C, I at second-class matter. 1 The lion. James Speed, a di9tin gaished Rspublican and the last sur vivor of the men com posies Presiden t Lincoln's cabinet, has bolted the nomi nation of Blaine. His reasons for .so doing relate to Mr. Blaine's views ot oGr foreiirn relaiion3 and his views touching the "surplus revenue." Mr. Speed openly declares that voting tbe Democratic ticket is the least of the evils that an honest Republican has to face in this crisis, and be cites the fact that he -voted with the Democrats to kiil off the foliy and wickedness of the Know-Nothings, and has never regret ted it." The Cbillian Government has declar ed a war of extermination against the condor. It offers a reward of $5 for every condor killed. The hunting of this bird of prey has, under tbe cir cumstances, beccnie a lucrative busi ness, though it seems doubtful, if one considers the astounding powers of the bird and its wonderful habits, that the Government can or will ever succeed in destroying the species at any price. A Southern paper, in speaking of the matter, says: ' Shooting the condor on the wing is almost out of tho ques tion ; for it sails at altitudes far beyond the reach of the human eye.aud fosts on peak3 immeasuredly above the clouds. It has been seen at altitudes of 20,000 feet. It haunts the whole Western slope of the Andes not only Chile, but Peru, Bolivia and Patagonia. Latterly (he birds have so increased as to form a veritable scourge notwithstanding the tact that the female lays but two eggs at a time, and that condor-hunting has been a regular and lucrative calling for more than a century." : Without exception the members or the New xork Democratic State C6ni mittee, which met at Albany last week' brought encouraging news from their different localities. Where disaffection had been anticipated there came assur ances of a united and enthusiastic party with the promise of a largely increased Democratic vte over former Presiden--tial elections. A marked feature of the, talk of all the committeemen and out siders present was the concurrence of all in the statement that the young men who will this year cast their Grst vote r President are nearly all arraying themselves on tbe side of Cleveland. Instances were given by nearly all the committeemen to demonstrate that fact in UHr sections, and also showing that this feature was not confined to young men brought up in Democratic families bat was equally as marked with those cunnected with Republican families The selection of Mr. Eugene Kelly, an eminent New York banker, as a candi date for elector-at-large in place of Mr. William Purcell, declined, and the ap pointment of ex-Mayor Cooper as chair man of the executive committee having immediate charge of the New York canvass, are regarded in all respects the best selections that could have been made. The executive committee will open headquarters this week in the Hoffman House, in New York City and at once formulate a plan for an ac tive and aggressive campaign. Here is an hem from the Philadel phia Press, relative to the production of tobacco, which we wish might stimu late the farmers of thi3 section to enter into its cultivation : Tobacco i3 now grown in 87 of the 9f counties of North Carolina, but it is a staple m perhaps not more than a dozen of them. Rockingham. Person. Cas well and Granville counties constituie the flower of the tobacco belt, each raising in 1879 about 4,500,000 pounds, and this year the crop in each one of these is estimated at from 5,000,000 to 5.250.000. The whole acreage of the Stale in 1682 was 64,482. and it is esti mated that at least 70,000 acres are in cultivation this year. The whole tobac co crop in 1882 amounted to 32.275.792 pounds. All the leading authorities now agree that the crop of 1884 will approximate 65,000,000 pounds. But the best feature in . the raistng of tobacco there is that North Carolina leads the tobacco states in the average prices obtained for tbe leaf. As shown by the census tbe average price raid for North Carolina tobacco is $14.10 per 100 pounds. Deducting $9.33, the actual cost ot pro duction here, a net profit of $4.77 is Jeft to the producer. The White Burley district in Ohio yields an average profit of only $4.30, while Pennsylvania gives $4.13, Connecticut $3.89. Wisconsin $3.53, New York $3.12, and soon down the list. This annual profit to the North Carolina farmer of more than 51 per cent, would indicate that the growing of tobacco is the most pro fitable agricultural work. I done on a large scale m America.
