The fodder has been stripped and there is no damage now from a heavy freshet The crops there are said to ' be tbe bebt for years and some of jtbe farm ers estimate the yield as high as 100.000 bushels. In a few weeks I !the corn will have fully matured and been gathered and stored and then there will be lots of good old-fashioned corn shuckings on hand, with a plentiful besprinkling of the kiss- able red ears in the pile. Walker, alias Back Walker, for tbe alleged murder of Frank Ball, colored, which occurred some two months ago, near Rocky Point. To-day is the anniversary of the batt!e of Sharpburg, or Aptietam, as the Yankees called it, fought in Maryland, seventeen years ago, between General Lee on tbe Confederate side and General McClellan on the Federal side. The battle was con sidered a drawn one, but Lee wa ad judged to have been! most discomfited as he withdrew from the field the next day and recrosacd the Potomac into Virginia Wilmington mourned on that occasion for the loss ot many gallant sons, premi nent among whom were the names of Oowan, Meares and Quince, besides num bers of others who were severely woun ded.
