An ingenious horticulturist of Phila delphia, noticing that almost eyery j hour in 1 he day some plant bloomed, has constructed on this principle a lloral clock composed of twenty-tour plaoU oce for every hour. At the top ot the clopk, at 12 o'clock, was planted the portulacca. At the hours of 1, 2 and 3 he had different varied of the same plant, each of which" bloomed at tne hour opposite to which it was planted. At 4 o'clock the common plant of that name was placed; at 5 the garden -nictago came out; at fi the gerauium triste and at 7 the evening primrose. At 8 he had the bona nox. at 9 the silence noctiflora, at 10 a cactus at 11 another kind aud at 12 the night" blooming cereus. The plants at 1 and 2 were cactus, at 3 the common satsify, at 4 the chicory, at 5 the snow thistle and at 6 the dandelion. . ,Mr. Blaine's promises, says the Her ald, are all yery well, but what will he do lor the workiogmen if the labor vote is given to him? That is precisely the question the working classes have been asking, and a conclusive answer comes from the coal miners of Pennsylvania, as will be seen in an article in another column of to-dav's Herald. Their an swer is that he will do in the luture What he has done in the past. They recall his attitude against labor when his mining interests have been affected. They relate ho he discharged all his laborers at the .mines, including the Irish whom he is now trying to fill up with windy assurances of his affection, that he might profit by tbe importation of Norwegians and Italians at sixty five cents a day. Tho Knights of Labor in Pennsylvania have been weighing Mr. Blaine in tho balance, and have found him decidedly wanting.. A New York special of Saturday says; "Tlie week closes with a rather more cheerful leeling in the 'Wholesale trade circles. In no department is the Volume of business as large as could be hoped for, and in a majority of cases, it may be said, the hand-to-mouth pol icy is still adherre'd to by buyers; but on the other hand, there are substan tial reasons for the prevalent belief wish tha best inlormed merchants that iu the co.urae ot another fortnight or so there vrill be increased activity all around. Tho advices which the job bers and commission houses haye been receiving irom the interior within the few days past would seem to be of a character to justify thit expect ationwith in reasonable limits, and it is further en cou raged by thagreatly improved as pect ot the the financial situation here.'1 Ferdinand Ward's last coup ha3 re suited in involving tho New York banks in a terrible muddle that promises to lead to internecine legal warfare of the bitterest kind. It will be remembered that the day before the suspension of Grant & Ward and the Marine Bank this prince ot financiers drew checks upon the First National Bank of New York for $212,000. although he bad but a law hundred dollars in that bank. The checks were deposited with the Mariue Bank, and when sent the next morning to the Clearing-house were credited to the Marine and charged against the First National. Very short ly afterwards the Marine closed its doors, and the First National found itself out $215,000, the Clearing-house refusing to charge back the amount to the Marine and credit it to the First National, on tho ground that "the ac counts between all the baoks had been closed." The First National now asks to be made a preferred creditor of the Marine in the distriDution of its assets. The receiver declines to recognize its claim, and says plainly that if litigation is necessary to do it the affair must be settled in that way. The Clearing-house must call on all the banks in the asso ciation with balances as?ainst the Marine on the exchanges of May 6, to pay back these debit balances against tho Marine that day, which amounted to $770,063 17. Out ot this ' the Clearing-house must pay the receiver 525,063 17, which, he cla ms, was illegally taken from the assets of the Marine Bank to make eood its jlebit balance; then the First National could have it $215,000, which would be just the sum remain ing with the Clearing-house. While this would be eminently satisfactory ?to the First National and the receiver, it will hardly bo assented to by the other banks, for it makes them unsecured creditors of tha Marine to the extent of i 4 0.063 17. The receiver is, however, in earnest, apparently, and the warfare will be mixed and mighty. . Little Specks in th sinuses of the teeth soon grow into apppalling cavities, it disregarded. The New;York Times says: "There 13 samep r6ffect that Miss Lula Hurst, who has beeu giviugfperform-ince3 in Boston daring the past ten days with largo financial results;; will Teturn to New York for the purpose of testing her power against the physical strength of certain noud athletes. Wh5le she was appearing in Boston she sent an invitation to John L.Sullivan, the prize fighter, to meet her for any reasonable sum of money, but Mr. Sullivan de clined the proposition . A strong man of New York, reading Miss Hurst's chal lenge in a Boston paper, telegraphed that he would g to the city to take Mr Sullivan's place and accept tfce' mone tary challenge offored by Miss Hurst. Her response was that she would not trouble him to come to Boston, but would come herself td New York. She added that she would coyer any deposit that might be made. These arrangements were understood to have been in progress yesterday. Should the matter come to a satisfac tory conclusion it is probable that the exhibition will be given either in the Madison Square Garden or the Acade my of Music." In Tbe Garden of Eden.
