Tlio Now York, Norlolk and Charleston Kallrond. Our readers will recollect that we Dublishcd some weeks aero an account of the proposed construction of a rail road from or tolk to Charleston, b. O., to be ODeratcnl as a part of the general system :o which tho road now building on this peninsula will belonz. We have recently noticed in some of tuc Haiti- more papers articles ami interviews with prominent business men or tuat city expressing donbts as to the con struction of the proposed road irom Norfolk toCuarleston, and scouting the idea that the prosperity of Baltimore would in any way be affected if.it should bo built. Hut Messrs. John A. Ilambleton & Co.. tho sagacious South street bankers of that city, seem to take a different view or the matter. In their last weekly circular they say : "Amonc the items of interest to the commerce ! our city may be mention ed tho proposed construction, now un der contract, of tho New York, Nor folk and Charleston Railway. Its com petition will strike a serious blow at our r . - a traae.as u contemplates a une Beginning atr either of the cities of Norfolk or Portsmouth, in Virginia, and extending Southward, through the States of Vir ginia, North Carolina and South Caro lina, to Charleston, a Jdistanco of 330 miles. The line will be a part of a through lino, from Boston and New, York, by way of Philadelphia, Wilmini; ton and tho Delaware Peninsula Itoad. The Delawaro lload is now' being ex tended Southward by tho Pennsylvania Company to a point opposito the North ern terminus of the New York, Norfolk and Charleston line, and the two will connect through the waters of Hampton Koads and J, or tolk I arbor. The 220 miles of air-lino trotu Norfolk to Charleston, by cutting out the exist ing triangular, circuitous lines, will effect a saving of 180 miles and seven hours in time between 1 lost on. New York and Philadelphia in tho North, and Charleston. Savannah. New Or-j leans and Mobile in the South. It M claimed tor the uo w route therefore, thatj it will command the bulk of through paSMingcr.and freight Ira flic between tho North and South. . Connections at Charleston with thct Charlestou and Savannah Kail road Avill givo it the most direct route for all Florida points. At Yemassec it will h.urc connection with the (Jcorgfa Central to Shrcveport, La., and by the Texas Pacific through to San Francisco. Oriancock Eastern I iryinian. w, Cured of Nostalgia. The Washington correspondent of the Philadelphia Iticord tells this one: Do you know IhAv many soldiers difd of homesickness during the late war?' said an cx-Fcderal colonel. Ye, sir ; they call it nostalgia that's the medi cal term for homesickness, Men died apparently without a cause not from fright : homesickness va the causa io nine cac out of ten. I remember at- . - i -tl .! one time i wa in t iiarze "i a iepoi ii lAiiisville, Ky., where lt","K)eonvale cents wcri waiting for strength to go to the front. I noticed that many nt them urew worse, instead of better. It puzzred the siirgeon-i. jit was not due to a relapM; it ws not the old disease at all. It did not MeJii to 1h h new dieus?. I looked into it a little. and then I told the surgeon that I thought it was nothing but no-ftalgia. I had a l-hance to irove t0:it I was right. One f theej sick well men came to me the next dav. 'Colonel' he t-aid. 1 want leave of absence for a day or two. I want to go home and seo my folks. I am pining away for a sight of my old home. I believe 1 shall die if I don't go." i ()n inquiring I found that his home was riirht across in Indiana, and that he had an idea that he could see the smoke rising from its chimney. He had not leen home for several years, and he was fretting away in sight of that smoke. I wa.s not supposed to Jet any of my convalescents go 3 anywhere, except to the front, but I determined to try an experiment with this sallow, pale-faced young man. Well, fir,1 I said, how long will you be gone?1 This is Fridav. lie replied; I will be back on Monda-.' 'No, I said. you can ftay until F'ridayof next week All right. he said looking better al ready. On the iut Jiday he return- Ctl a new mill " l1m nl! i-ifrlif t rrlin Colonel.' he half fsliontml when ' ha saw me; 'I'm readv to go to tho front at once. That was all I wanted.' It wa a fact. He had leen cured of-nostal gia . JOHN JACOB ASTOK. His Miles of Houses, His Heavy Taxes and His Charities. I The third richest man in the Uiuou is John Jacob Astor, the chief owner ami heir ot the Astor estate. Unlike many millionarires, Astor has both name and riches a name linked with fabulous wealth for three succeeding generations. The estimated value ot the Astor estate is from S1X),000,000 to $100,000,000, a veritable mountain of gold. John Jacob and William B. are its sole owners, the former's interest said to be two-thirds. For nearly a century the title of !eiog "the land lords of New York" has attached its elf to them. John Jacob's interests ia houses, lots and farms mav be com puted in the thousands. . Among tho valuable buildings principally owned by Mr. Astor as chief heir to the estate is the old landmark, the Astor House. which wa.s sold to his father bv his grandfather, the founder of the inu. niensc estate, for $1. Its present val ue is said to be $2,000,000, being assess ed at 1,7.0,000. The Guarantee and Indemnity buildicg, cruelly owned by Mr. Astor, was purchased a short time ago for $1,000,000, while the Astor es tate pays taxes on $50,000,000 of real estate situated below Chambers street, most ot which consists ot business houses on Broadway and Wall street There is scarcely a ward, street or ave nue in the city in which Mr. Astor does not own real estate, on which the total amount of taxes is over $400,000 annually. . - Another point of difference between Mr. Astor and other. millionaires is in his investments. In Wall street his namo never appears as a speculator and seldom as an investor or seller of stocks, bonds or other similar securi ties. Having an income of 10 rer cent. on the cross amount invested in real estate, lie quietly buys more houses or lands when an opportunity offers. In an inventory made of his various prop erties an item of $6,000,000 in cash an peared, as "money in trust companies and banks waiting investment in real estate." Mr. Astor is a man ol strik ing personal appearance, being over six feet in height, stout, somewhat in clined to corpulence and straight as a,ri wnl a a 1 1 arrow, u nen on me street 4s quicK, with small gray side whiskers, invari ably attract attention. IJis dress is simple and surprisingly neat. At busi ness or on the street he wears a uroaq cloth cut away frock coat, with pants to match, comfortable looking shoes, always bixrhlv polished, while in his hand usually swings as he walks a large purple silk umbrella. In Sum mcr his costume is changed to a black scrgo coat and pants of some lighter color, whilo an easy straw hat rests lightly on his ivory white hair. N Y Momma Journal. Wilmington District.
