The alarm of fire was sounded last Tues
day night about 1 o'clock, caused by the

Greensboro Patriot: Eighty-five con
victs are now at work on the Cape Fear
and Yadkin Valley Railroad in the
South-Western part of the city. There
are about two and a half miles of grad
ingto be done North-West of and in
the city in order te make a through
connection with the lower end of the
road, the grading of which has been
recently completed. The whole force
will then be put on the Mt. Airy end
above Bruce's X Roads.
News and Observer: The receipts
of cotton here yesterday were 731 bales.
The loss by the fire at Mr. Geo. T.
Cooke's barn, Wednesday night, was
about 1,500. There were about 17,000
pounds of cotton stored in the barn.-
The general meeting of creditors of the
Bank of North Carolina, together with
the sale of the remaining effects belonging
to the estate, has been adjourned to
December 7th and 9th respectively, on
account of the death of Mr. Ohas. Dewey,
assignee.
Newbernian: Produce-dealer Hamil
ton has some Hyde county pumpkins
which will turn the scale at 47 pounds
and upwards. -About 1,500 bushels
rough rice were purchased in our market,

A. Russell, who was so dangerously cut
on Tuesday night, still remains in a pre
carious condition. I he young gentle
man is now lying: at his father's residence
in the upper portion of the county, about
twenty miles distant from this city. In. I
Frank Duffy, who visited him on Wed-
nesday, informs us. that the wound is a
very sciou3 one, the knife having pene-
trated the chest bone, and entered the
lung cavity.

"W. Kincey brought in on Monday some
Irish potatoes of a second crop raised
this year." He planted in July, and some
of the potatoes now harvested weigh
over one pound each. On the night
of the 19th inst, Mr. Kit Bland, of Pitt
county, had the misfortune to lose two
of his sons, aged respectively 8 and 10
years. They were attacked with con
gestive chill and died within an hour of
each other. A sad case of bereave
ment occurred this month in the lamily
of Mrs. "Wilson, near Lenoir Institute.
One of her oldest sons, Albert H. Wil
son, - after a long illness from typhoid
fever, died on the 1st of October, and
only five days later a younger brother,
Benjamin P. Wilson, was carried away
by the same disease.
Henderson Review. Two of the Re
publican missionaries from New York
spoke here yesterday. The cotton
gin of Mr. Thomas Smith, near Bear
Pond, -and a considerable, quantity of
cotton was consumed by fire on Wednes
day night last. The fire wa3 accidental,

F. Greene, of Franklin, will address the

row. -Two of .North Carolina's
most distinguished orators, C. C. Clark,
Esq., 'of Newbern, and Hon. George
Davis, of Wilmington, will address the
people of Wilson to-morrow, Saturday.
- Last Pnday, near Cedar liock,
Franklin county, a little child of Mr.
Joha J. May came to his death by burn-
lpg. A friend gives us the following
particulars: Mr. May was at a cotton
gin about a mile from home, and his lit
tle son was hauling cotton to the gin for
him. At about 13 o'cloek Mr. May sent
his son home to bring his dinner, but on
reaching home he found that it was not
ready. Airs. May went out leaving the
by by the fire, and pretty soon there
after heard him scream, and upon run
ning into the house found that he was
literally Bin a blaze. Mrs. May did
everything that was possible to entin-
guish the flames and save her child, but
all her efforts were unavailing, though
her hands were burned to the bone. The
child lived six or eight hour3.
