C, as sccoad-class matter. X OUR CHbSEN' LEADERS. It wa3 a ffoo'l ilay's work, says the Charleston News and Courier, that was done at Chicago yesterday. The va3t council which. represents jnst now not only th views and interests ot a great political party, but as well the hopes and aspirations of all who detire that our Government shall be igj the hands of honest and able men. ha3 been equal to its high ckit. Unterrified by the threats of spoilsmen and disregarding the pleading of pririial fri.'nd3 in b'-'-halfot statesmen who deserve well of their party and ol their country, the Convention -tvas ch.osen as thocanmdat tor the highest office irr the land a man who combines iu his own person all the elements which give promise of tri umphant election and a sale and honor able administration. Grover Cleveland for President! The name 13 platform enough for any honest party a pledge adequate to the require ments ot every honest voter. It means reform reform in administration, re form in taxation. It means justice justice to friends and to loes alike. It means honesty that frank honesty in dealing with the people which i3 so rarely found nowadays in public ser vants. It means a wise and Democratic impartiality, an unswerving integrity of purpose and a faithCul discharge of the public trusts. The nomination of Governor Cleveland marks, as no other 1 . . . single act could do, the contrast between the Democratic party and the Republican party. It was the result of no greedy scramble of factions; there was no bargaining: for purchasable votes, no packing of the Convention fefall with a riotous claque; no secre1. jugglery in the interest of the nominee; in a word, there was a conspicuous absence of the methods which secured the nomination of Blaine. The Demo cralic National Convention assembled in comparative harmony. The interests of candidates were subordinated to. the interests of the party, and iheso to the interests ot the country. Upon a vast majority of the delegates personal pre ferences hung loosely, the paramount feeling being a desire to vindicate the purposes ot the party and to nominate the best man. Cleveland was the strongest candidate frim ply because he had proved himself to be the fittest. His record of personal integrity and high administrative qualities was his strength in" the Convention, as it wiil be his strength at the polls. The choice of Governor Hendricks, of Indiana, as the candidate for Vice President, is an excellent one in every way. It cannot tail to please that large section ot the party by whom some kind of vindication of "the old ticket" had come to be regarded as a political necessity and with the cordial relations that have been established between the friends of McDonald and those of Hen dricks, the nomination' fairJy anchors Indiana to the Democracy. Thomas Andrew Hendricks was born near Zanevi-le Ohio, in 1819. His. family, ducing his infanncy, re moved to Indiana, where he was brought up as a farmer's son. He was educat ed in a Western college and choosing the protes3ion of law-. soon obtained a considerable pratica as well as great local popularijty, -He was ejected to the Indiana! Legislature in -1848? In 1851 he waslec4d to Congress. He was commissioners! the General Land Ofiico from 1855 to 1859. when he resigned the office. In 1863 he was chosen United States Senator, and in 1872 he was elected Governor of inaiana, a position mat ne re tainqd until 1877. Since that time he has been a private citizen. In 1876 he was on the ticket wilh Mr. Tilden, and carried his State by a majority of 5.555 votes.. In ail the races he has made for office in Indiana he has invariably and largely led his ticket. It was unques tionably owing to his name on the ticket with Mr. Tilden tbat'lndiana was car ried for the Democracy in 1876. It is high as well as just praye-toay that Goyernor Hendricks is a man ev ery Way wbrfty to be assdefatedr withr Governor Cleveland! on the National Democratic ticket. His private and public life have been singularly pure. In all the heated contests in which he has borne a part his integrity has never been called into question.' Indeed his character is absolutely unassailable, and his nomination is a sabstintial addition to the moral as well as political strength of the ticket. v 1 the PLATPouai, : The platform, adopted by the Demo-J cralic Convention, at Chicago, which we published entiro in yesterday's is sue, will commend itself to our readers as a masterly enunciation ot the party's principles, while at the same time it is a fearful arraignment of the crimes of tho He publican party while it. has hid tho reins of'porme"'';! "comt plain that it is too7lone, Jmt. from Jx careful perusal; we can ' discoYsrc noth- inz which could well have been left out. It is a remarkable document 'and we hope that it may be read by every voter iu the State. It is a broad and c imprehen sive document and its planks are broad enough and j thick enough and stroo enoughfor every vo?cr Inthellnd to stand jupon . There f9 bb auhlquly about it, but all who ij-ead:niay easily&nderstand it, except, perhaps, 1 tlfose-who from selfish partisan motives would not wish to understand, and who a? a matter of course, use every . effort to distort its meaning. It is Democratic to the core,- and ;oo uch a IpUHfojnv with Cleveland and Hendrickaas our leaders, and with a State ticket, the excelience of whixih. has. .seldom been equalled. North Carolina ought to roll up a Democratic majority of. at least 15,000 votes. ,,-... - . -.. - ri No Water tor KleVen- Iav'8:":" The shipwrecked crew ot the British bark Benefactress were ad -i ft - in an open boat, supporting life on -some bits ot dry bread and a few apples,,.
