Store .'.Breaking.
Somo thief broke one of the large
plate glass windows of Mr. A. Less
man's bakery, on North Second street,
at about 2:30 o'clock this morning, and
stole a jar of candy and two loaves of

reach. The pane of glass which was
broken was very thick and expensive,
and the breaking caused a report al
most as loud as the discharge of a pis

Between $50 and $60 worth of proper

dollar's worth ot goods. : There is no

Strangers in Town.
There was quite a large number of
strangers arrived in the city last night
and this morning, many of whom were
delegates to the Congressional Conven

The arraneemQntg are now nearly

the Pavillion of the Hotel Brunswick.
The Cornet Concert Club have been
invited to accompany the excursionists
and have accepted the invitation and
will make delightful music n tho way
down tho river. Kerelfey's Quadrille
Band will furnish the music lor the

to make tho affair all that could be de

under the auspiuies of the Carolina

The Magazines.
Southern Historical Society Papers for
June have been received and are well
worth a careful perusal. n this num

History of Reconstruction in South Car

the 4 -Edgefield Riots," the -Twenty-eighth
of June," and the Hamburg
Riot" are discussed and much light
thrown upon those dark and gloomy
days. Besides this very valuable pa
per, there are others relatiug to the war
which are 01 much interest. The Pa
pers are published at Richmond, Va.,
at a subscription price of $3 per an

always considered this one of the best

The new banner for the Grand Com-

to-day von exhibition at tho store of
Messrs. George R. French & Sons, on.
Front street. It was designed ' by Mr.
J. McD. French and painted by an art
ist in Boston, Mass. As Chairman of
the Committee appointed for the pur
p se by the Grand Commandery, Mrr
French designed a plan for the bans
ntr which, with seveial other de
signs, was '- submitted to the
eitire committee.' and his de
sign was unanimously adopted. We
were shown the design before, it was
transmitted to the artist, and gave ' a
description of the same at the time, so
tbat it becomes unnecessary to describe
it now. The banner is 43 inehes long
by 33 inches wide, i3 bordered with
heayy bullion and gold tassels and is p-
beautiful and appropriate piece of
workmanship. It Is adorned with the
North Carolina coat of arms besides
the usual symbols of masonry and it
cost $100.
About Postmasters.
i The second volume of an interesting
work called the government blue book
has been received, and from its pages
we learn that there are, in round num
bers, about 50 000 postmasters in the
United States whoe salaries run from
$8,000 per annum down to nine cents.
The individual receiving the largest
salary in thiscapacity is the postmaster
at New York, whose salary is $8,000,
the same as that of the Postmaster Gen
eral himself. The smallest salary paid
appears to, be that of II. H. Forrest,
postmaster ' at Repale, Pitt
county, N.-C, whose salary, according
to this register was nine cents last year.
Postmasters below a certain grade, it
will be understood, are paid according
to the number of stamps cancelled at
their offices. Formerly they were paid
according to tho number of stamps sold(
but tmi system was not found to be
satisfactory, some of the postmasters
making a business of selling stamps
in order to get their, percentages.
Now they arc paid by the number ot
stamps canceled, receiving the full
value up to the first $50, and a certain
proportion alter reaching that sum
Out of the 50, 000 postmasters in the
United States there are 2,000, according
to this register, whose salaries arc less
than $10 each. Of those postmasters
whose salaries were less than one dol
lar, Mississippi, Louisiana and Pennsyl
vania have one each, Virginia, Tennes
see, Alabana, Wisconsin, Kentucky.
Minnessota have two each, while North
Carolina has no less than a dozen who
get less than one dollar a year.

to the fact that first quality shirts are
