A horse attached to a dray, while beiDg
backed up to the edge of Messrs Preston
Gumming & Co 'a wharf, this afternoon,
stepped a little too far and went over
board into the Cape Fear. Not likiDg
his cold bath he swan to a place jnst be
low, where he secured a foothold and
came out without injury. In the strug
gle we learnjtbat he got clear' of the dray
which sunk at the wharf.

While walking up Fourth street this
morning our attention was attracted by
the crowd of people in the vicinity of the
bridge. Hurrying our steps in hopes of
getting an item we soon overtook them

Mr. Davis Accepts.
Hon. George Davis, of this city, has
concluded to accept the appointment
tendered him by Gov. Jarvis as one of the
commissioner under the act providing
for the adjustment of that portion of the
State debt which is a lien upon her stock
in the North Carolina Railroad, reference
to which is made in bur editorial columns
to-day. Mr. Davis will probably be
Chairman of the Commission, as his
name appears first on the list. 1

We learn from one of the Southern
mail agents, that as a train of returning
colored excursionists was moving into
Charleston, S. C., Saturday evening, one
of the party, who wasyconsiderably under
the influence of whiskey, jumped from
the cars upon which he was standing, and
fell across the track, the train passing
over him and literally cutting him in
twain, one part being on each side of the
rail.

fcayetteville, 188 miles from Charlotte.
He did'nt miss it far, having got i it
wrong in only six (and possibly seven)
instances. Wilmington is 28 miles from
Smithville, 8 miles from the seacoast, 84
miles, from Goldsboro, 162 miles from
Weldon, 133 miles' from Raleigh, 112 miles
by river to Fayetteville and 188 miles to
Charlotte. We deu't know how far it is
from Newbernt

' Rat Catching.
Our friend Stroud, who has charge of
Mr. W. P Oldham's flour and meal estab
lishment on Water street, nearly under
our office, found six rats this morning in
a trap which he left prepared for tbeir re
ception on Saturday night He carried
them into the street, where there was an
exhibition for a few moments ia which
three small dogs were engaged in catching
the rats as they were released, one at a
time, from the trap. Qaick work wal
made of the little pests,.bnt not until one
of the number had fastened his teeth into
the most ambitions of the dogs and made
him yell lustily. '
