Everything in their power will be done for the comfort and pleasure of the excursionists, and we feel well as sured that those who go will have no cause to regret having participated. The President. The news from'the President to-day is favorable. He rested well last night. There were no rigors and the attending physicians state that the improvement in his condition is plainly perceptible. The President himself talks cheerfully of his condition and of his prospects for re covery. And all 01 tnis is in tne lace 01 the fact that ex-Surgeon General Ham mond says that the chances are ninety in the hundred against him. Wfrih Knowing. v As this js the season when we are in fested with insects of all kind3, it is well to remember that the prompt application of an alkali to the bitten part allays the irritation and commonly at once relieves the suffering consequent upon a class of injuries, which, although small, are often exceedingly annoying and even trouble some, especially in the case'of children and persons with sensitive ssins. Soda and ammonia will answer the purpose. Disease imon? the Chickens. And now we hear that there is a sort of epidemic among the chicken?, which is called a sort of apoplexy. The fowl is in apparent good health and suddenly f turns over, falls down, gives .a few kicks and then shuffles off this mortal coil, and nothing is left but the carcass of a dead chicken. Some attribute it to too high feeding, together with the bugs and good scratching which the chickens get at this season of the year in the way of worms and so forth. Who now will tell us what is good for chicken apoplexy, or chicken cholera ? 1 To Builders and others-JGo to Jaqo Bi's for Sash, Blinds and Doors, Glass, &c Yoa can get fall sizes,, and at the lowest prices, -. . t Before the Major. Tucker Townsend, the boy arrested yesterday for attempting to steal brasses from Captain Taft's little steamer, the Biz, was discharged this morning by the Mayor for want of evidence sufficient to convict. The defendant in this case is known to police circles and has been in durance vile before. But as we already stated, the evidence in the case was not sufficient to convict, aad the prisoner was released. To-Oaf Weak.. Today week- the great question" of i Prohibition or Anti-Prohibition will be decided. Both sides are badly scared and are whistling to keep up courage. It is a difficult matter to forecast the re sult of the ballots. We think the full prohibition vote will be cast and that it is extremely doubtful if the Anti can get out their strength, yet we would not like to risk our reputation as a good guesser by saying what will be the re sult. - i Gsat Hairs are Honorable, but their premature appearance is annoying. Parker's Hair Balsam is popular for cleanliness and promptly restoring the youthful color. The Hog Cholera A friend at Washington, Rappahan nock county, Va., seeing in the Journal an enquiry as to a remedy for hog chol era, writes us as follows : I see in your valuable paper, the Journal, an enquiry about a remedy for the hog cholera. I thought, as I have been a reader of the Journal Tor several years, ,that I would contribute something to the welfare and benefit of your other readers. The best preventive is to take what we call burr dock root, wash and slice it, keep it in the slop tub and feed the hogs. I have examined the agricultural reports from Washington, written by able scientific men, and they all agree that there is no sure cure for the disease. I raise the wattled breed of hogs, the best breed we have, and while my neighbors have lost more or less from the disease I have never lost one. But some say that it is my super stitious notions and call me an old fogy, although ny neighbors now call on me to get in the stock. I raise the Essex, Berkshire, and Chester breeds. I wish I could send you a pair of full-blooded Essex wattled shoats. The writer is an old and successful farmer and his experience is worth not ing by the stock-raisers in this locality. We thank him most cordially for the kind wishes he has expressed for tbe Editor of this paper. Kidney Complaints ot all descriptions are relieved at once, and speedily cured by Kidney-Wort. It seems intended by nature for the cure of all diseases of the kidneys caused, oy weakness and 1 debility. Its great tonic Dowers are especially directed to tne re moval of this class of diseases. We know of sersons that have suffered for thirty years that have been permanently cured bv taking Kidnev-Wort a short time. Trv it. either liquid or dry. Sun. Vennor'a Guesses at August. It seems from the Canada papers that Mr. Henrr G. Yennor has extended his "revised" predictions so that they include August in detail, as given in the follow inff statement, which our readers should cut out and paste in a convenient place for reference: August 1 Probably warm and oppressive; 2 and 5 Generally pleasant weather, fairly warm, days, and cool to cold evenings and nights; 6 Fair and pleasant; 7 (Sunday) Heat and storm; 8 and 10 Sultry weather, with heavy showers, cooler evenings and nights; 11-13 Heat again in the United States, with cloudy, and sultry weather, storms in Canada; 14 (Sunday) Cooler change; 15 Cooler to cold andlcloudy and pleasant; 16 Storms throughout portions of Virginia; 17 and 18 Hail-j storms and frosts probably in some por tions; 19 and 20 Heat and storms; 21 Sultry and showery; - 22--Sultry and windy; 23 and 24 Heat and wind; 25 and 26 Heavy storms on the lakes, on the St. Lawrence and around New York; 27 and 29 Cooler weather, with rains and frosts in the northern section; 30 and 31 Fair! and pleasant weather, with cool evenings and nights, with indications of returning heat. , Capt- Paul Boy ton, of swimming fame, in a recent communication says: Of late carry a stock of St. Jacobs Oil in my boat, and I have but little trouble. From constant exposure I am somewhat subject to rheumatic pains, and nothing would ever Denemt me until l got noia oi uus great German remedy. I would sooner do without food for days than be with out this remedy for one hour. In fact I would not attempt a trip without it. Freshwater Perch, Trout and Black- fish Hooks and Lines. Yesterday morning a couple of young men who were engaged in diving for what ever they could find at the wharf of the New York steamship, succeeded in bring ing to the surface a very large bomb shell with fuse and cap attached. They tried to dispose of it at the junk store but were warned not to carry that infer nal machine near the store. They soon found they had an elephant on their hands and carried it to the edge of the wharf ad dropped it back into the river. Study your interest. Richard Cowan, the venerable darkey whom we alluded to two days, ago as having been arraigned before a Justice of the Peace for assault and battery with a deadly weapon upon the person of Ella his wife, and whose trial was fixed at 11 o'clock yesterday morning, failed to put in an appearance at the proper time yes terday, and has since skipped the town. His bondsman thinks, however, he will have him here in a few days, and will then have the extreme unction of seeing him boarding at the hotel de Howard until the Criminal Court convenes for the August term. Yon Bet! We yesterday, on information furnish ed us by a party whom' we deemed suffi ciently well infermed'of the facts of the case, stated that we heard that a Prohi bitionist offered to bet an Anti-Prohibitionist that the Prohibition bill would not be defeated by 20,000 majority, and that the Anti-Prohibitionist would not take the bet. This afternoon we learn that the bet was made and the money $50, was put up this 2 P. M. The same party who gave us this last information states that the Prohibitionist was willing to make another bet of a similar charac ter, but could find no takers. . Blrer Sews No river steamers this week since the departure of the steamer D. Murchison on Monday. The steamer A. P, Hurt is reported stuck in the mud 6 miles this side of Fayette ville, and the North tstate 16 miles this side. The Murchison got got as far as Cypress Creek, 40 miles from Fayetteyille, and there the passengers, who were bound through landed and either rode or footed it the balance of the way. The water in the riyer is reported lower than it ever has been in the mem ory of the oldest inhabitant before. The crews of the flats or lighters belonging to the steamer Hurt are made to get out and walk in order to lighten the flats. This will give our readers some idea of the low stage of the water. i The Hew Agent. i The vacancy made by Mr. T. M.
