Brock reports things j quite lively in that section as compared with our own impoverished land; money seems plenti ful, and it is estimated that there are at least thirty thousand more pleasure seek ers at the dinar en t resorts, or roaming from the sea side to the mountains in search of fun, frolic and pleasure, j than there was last season . In regard to pol itics Capt. B. reports that from the best information be coma ODiam ne was iercea to the conclusion that Uncle Sammy Tilden with his "barT would carry the day and be the Democratic nominee in the next presidential campaign. Everything looks beautiful and thri ving in. that fertile country and the vab leys are laughing with their overloaded crops of grain: says , our informant. Business too is reviving and it seems to be the general impression among all classes of people that after the long night of financial darkness the country has suffered since the, panic of 1873, the dawn of a new era of prosperity is about to brefk upon us. Captain Brock is looking very well and leems to have enjoyed his trip hugely and to have ha 1 a good time generally. Captain Brock enters upon duty to-day and relieves Captain John Cowan , who in addition to his other many duties has been acting Chief of Police also for the past fortnight.' I 16, 1879.
