His Honor Mayor Fishblate presiding. ' Two cases of drunkenness were brought before the Mayor) this morning, but tbe Mayor having just returned with pleasing recollectious of a delightful three weeks vacatiob around among the differ ent summer resorts at the North, could i not find it in his heart to be too "bard on a poor case" asRob'the Grinder would say, so he released one upon promises of future good behavior while the other case was continued at the solicitation jof defen dant until Monday morning. Attempt at Burglary. This morning a thief effected an enU ranee into the resideco of Capt. R. S. Radcliffe on Chestnut, between Fourth and Fifth streets. He rummaged through ths desk drawer in the sitting room aod in attempting to go into tbe parlor made a noise which attracted the attention of Mrs. Rj who awoke her husband telling him some one was in the house. Capt. K got up and in his search found that tbe thief hat effected an entrance through a back window. The man got away without being seen but as he seemed to be only after money he did not trouble the household silver, which was in reach of him. He has a foot exactly eleven inches long and is thought to be a white man and the same one who robbed Capt. R. about four years ago Capt. Radcliffe was si ting at his desk last evening doing some writing, and ho doubt the thief was peering through the window at him, and it being Friday nigh came to the conclusion that Capt. R. was making up his pay-roll for to-night ' Any time that the individual in question would like to take an iuventory of station ery in Capt. Radcliffe 's desk, if he will call during the day, he can do so, and will be assisted in his work as much as possi ble ; but he need never look for maney, as Capt. Radcliffe purchased an iron safe for the safe keeping of his money immediately after he was victimized, in 1875. i The best Windows, Doors and Blinds and Lowest Prices can be got at Jacobi's Hardware Depot. Russell, the Republican member of Congress from this district, who was in Asheville last week, was while there in the office of the Asheville Journal (Republican of course,) and while there was interviewed .JHe was can did enough to say that he did not believe that the Republicaus could command a majority in this State and that it was use less to organize and put out a State ticket. He seemed to think that Black Republicanism was a dead and done-for thing in North Carolina, sure enough. As regards the Presidential election Judge Russell, as a matter of course, con, sidering the machinery in the hanis of his party, and the villiany which carried Hayes to where Tilden was elected, thinks that the Republicans have no doubt of success next year. He has, to quote from the Journal "but few pre-. ferences, and no definite opinion as to who would be the nominees in the race; thought just now that the chances of sev eral prominent aspirauts were about equal, but if their merits were pooled, would not be surprised if Blaine did no lead the ticket in point of popularity with his party." Useful and Practical Hints. A sure cure for warts; Make a paste of willow ashes and strong vinegar. j To clean tinware: Dampen a cloth and . - . !....!' aip in commop soda, and rub the ware briskly. To make the hands soft: Mix honey, olive oil and! almond meal; use when washing, then wear gloves. j ! To take the brown discolorutions off of cups in which custards are baked: Rub with damp flannel dipped in the best whiting. ; Buttermilk is of slight value for part feed of its ing as it contains only 1 200th own weight of tatty particles. A teaspoonful of coal oil to a gallon of water will exterminate all I the insects that infest garden plants and beautiful flowers. ! Coal tar applied hot to a roof will cure it of leaking. Take an old broom or tie rags on an old broomstick, and use this for spreading the tar over the desired sur face. J French feeders, it is said, find that feeding the fowls with boiled or steamed 1 carrots, chopped iuto small pieces, rapidly fattens them and imparts an agreeable flavor to the fl sh, greatly relished by epicures, and that fowls thui fed sell more rapidly than others. j A writer in The Country Gentleman " -I ! recommends the use of carbolic soap upon horses during hct weather as a protect tion against flies. It is stated that it the soap be rubbed in a dry condition over the horse the flies will be kept off and a sleek ness imparted to the appearance of the an im&l.
