Yearly Review;
The Charleston lew&- fc Courier pub
lished on Monday a very interesting
resume of the business ot that port during
the past twelve 'months. It is a very
extensive report and embraces every de
partment of business enterprise. It seems
to have been very carefully compiled and
the exhibit it makes is a flattering one.
We also find a lengthy report in the
Charlotte Observer as to the operations in
that prosperous little city during the past
twelve months which we may refer to more
at length hereafter. ' j
Low Water in the Cape Fear.
The steamer D. Murchisoni, which left
Fayetteville at 8 o'clock yesterday morn.
ing, did not reach here until 10 a. m. to
day, being detained by low water on the
shoals. She was due atj 2 o'clock this
morning and was eight- hours behind
time. Until there is a raise ia the river
the steamers will bo compelled to rely
upon the use of flats to lighter them over
the shoals. There have been rains re
ported on the Cape Fear above Fayette
ville, but as yet they have made no per
ceptibie increase in the depth of water.

whgther a postmaster is required under
the law to testify in a judicial proceeding
who rents a box in his office, who took
the letters from it, etc,, tending to show
what became of certain correspondence,
the subject was referred to Assistant Attorney-General

postmaster-general that the postmaster
should not be required to answer the in

. To Ex-Confederates. '
A gallant soldier of the late Confeder
ate army has just fallen a victim to the
terrible 6conrge of yellow fever in the city
of New Orleans. He has been smitten by
the fell destroyer and now Bleeps in
quiet tomb near the Crescent City. The
i
wife of his bosom was a victim to the same
disease and preceded her husband only a
few days on the long journey to the eter
nal shore. But behind them both is ;
t i
family of ten helpless little children, now
bereft ot father and mother, and left to the
cold charities of the world tor support and
sustenance. The brave soldier to whom
we refer, as the reader, no doubt, already
surmises isnone other than the gallant
General Hood, who, we understand, died
penniless, and without anything to be
queath to his children, . except his un
tarnished honor as a soldier, and his in
tegrity of character as a man, both price
less boons it is true, and a legacy which
the orphan children will be prond to in
herit from their lamented father. But
1
while this crippled and maimed soldier
has left nothing but a good name and fair
fame to his little ones, cannot the thous
ands of surviving Conlederate soldiers in
North Carolina contribute something as
a testimonial of appreciation - of this de
parted hero, to the support of the orphans?
Let a subscription fund be started in WiL
mington, and let every Confederate sol
dier give not less than twenty-five or
fifty, cents, and as much more as he
pleases, and we trust, if a like
example is followed in the other
Southern States, there will soon be a
sufficient fund raised to place : the little
ones above and beyond want.
General Hood gave his services to the
cause of the South during the late war as
a patriot; he shed his blood lreeiy ana
willingly in her defence on several occa
sions; he perilled his life and lost his
limb and even then after that he took hie
fife in his hand and again sought the
dangers of the battle field for tbe cause he
loved so well. Ai short time ao a dis
tinguished citizen in this city voluntarily
came forward and delivered a lecture in
behalf of the widow and orphans of a
gallant federal soldier, Lieut. Benner
who lost his 1 fe while daring the danger?
ot the epidemic, on the I Mississippi, last
season, in carrying relief to the sick and
suffering inhabitants of that section, who
were victims to the terrible scwrge. This
was praiseworthy, nq tioubt, but shall it be
said that we ars. kes true to one of our own
ffallant dead ? Who will be the first to
move in this matter ?
