She is quite an accomplished young lady, swims like a fish, shoots like a rifleman and rides like a Kentucky belle, in her gray Confederate uniform, trimmed with bi brass buttons. It is very pretty to see the deterence paid the widow and only child of their lost leader by all the Southern men and women who may chance to meet them. Mrs. Jackson is a modest little lady, with charming manners and sweet voice." ' Labouchere. in the London Truth, sajs: "A lady of my acquaintance recently came from America with the intention ot passing a few weeks here. Having heard ol the cholera, she de termined to lake medical advice, and paid a visit to onoofourbest-knownphy-siciatis. An investment of two guineas elicited the following observations: That the cholera might be expected in Englaud in the month of August, a3 those running away from it on the Continent would take refuge here, bringing it with them; that tne Atlantic boats would then be stopped, and that consequently, her best plan would be to go back at once to New York. On this, she took her passage and returned wheo.ee she came. As a consolation, the physician informed her that tne cholera would reach America in about a year." For year3 we have read attentively the productions of our eminent men upon public questions, and we must confess that Mr, BlaineV letter of acceptance is the most, specious paper wr have ever met. It i3 ingenious, but tame. It lacks the ring of Mr.' Blaine's previous pro ductions, and yet it i3 dextrously written. It is a shrewd, skillful pre sentation of a bad cause. It is not so much a letter of acceptance as it is a supplement to a miserably written platform. Ihe author shows unmis takably that he recognizes the fact that he has an elephant on his hands and he artfully endeavors to make it sacred by a liberal and deft application ol parti fan white-wash. Mr. Blaine is won derfully giited with the unique ability to making liction appear as facts. Ol all our public men he is yar excellence the political sophist. The letter i3 cal culated to deceive the unskillful, but when it is subjected to the crucial- test of cold nitiles - r. tacts it will succumb beneath th r.r" leal. Mr. Blaine's great hope lies in the fact that human nature, for some unaccouutable reason, i3 ever ready to "believe a lie and be damned." or, as showman Barnum pithily puts it, 4,the American people loye to bo humbu- ged." It is strange how blissfully ignor ant we sometimes are. In the simplic ity of our hearts we had innocently be lieved that we were singing 4with the spirit and the understanding," when we sang "Praise God from whom all blessings flow," but to our amazement the Republican party, with High Tariff has been the source of all our inestima ble blessings, not excepting the crimes and venalities which have so disgraced our eoun.ry tor a quarter ot a century. After the second ot November Jimmie B. and Johnnie L? might start out on au evangelical tour. They could doubt less engage the services ot Keifer, Secor Robeson, Billie Chandler, Belknap, et iu omni genus, and as a fnll- fiedged Salvation Army go lorth conquering and to conquer. We would suggest as a suitable, ensign to flaunt to the breezes a bloody shirt on the tail of which there might be imprinted a case of burglar tools with the words In Iioc signo vinces inscribed thereon. in enunciating the various achieve ments of the grand old party we were a little surprised that Mr. Blaine did not insist that the new version of the Bible was the direct fruit of Republi Ann -.,., 1 1 lir . ,au ouj;ci-CAu;i;uce. Y 6 naV6 - nO doubt that an expurgated edition -of that work, that would do away with very undesirable hereafter, would be very gratifying to a number of the r" ligious statesman ol the G. O. P. whose cupidity has been; greater than their conscience. We really do not know how to account for the insipidity, ex cept mat J immie get cousin Gail to "indite the epistle" tor him, ; As a work ot fictiou it is a decided success, and will place Mr. Blaine in the front rank as a joker and a writer of unadulterated fictiou.
