Sicgfild, Manager of the Advertis ing Department of the St. Paul rioveer Press. Still, those of them who do desk-work are tempted to stimulate, for it's very hard'on the nerves and stomach." "As for example?" 'As for example, in my own cafte. ;i stuck to my desk on this paper until my nerves were like a bunch of telegraph wires after a alc, and my stomach kept a vout as good time .is a two dollar watch. The latest and certainly the strang est use to which I electricity jhas been put is to a process of "giving age1' to whiskey and wines. It is tho discbv ery of a Californiah, whoj has succeed ed in setting patents from the United States, and has at the same time interf ested tho internal revenue commission er to such an extent t.hat special privi leges to experiment witii bonded whis key have been accorded him. A series of trials are being conducted at. a store on Washington tree, , between Mont gomery and Sansome, iintjei the super vision of a tlcpkty . reveque collector. The process in question ias exceedingly simple, and, it ail is true that is claim ed for it, it will revolutionize the liquor and wine trade." It is nothing more than a quick and cheap method of re- lining, that being done in from twelve to forty-eight hours;, which formerly required years to accomplish. Two blocks of carbon wrapped up in flannel are inserted (n the liquor to ' be purified, and these jjcarboris arc con nected with the positive and negative poles of an ordinaryjlkush electric ma chine. Electricity is then,' generated by the usual means and the process of pm ification and refining proceeds. The chemical action upon the liquor is such that all impurities arelattracted to the negative carbon-cover)ingflannel. The excess of fusel oil also!! finds lodgment here, and when the cloth is removed, it looks as if hadjbeen steeped for a day and a year inrar,Flat bribe. It is asserted that the liquor j does not lose proof during the -process. jLight wines require about two hours of this electric churning; fortified wipes are rendered mellow in twelve hours, and the hard est and deadliest sample of alcoholic distillation is made i comparatively harmless within forty eight hours. It all that invention is is cjaimea lor founded on facts the its the proper importance- upon wine-making industry pan hardly be overestimated. It w ll then be no longer necessary to sepdj casks of on sea voyages around the world, port and Eastern wine merchants need no longer have recourse to the prevarication French wine, having undergone a voyage, is necessarily ' butter than that sea the domestic product Age, the great disideratum for Californ a wine can be djnaiiio-elec oon 'can own produced by the aid of a trie machine. A special dispatch from Bostqn says: General Butlers shrewdness in iuakin friends who may possibly be useful to him is illustrated by his efforts to con ciliate the Southerners attending the Institute Fair. It. is well known that Butler has his eye on the Presidency He knows that he is more vigorously hated in the, South than in any other section of the country, and ho acts ac cordingly. He was invitedj to attend the Foreign Exhibition opening, but was not present, lie presided at the opening of the Institute IFair, not be cause he admired its managers more than those of the; Foreign Exhibition, but because he knew that about the fail wuuld centre the Southern interest. Several Southern States, notably North Carolina, were .largely repres sented at this show. Hefthereupon puts himself out to be gracious to those Southern gentlemen,! and has so well succeeded with Governor Jarvis, j of North Carolina, jthe lirst prominent Southerner to arrivej as to cause this gentleman to say publicly that Butler is a much better man than he had sup posed, or words to jthat effect. Whan Mrs. 'Stonewall" Jackson and daughter arrived in Boston jthis morning- they were waited upon by Butler, who (in ; his blandest manner paid the widow jof the distinguished soldier many atten tions.'and escorted her downjto break-, fast. -; '- Fifty prominent business men Irom North "Carolina.! many of them from Wilmington and its vicinity, jauived in Boston Saturday night, twentysfive more are expected to arriveon Monday. We tried several medicines, none oi which seemed to do her any good, but she continued to get worse, and finally raised large amounts of blood from her lungs We called in a family physician, but he failed to do her any good, i We then called in a physician a most skillful professor in one of our colleges he said that she could not get well. At this time a friend who had been enred by DR. WM. HALL'S BALSAM FOR THE LUNGS, advised me to give it a trial.
