NO. 247 Large Confligration Burning of ColYille & Co's Steam Saw Hill, and Altaffer & Price's Sash & B "lad Factery.Deitmction of Spirits and Bosin' Loss $35 000 to $40 000 About fifteen minutes past twelve o'clock last night the private watchman on Messrs Colvil'e & Co's mill yard at the foot of Walnut street near the river discovered flames issuing from tbe f jrnace room of the mill and immediate y gave the alarm of fire. The policeman on that beat sounded the alarm about tbe same time, and soon the fire bells were all ringing the;. general alarm. Tbe LiltU Giant steam engine, followed by the Hook and Ladder, Cape Fear engine S ted man Bucket Company and Adrian, reached the scene in the order named, but owing to the intensity ot the cold it was 1 o'clock before a stream of water could be thrown; tbe fire had then been raging some three quarters of an hoar, and' the mill and Messrs. Altaffer & Price's Sash and Blind Factory were now beyond the hope of being rescued from destruc tieu, and it required the united efforts of the firemen to save even a portion of the lumber on the yard, together with the building and naval stores of Messrs. Alex. Sprunt 3c S-n on the adjoining wharf. The Champion Cotton Compress on the North was also adjoining ,the fire, but the fire-proof brick wall and the tin s'led was a .'great protection to the prop erty and was the cause, no doubt, of pro renting a spread of the flames in that di rection ot the time. The Nor. bark Zzphyr, lying at Messrs Sprunt & Son's wharf at the time, was scorched somewhat, and was finally ex tricated from its dangerous position by the steam tug Nyce which arr rived in time to tow tbe ressel away. The mill of Messrs Oolyille & Co had not been running for three days, owing to tbe fact that some repairs were being made, but steam was kept up in the boil er to run the machinery of Altaffer & Price's Sash and Blind Factory, which wss under the same roof, Colrille & Co furnishing them the motive power for their factory. It was from the fire in the furnace room, where the boiler is fired up, that it is thought the flames originated, al though the watchman states that he pass ed through this room about 10 or 11 o'clock and no fire was visible at that hour. Still, it is supposed that a few slumbering sparks may hare lingered there and been fanned into a flame through tbe rentilator or flues to the room and then communicated to a small pile of shavings and saw dust left in this room for kind ling purposes. The mill and factory were entirely consumed together with a quantity of lumber on the yard. The flames then spread to Messrs Spiunt and Son's yard adjoining, and destroyed seme S25 casks of spirits and about 400 or 500 barrels of rosin; also the wharf and.shed ; in addition, there were some 60 casks of spirits and about 100 barrles rosin which were rolled into the rlrer, the most of which, howercr, will he recorered. The determined efforts of omr worthy firemen, tinder their efficient Chief, Col. Roger Moore, are worthy of the highest praise for their untiring xeal and energy to preserve property and prerent a further conflagration. From all that we can gather the follow iog is a list of the losses sustained by the different property owners together with the amount of insurance on the different properties which were consumed : Messrs. Colrille k Co. lost their mill and machinery and about $5,000 worth of lumber. The mill was insured for $2,000, one thousand of which was with Mr. Norwood Giles In the Western, of Canada and $1,000 more with the Pamlico of Tarboro, J W. Gordon Sc Bro., Agents. On their lumber Messrs. Colrille Sc Co had only $4,000 insurance divided as follows: with Atkinson Manning in the Fire Associstlon of Philadelphia, $2,000, with Norwood Giles in the Royal ot Eagland $1,000 and with J W. Gordon & Bro. in the Union Fire and Marine of Texas, $1,000. Besides this, the wharf property on which the mill stood, the property of Col. John MacRae, was almost entirely destroyed. Mr. Taylor, son of one of the mill owners, estimates the cost to repair the wharf at from fire to eight thousand dollars. We were unable to acertain whether the wharf was covered by insurance or not. Messrs. Colrille & Co. 'a lots will probably reach $10,000 orer and abort their insur ance. Messrs. Altaffer & Price, who had juit Review' succeeded in putting now and expe&sive machinery into their factory,' which tbey expected to start to-lay for the frst timo hid only $1,000 ins'ir-uw-f-this with Norwood Giles. Their loss, the firm es timates, to be between five an 1 aix th u sind djllars, besides tbe lo?s of busiiicgs which tbe burning of their factory entails upon them. Messrs. Sprunt & $jn'a loss is about 8,500 on spirits and rosin in and around warehouse, but this is fully covered by insurance with the Agencies of DeRosstt & Northrop, Norwoo,l Giles, J. W. Gor don & Bro. There is at leist $3,000 lost on the warehouse and wharf burnt which was corered to the extent of $2,000 with At kinson k Manning. Thre is also some damage to Mewr Sprunt A Son's office building, but this V i ! i.i . .S comparaiiToiy aiignr, not yet ascertained The otace is covered with $5,000 insur ance with Norwood Giles and J. W. Gor don & Bro. A dredging scow, built for the U S. government . and just completed, was burned in thi dock at the mill yard; the cost of this boat and machinery will probably reach $2,000, but we were no able to ascertain whether it is the loss of Messrs, Colrille. & Co., who furnished tba lumber for constructing it, or the Govern ment. , The total amount of damage to prop, erty will probably reach $40,000. The flames, though under control, at this writing, 2:30 o'clock, are net entirely ly subdued, a large pile of slabs stored up against the Compress Company's wall being still on fire, and some little appre hension is felt on the part of the officers of the Company for the safety of their property. A vigilant watch is being kept however, and the fire engines are still on duty where they will probably remaiaall night and until the danger has en tirely ceased. Our warmest sympathies are tendered to the sufferers, whom we hope soon to see rise, Phoenix like, once more and ere long be in full blast again. Cen'l Sup'ts Office.
