The MeteorolO; of August was ical report for the month received this morning from the office of the Signal Observer In this city. The information it conveys in regard to rain is its principal item of in terest. It would seem that .t there were eijjht n days last month when rain fell, and that the total rainfall during the month was 11.37 incnesi The prevailing I 1 - wind was from the soulihwest ; the total movement was 50. 13 miles, aud the high est velocity attaiaed was oa the 18th,when it was at one time blowiug at the rate of 68 miles an hour. jT.e highest tem perature was on thtj 7;u, and 8rh and scored 98, and the ldweot was on the 29th at 53. i Corn al Newbein. -"'II.- i Tha Newbern Democrat complains that the corn trade of tnat icity iwould be very much larger but for the "exhorbitant freight charges of the railroads." How ever true it may be as regards other points the complaint is hardly applicable to Wil mington. The freigut on grain by railroad from Newbern to this city is jonly six cents per bushel, which, considering the distance, the transfer at Goldsboro, and the fact that there are two corporations to be paid, cannot be called an "exhorbitant -ate." The consumption of corn in this yiciuity is very great, and the supply is largely drawn from Hyde and our (other (Eastern counties. Newbern has sent and proba bly still sends, considerable, and her deal ers will always find la ready j Bale for their grain in this market. The Mayor had quite a levee asaia this morning. 1 Henry McNeill, colored, being the firs case on docket, stepped to the front, and was arraigued for disorderly , conduct on Sunday morning, at the 'Long House.' The defendant pleaded guilty; and craved the mercy of the Court,; ii? consequence of which His Honor said only $5 fiue or ten days in the city prisbu. Otherwise the Court stated the fine would have been $10 or twenty days in the CP. ! i ' One case of drunkeness was dispose d of by a sentence of $10 fineor twenty days below. The case of a colored man, arrested for disorderly conduct, in which there were numerous witnesses of tha colored per suasion, was continued until to-morrow, the defendant pleading previous convic tion before a Magistrate. , Mitchell Spicer, a colored lad, for inso lence to a policeman, was jordere 1 locked up until to-morrow corning. Solon Shi ogle, having cooled off suffi ciently to an intelligent understanding of his case, wes required to pay a fioe of $5. This exhausted the docket and the Court adjourned.. Edwin Booth's Debat iu Wi lining . ten. We mentioned the fact, in our issue of yesterday, that it was in this city and in our old theatre that Joseph Jefferson first won fame in his profession We to--day chronicle an additional item in regard to another very distinguished actor, if not the most distinguished American actor now on the stage, It is net generally known that the eminent tragedian, Edwin Booth, also made h:s debut within the walls of "Old Drury," as it was then call ed, in the then town of Wilmington. His father, the then celebrated Junius Brutus Booth, though an erratic genius, had few equals in his palmy days, 'and when he was true to himself. He was filling an engagement here many years ago, I with Mr. Preston, the lessee of the theatre, and a desire having been expressed by Itis ad mirers to see him in his great personation of the powerfully drawn character of Pescara in the play of the Apostate, it wa put upon the fetage, and his son, Edwin, appeared as Hemeya. He wag a mere lad at the time, knew nothiDg of stage business and doubtless had never read Shakespeare's advice to the playtrs; cer tainly he had never studied it, for he ranted terribly. It was the effort of a boy and the audience not only overlooked his short-comings, but gave him generous ap? pilose throughout the performance. Thoe who were present cn that occasion little dreamed of the brilliant future of the youthful debutant. It is certainly a little remarkable . that the two most prom inent actors in the country, and the most opposite in their profession, should each p'ume their flight to the zenith from this good old town of ours, Many of our play-goers wettj remember jPreston. Poor fellow ! his life was a iaiL ure and his end a tragedy. Like the re nowned Mrs. Gummage, in Dickens Story of David Copperfield, everything "went contrary" with him, until at last, broken in mind and body, he one day wandered u the riveri bank, and the widening cir cles told those who sought him the sad fate of the poor actor. Carried. Adjourned, i ' j i : t : Burglary and a Capture. ! That portion of the city, a little to the northward of the center, is establishing a reputation as the victimized locality. Within the past day or two it has furnish ed the papers with three burglaries, the boldest and most successful one being tho robbery Sunday morning of the residence of Mr. W. J. Mott, on the corner of Fifth and Red Cross streets, as follows: At three o'clock Sunday morning Mr. Mott was up, every thing being in order about his room. jAt .five o'clock, but two hours rater, he arose for the day acd found that his room had been ransacked and that sixty-one dollars had been stolen. Further investigation showed that the thieves had entered through a back window, had rummage through two other rooms and had finally gone up stairs and turned down the bedding in an unoccupied room and had searched it for money and valua bles. Mr. Mott's gold watch was taken from the watch pocket of his pants and detached from the chain, and after wards shoved down1', in one of the hip pockets- of the pan is It is thought that the thief first intended taking the watch but put it back for fear of its being the means of betraying hima From the position ot the pants, Mr. M. believes that the thief was sitting ia - a rocking chiir while looking through them. One Hardy Wright, colored, who was a short time ago in the employ of Mr Mott, was suspected as being the thief and a warrant was issued and the pre mises of Wright searched for some of the missing articles. It was ascertained that Wright was. not the theif on this occasion, as he was, and is now, serving out a term in the Work House for tho costs in a case but that during his stay with Mr. Mott he had stolen several articles oi furniture and acme tools which were identified byj Mr. M. as his property.' j As soon aa Wright serves out bis term for costs he will be arrested ou the ch irge of larceny and held for trial at the next term of the Criminal Court. ; , I Grape Wine tor communion.
