No. it will not. You arc right on that
point. But wo will tell you how you
can easily turn the State over again
to the Republicans. Let tho free trade
editors in the East, who. imagine that
they carry the braius of the party in the

tariff question; let them insist that there
be no change in the revenue laws,
but that tbo pcoplp of the center and
West must remain content under
the domination of a horde
of irresponsible revenue officials; let
them preach tho doctrine that the
heavier the taxation on home products
the happier the. people are; let them
write a few more editorials which may
bo used by tho Statesvillc American as
a nick wherewith to break tho Demo

The store of Mr. D. Steijes, on the
corner of Castle and Sixth streets, was
broken open by thieves last night, who
succeeded, however, in stealing nothing
but an old pistol. Mr. Steijes found
the door ajar when he went to open the
store this morning, and upon entering
found his books and papers scattered
promiscuously about tho floor, and a
hasty survey showed that the store had
been very thoroughly ransacked, the
thieves evidently searching for monejj
of which there was a small amount in
the store, but which they failed to find
There is no clue as yet as to who did
the deed, but it appears that if he could
not obtain tho ''sinews of war" ho was
bound to have its ''munitions" and stole
the pistol.

A Domestic Lecture.
The play of "Young Mrs. Winthrop,"
that was such a success at the
Madison Square Theatre last year, will
be presented in this city on March 17.
It is a beautiful domestic story by
Bronson Howard, the well known
dramatist and author ot "Banker's
Daughter," "Saratoga" and other suc
cessful plays, and from a tglance at its
synopsis we can well imagine why it
has captured the critics and theatre
goers in New York City as it has. It
is a story that olten happens in real life,
of a husband and wife drifting apart
through misunderstandings and are
happily; brought together by some little
incident. Such is the play of "YoungMis
Winthrop" that is to be produced here.
No married couple can afford to miss it
and lor i that matter no better lecture
can be given to those about .to marry
than to witness the performance of this.
It is a gem of dramatic literature,' and
as such will long live in the hearts of
the people.

Editor Review: I find in the Star
to-day. in the editorial column, the
following statement ! which is so very
inaccurate that I confess I was sur
prised: "The exports of Fair Trade
England are five times greater than her
imports." A reference to Ency. lint.,
Vol. vi., Art. Commerce, page 204,
will show that there is an exces3 of
120.000.000 or, in round numbers,
$500,000,000 of imports, and the cause
of this apparent balancebf trade against
England is thus accounted lor by the
fact that she is a creditor nation, a fact
which does not seem to be generally
considered when the balance ot trade is
discussed in this country, i he excess
of imports into England is evidence of
m. L!L!l r
ner prosperity, wnue a use exuioit ior
the uniteditates, a aeDior nation, wouia
demonstrate iust the contrary. Free
trada has made England a creditor' ol
the whole world and this is one of the
strongest arguments in its favor.
