Who knows how long tho famous dram tree in our river has stood in its present position? A gentleman of whom we asked the question a few days since and who is one of the oldest inhabitants of the city, says that he can recollect as far back as 70 years ago when it presented precisely the same aspect as St does to-day. The same gentleman tells us that during the war of 1812 he accompanied , his father jvho was a commissary in that war, on a trip to Smithville, where he went to' settle some accounts and that, making the trip in a sloop they passed to the West of Big Island, near the mainland on ifie Brunswick side of the river, which was then the main channel oi the river whereas now it is East of Big plaud it is probable that at one time Big Is andwas connected with the main land on the East by a cypress swamp, as witness the huge stump3 taken up from the chaunel of the river a few years ago by the Government dredges. . During the shower yesterday after noon the lightning struck and shivered the main truck of the Ger. barque Texas, besides taking off a small splinter from the head of the mast to which tte truck was attached. No other damage was done. ";Tr .; -; . Sheriff Taylor, of Brunswick county, tells us that since his letter to us on the 3d inst, there have been more heavy rains and that ; there is more water nor in Town- Creek - thanrhas been the case since 1880. The crops, he says, and .particularly cotton, are nearly ruined. . k Installation of Officers. The following officers of Harmony Lodge No. 19, Independent Order of Good.
