hear the Hon.! George Dayis,T Historical
lec nre upon the theme, "A Study in Co
lonial History." The lecturer went back
in history some two hundred years to
make hii starting point, and from thence
by degrees, through link after link1 of
succeeding generations andeytnts, be es
tablished to the gatisfactien of 'his aud-
ieace a complete vindication of John Por
ter and Edward Moseley, from the as
persioLf cast upon their fair name and
fame by Hawks and other historians.
From the first named distinguished per
sonage in the history of the early colony
in this State, Mr. Davis traced the pedi
gree of some of the most illustrious men of
ihii old Cape Fear sectioo, prin
cipal among whom are the names
of ,Ashe, Lillington and Moore.
The name of Edward Mosely, a distin
guished. citizn of this section, who occuv
pied the positson of Surveyor-General for
this Colony for many years, was elo
quently eulogized by j the distinguished
speaker, and rescued frem the degraded
place in history where the prejudice of a
few latter-day historians had placed it and
elevated to the front rank of patriots and
ortby ci'iz-ns of the time in which Le
Hyed. j
The genealogy of other old and prone.
hunt families of this section was a so
