J i -: t 1 The Daily Review; JOSH. T. JAEES,lEditor & Prop. W ILMINGTON, N. C. hATURFJAY, NOVEMBER 1. 1879. KNTEBED AT THK hOSTOFFtCK AT wllmlngtox, n. c, as skcond-class Mattes. VEHV8 AND RtVJKWi?. Tbe house at Gadshili which was occu pied for years by Charles Dickens and- under whose roof he died, w as lately put up at auction. The Mayor of Banbury, England, an nounces that, in view of the hard winter imminent he shall give 100 to charities in the town, instead of eating it with the rest of the corporation at dinner. Returns show a further serious falling off in -the amount of silyer plate manu laciuie.i u. .land. In the year ending March, 1855, duty was paid on 994,360 cz; in 1879, on 740,239 oz; the decline oeing equal to a wholesale trade of about 8;50,00 a year. Th- r- p'-rt of Cieri . Wright, chief of the c iuter corps, has been forwarded to rfce Secretary of war. It is composed mainly cf the reports of engineer officer8 that have already been published. Ee renews the remarks aid suggestions made in his last report on the importance of - completing the fortifications of the sea port cities. In case of a foreign war an enemy in ten days could do injury to Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Balti more, Norfolk, Cbarles'on, New Orleans, San Francisco and other cities tenfold greater thau the cost of completing their fortifications at the present time. Motile, in a few u et ks, v. ill rake the experiment of overcoming her inefficient gripping f ici ities by tnears of a steam ship, which has been built with particular nterencrt to shallow waters. If" this 8' earner proves a success, of course otber. wilL follow, and then the neee.s.i y of goading all cotton for foreign ports by rail to New Orleans will be obviated. Mobile nitrrch-tuts are also exerting them selves to lift a:p:opriatioua to deepen th-ir barb r, so that all their wharves may become available for all 8rts of shipping. Tue rivalry betweei the two cities of New Oileans and Mobile ia likely t stimulate both to a renewed and health fa' activity . Mr, Churl- s Francis Adams, Jr , is a ma.iof largft wealth, and his heavy inter ests in the West as welJ as in the East .fit liim to know pretty well the feeling of b i-ui-ss itiiough the country. IIow much he believes in the 'boom' is to be.inf rred lrom an address to the Indianapolis board oT trade, in which he said ; 41 am fully persua led, from all I see as I go over this cou-.try, that at no time was it so pros parous a. it is to-day, and that it is now goi lg into a period of prosperity iu the next ten or lit teen ye rs greater than it ever ha 1 b fore.. I could go further and s ay that we were getting into a period o prosperity greater than any people ever saw befon: a period when all these great ca ides Uj t are now working here iu this room, t-.io co.ubination of telegraphs and railroads and other appliances, have got to work with greater energy and produce greater results than we have ever dreamed of or teen any cause to, dream of in past history.' Toe battlj of Torgau, fought by Fred" erick the Qrvp.t in 17G0, is well known to have been one of the most murderous- ly contested actions which has ever taken place, but until. lately no trustworthy enumeration has ever been given ot the killed, wounded, aud missing' on either side. Iu the last number of the Militar Wochcnblatt, the organ of tha German general staff, carefully prepared tables are published of the losses suffered by the several Prussian regiments of cavalry and battalions of infantry engaged, and from these ii appears that the fifty-nine bat talions wLich took part in the action, and which numbered altogether 26,000 ofii cers and men, lo t a total cf 15,650 offi cer and men or about CO per cent, of their aggregate effective. In the thirty nine battalions wnich fought under the personal direction and immadiate orders of the King, the proportion of losses was even greater, so that, after the action, the five battalions of grenadiers had to be formed into one battalion, the remnants of six bat'a'ions of two other regiments being also temporarily organized into one battalion. Of the 26,000 infantry sol diers who went into action, 3,350 were killed, 7,956 were wounded, and S.130 were reported as missing. As a contrast to this terribla proportion of killed, wounded, and missing, it may be men tioned that the toss at Gravelotte was on ly 1-1 1th of the whole number of troops engaged on both sides, at Worth and Mars-laThour 1-G:h, at ticheron 1 8th, at Koniggratz l15ih only, and at Mag enta and Sol (erino 1-1 1th. TOE NEW YORK TRIBUNE AND ' THE SOUTH. It is fortunate, perhaps, that the1 New York Tribune has but a limited 'circula tion in the South, and that its induence, even where it does dirn! tt limited. Its columns are continually filled with advice as to the course tba South should pursue in all her relations of life civil, social, domestic, financial and industrial ryet the advice is gotten up expressly to nlease the tastes and wishes of a northern iiarket. and which, if fol. lowed, wonjd bring ruin and disaster up on the section it is tjuppesed to benefit. The Tribute entirely' sectional, and cateri only to' the passions, prejudices and jealousies of those who esteem the South as a p ical Nazareth, from which no good i come. Every allusion which it makes regarding the South is to pander directly to the wishes of ' those who hate us aud are jealous thatjwe may become prosperous. 1 All its advice is to further sectiona! selfishness is entirely uncalled for and will, as we trust, be entirely un heeded by our people. The supreme im pudence of attempting to give direction to the aftVrrs of a section for which it manifests only hatred, ar;d for which I . i -; it never s.takg a Kindly nor encouraging word, is ouiy equalled by il J. i-.i i i i . . s I ineavionv. wun.wuicn us teachings are aouhr ,'or its paitiiiau friends, and the supremo iuliftre.ee with which t beware trea ed here at the South. I The manufaciurers of theNortn have r.cently becotnej alarmed over the prospect of an inauguration of extnsave mannfac turing efittrprisyi in this section of the country, aud the 7iLune, catching tte alarm, and wishing to pander to the de sires of tbegrehter portion I f its readers, an 1, at the su; e tim , inflict a dose of its usele.s advice upon, the South, comes out. in itsisue f the 3'rd uliirno,' with the gravest reasons why such enterprises should not be entertained for a moment PROVERBS "Tor sinking trpells, fits, dizziness, pedpitar tion and low spirits, rdj on Hop Bitten. n "Bead of, procure and use Bop Bitters, and you wiU oe strong healthy and happy." A great dal of foolish advice is be stoweii on these communities by. short sighted persons,' the burden of which ie that they shy Id start manufactories. There is at present little 'demand for in creased manufacturing facilities in the United States, aud that little the North can speedily supply. It wou'd be folly for Southern towns .to attempt a feeble J competition with, the greit Northern factories. Capijtalj. skilled; and organi zed labor, ana competent managers are alike wanting, a;nd if these could be ob tained it wouid take years to get pos session of profitable markets by crowd ing out the powerful interests already in possession of the field. Anyone of ordinary perception can see the animus (which prompts the j senti ments contained , in the above and anyone j who is at all acquainted with the success which has thus far attend ed the maujufciCLuring enterprises of the Soutli, will know that the postulate of the Tribune is . unwarranted by the facts. It is not the ft ar that we shall fUl ; but, on the contrary, the Certainty of our success, which caus.s alarm, and gives volition to such disinterAld (?) ad. ice.
