There was also - m r - an Increase of about 7 per cent, in the exports of petroleum. The principle decrease was in wheat, tho largest ilem of exoort next to raw cotton. The total shipment of wheat lor the year was 71. 013.SSO bushels, against 110.343.183 bushels in 1682 -a decline ol 39.329.905 bushels, at a valuation of about $10,000 000. In flour there was some gain over the proceeding year, the shipments being 9,213.313 barrt-ls. against 7.567.G70 bar re!s in 1632. which still left a defic't ol 3J.000.(XX) bushels In this cereal at a , raluatiou ot about $ 10.000.000. On the other hand, however, there was a very important Increase in the shipments of corn.the quantity being Cl.S75.0i0 bush els, against 15.423.593 In the previous year, the ratio of Increased exceeding 300 per cent. Thnm was a verv decided increase also In the export ol meat products. rvMillT beef, bacon and cattle. The quantity o! fresh beef shipped last jcar 117.790.3 U pounds, against 54,420 630 nd In 15S2 an Increase- of more than 100 per cent. Bacon and ham increased 22 per cent, and cattle 133 per cent. Taking the exports of food products altogether, as represent ed by value, there wis an Increase amounting to $17,000,000; cereals showing a loss of 3 000,000. and meat and dairy products a gain ot 20.000.000. It Is evident from this that the food wants ol Europe are I all log Q, but that our. exports of 'wheat are contingent more upon competition than before. The imports of merchandise during the jear were. In value, abui sixty-six millions less tnaa in the previous year; but tho reduction was not contined to few articles, as in tho case of exports, being generally dUtributed over the whole; an 'evidence the dullness of tradi more than of any thins else Such articles as coffee, tea, 'susar. ftuits and wine all exhibit an Important decreiue in value, amounting ult-ther to torn f'HJtieen million H liar, though in the firt ihrrfc thre was an important Increase inquttitilies. In raw lumlerials and partially ruanu lectured articles, there was a wre de cided decrease still, as to values, but in many Instances here also thero was an increara in quanliles. In iron and its rnanufaclurvt there was a decreaso in both quantities and values. Only one million dollars' worth of steel mils were Imported, against flfe millions in 18a2 Tin plates increased both In quantities and value The toUl decrease In tie value o! the imports of Iron and its manufactures was about twenty millions.
