i i .
For October gives the second installment
of Mrs. Edward's brilliant novel, 'Vivian
the Beauty and a continuation of 'The
Stsaray Side,' by Messrs. Besant and
Rice. The third of K rl Blind'd j papers
on 'Russian Conspiracies' appears, which
concludes the . series. The revel tions
which ithese papers give of life under the
Czars is certainly startling.; Mr. W. H.
Mallock s latest contribution to the ethic
and aisthetic discussions of jthe day is en
titled A Dialogue on Human Happiness,'
anh this is given in lull. It is a brilliant
and suggestive paper. From Matthew
Arnold we have an article entitled 'The
French Play in London,' which is not
only an analysis of the French j theatre a3
exhibited recently in London, ,but a
comparison of the French; and English
drama, with some fresh and acute com
ments on the nature ot dramatic poetry.
'Art and Criticism' is devoted to the
discussion of certain 1 theories now current
in London. 'Leaves from the Lau els of
Moliere' is a very readable paper on the
great French j humorous dramatist. A
description of a remarkable rocky group
in Utah, know aa The City of Rocks,
and poems by Locker, Fawcettj and oth
ers, complete the body jof the number.
The editor has for bis topics 'The
Nude in 'Art once more,' 'Women as
Horticulturists, 'and 'Art and Democracy;'
and in the 'Books of the Day' reviews
someofthe more important of recent pub
lications. . !
