The Arctic Homo at nracu Heroes Last. New Yokk. February 23 Not with standing the cold, cutting rain which fell in blinding sheets this moruin?, the nier at the loot ot East 23rd street was crowded by a well dressed, orderly throng, who stood patiently in the storm against which they were adequately provided with umbrellas and water proofs, awaiting the arrival of the tug Catalpa, having on board the remains of the arctic heroes. At 10 o'clock the tug swung into the pici and landed the marine guard and band, and those who were to tako part in the procession formed on both sides of (ho street. The arrangements completed, the work of disembarking tbo caskets, which held all that remained of the heroes who perished amid the icd ol the Arctic seas, began. They were brought forth and placed in hearses in the folio wing order: Lieut. Commander Do Long, Seamen Kook, fioertz, Drerstcr and Ah Sam, Machinist Leo and Coal Heaver Iver son. The procession was formed, headed by a carriage containing the Right Ucv. H. C. Fotter, I). D.. who was to officiate at the services. The hearses followed, and then came the survivors of the Jcannette expedition and tho olllccr of the Jcannette relief expedition and mourners. Tbe lino ot march was through 23d street and Fifth avenue, thence Kast to 42ad srrcct and thence to the church of the Holy Trinity at 12nd street and Mad ison avenue, where a dense crowd was struggling tor admittance. Alter much difliculty the tuncral procession passed into the church in tho following order: Bishop Fotter. tho Kcvi W. T. Watkins. the pastor of tho church and 1 an associate, chanting I know tha my Redeemer liveth," ' The Lord cir tho and the Lord, takcth away." The surviving omcers 01 too Jcannette came next and led by Commodore Up shur, a knot oi naval officers in glitter ing uniforms, and then came the seven sealed caskets, csch ot which was borne by eight marines. In tho space front log the .altar rested Iscvcn heavily drap ped catafalques. On -these tbo caskets were laid, in lh centre rested tno one holding the remains of tho young com mandcr. On it wero laid his sword and uniform, betokening bis rank, ana a largo American Hag draped grace fully was laid in peaceful folds over tho whole. The other caskets wero cover cd only by bluo flags, doited with white stars. A few minutes later tho floral tributes were brougat in rich and daz zling profusion. By this time tho church was ullcd. Mrs. Dc Long, her IitUo son and her father and mother, who had come over lrom Brooklyn with tho remains, occupied ! scats facing the altar. Just back sat ' her brothers and their wives and tho Misses Bradi ford, daughters of tho arctic artist. All wero dressed in tbo deepest mourning. and sat throughout the services with their heads bowed upon their -clasped hands. To the left ot the sad group sat Messrs Melville, Nindcrman;andNoros, in full uniform, their grief betokened by the crane which fluttered ou their lctt arms. The choir sang the hymn "Dom ini Refuziaiu.'! after which pastor Wat kins read tho 15th chapter ot Conns leave New Xcrk at 9 o'clock thu even ing, accompanied by the brother of tho deceased and ten medical officers of the navy. Thcro will bo no formal cere mony here. The remains will be met by a delegation of medical officers, who will accompany them to their final resting placo at the homo of Dr. Am bler's mother, in Fauquier county, Va., about thirty miles from this city. The journey from this city will bo made in a special ham tendered by the Virginia Midland road. It is a good rule to accept only such medicines as have, after long years of trial, proved worthy of confidence. The casket was placed just without the cnancel raif and just behind it rested another casket containing tho remains of the mother of Collins, who died six month alter ms departure for tho Arctic regions.
