The County Commissioners, Assessors

in Smithville on Monday, in accordance
with the law, to revise the assessments on

the Wilmington, Columbia & Augua

The C C. Railway and the County
Commissioners.
In publishing the proceedings of the
County Commissioners in. yesterday's
Review we stated that "Major D. J.
Deyane made a very able argument before
the Board in regard to taxing the rolling
stock and other property of the O. C.
Railway which hag never paid taxes under
any previous administration." This, we
understood to be correct at the time but
we haue since learned that the only point
of issve between the C. O. Railway and
the Commissioners id whether the rolling
stock of the Railway Company shall j be
considered as personal poroperty and as
such be listed for taxes.

Dr. Walter C. Murphy, on his profes

large be)t of country in that section, known
as the " White Oak," rich in fertility and
inexhaustible in quantity, is celebrated
not only tbr its large crops of corn but

Last evening, just as twilight was deep
ening into the darker shades of night, a
middle-aged widow lady, residing in the
northern portion of the city, j was k seated
on the front piazza of her house, having
for a companion an adopted daughter, &
young miss of 15 or 1C summers. While
engaged in pleasant conversa ion with
each other the front gate was opened, and
a woman clothed in the habiliments of
woe entered and approached the house,
leaning upon a cane, with the slow and
uncertain steps of the decrepitude of ad
vanced age, and besought charity in the
tremulous tones of famis'ring want. A(
her appearance the young lady became
excessively mirthful, while her more elder
ly companion looked on with profound
mortification at such a display of levity
under such circumstances. She attempt
ed to check such ill-timed mirth, but it
only, made matters worse. She then turn
ed to know the wants of the , venerable
modicant, when the latter with protean
dexterity threw aside her cane, bonnet and
veil, and one of Wilmington's most
charming, vivacious and merry-hearted
daughters stood revealed before her. Of
course explanations were next in order,
when it was ascertained i that the two
young ladies bad a full understanding be
forehand, but the scheme came near fall
ing, through on account ci the mirthful-
ness it provoked in the young miss who
i i
was seated on the piazza.

Rather Scarce
We learn that there is quite a scarcity
of hay, corn and mealj in this market at
present, owing to the non-arrival of

which have cleared for this port sometime
since. The Steamship Benefactor brought
some corn, we are told, but not much,

fall and winter stocks of merchandise.

which occurs on the rising tide, and it
gives us a depth of water on the bar at
