AUGUST 23. 1884. jiwtS at tbe HostofHce ju Wilmington. K. C u Becocd-cl&M matter. THE JLKO S P ECTS. In looking over the political field we see everything bright and cheering for Democratic prospects, notwithstanding the doJelul mouths of the croakexs. The total e ectoral vote will be 401 votes and necessary to a choice 201 vote3. In our estimate the Democrats can hardiy fail of having considerably more than that number. We think we are entirely safe in claiming Ala: tama, 10 votes; Arkansas. 7vbtes;Cal- ifoni'a, 8 votes: Delaware, 3 votes; Florida, 4 votes; Georgia, 12 votes; Indiana, 15 votes; Kentucky; 13 votes; Louisiana, 8 votea; Mary'and, 8 votes; Mississippi, 9 votes; Illinois, 16 votes; Nevada, 3 votes; New Jersey,!) votes; New Yoik, 37 votes; North Carolina, 11 votes; South Carolina, 9 votes; Tennessee, 12vote3; Texas, 13 votes; Virginia, 12 votes; and West Virginia, G votes; making a total ol 234 votes, or 23 more than are absolutely necessary. Ofithe above States all gave Demo cratic majorities in 1880, save Califor nia and Indiana, which gave Demo cratic pluralities; New Jersey, which gave a Republican plurality, and New York, which gave a Republican ma" jority. In the election of 1882 both New Jersey and New York gave Dem ocratic majorities, the latter to the tune ol nearly 200,000. It i3 claim ed by the croakers that the overwhelming majority in New York that year was largely due to tbe votes of dissatisfied Republicans, a fact which' we cheerfnlly admit. It is a source of gratification and a sure lntrbinger of victory for us to know that the same deep-seated dissatisfaction exists in the Republican ranks at the present time, and that Cleveland will pofl as many Republican votes at the approaching election as he did in 1882, is certain beyond the shadow of a doubt. The indications are to hi receiring more votes from that source than he did when he was elected Governor. But the croakers say that Tammany is opposed to Cleveland. This is but partially true. John Kelly is dissatisGed and with him, as a matter of c 'Urse, some ot his adherents; bul there are a great many in that organi zation who have avowed their intention to work and vote for Cleveland and are proving their sincerity by their acts and words. A friend and a sterling democrat has sjggesied that of the States we have claimed for Cleveland, it is possible, on account of the great number of Northerner- who have migrated thither, that Florida with its four votes may be carried for Blaine. Of this we have no fears, ahd the Republieans have not even laid a claim to that State. Of the number we have mentioned there is but one State of which we have any doubt, and tnat is California, where Blaine is popular on account of his position on the Chinese question. Conce ding the eight votes of Cali fornia to the Republicans and there re mains 2IG vote3 in the Electoral College for Cleveland, which is 15 votes more thau would be absolutely needed. The Review is a Democratic paper. It earnestly believes in the justness, beneficence and patriotism of Demo cratic principles as applied to the needs of our people, and hence it will work zealously and faithfully with the might at its command to maintain and ad vance the best interests ot the Demo cratic party. While the Review is not unmindful of the struggle now just begua nor tbe desperate attempts which the Republicans are making iu order .to retain their hold of power, it sees nothing to excite alarm or despon dency. There are thousands of vague and. many of them senseless, rumors pervading the political atmosphere with which the Review will , have nothing to do, because they are of no value as showing tbe true situation of affairs, can do do possible good and might possibly do much harm. We have claimed the States named for the Democracy after a careful scru tiny of the political outlook, basing our calculations partly upon results con ceded by the Republicans, partly upon the unfaltering devotion to the party of several of the States named, partly. from the results of the last elections and partly from reliable information glean' ed from responsible sources. We have every faith in the result and expect to cast a vote for the next President of these United States in the person ot Grover Cleveland, of New York. Late Geroian papery dwell upon a new and novel feature in the emigra tion movement which the Berlin Taqe- llatl calls the ;exportation of a genuine aristocracy." The National Zietung shows that tho movement has been originated by the extensive club 4No- bilitas.l which desires to obtain an qutlet for superfluous society men. The club has been in treaty with the gov ernment of Chile to provide 'secure positions for 'number bt younger mods of noole families. A dozen of these have already been forwarded at its expense to Liverpool, whence, ac cording to the reports, the Chilian gov eminent agrees to take charge of their transportation to South America. It is expected that these high-bred youths will be advanced to high posts' in tbe army of Chile. It is said that the goy ernment has promised them considera ble tracts of land upon which in time ot peace they can live in the traditional style of the German Junker. Altogeth er, if these plans are carried out. they will know few of the pains ot emigra tion. A company has been formed to establish a New England colony in tbe Highlands of Florida, at Belleview, in Marion county. It is desired to form a model town which shall combine natural, social and religious advantages with freedom from intemperance and -pauperism, lue deeds to lands will be given with the provisos that no intoxi' eating liquors shall be sold and that no dwelling shall be built at an expense of less than $500. A school of twenty-five pupils is how in operation, a good hotel is being built and a church edi-c3 and an academy are to follow. . ' With Intent to Dcceiye." " The latest caper in-society is to stamp or seal a letter where wax is used by the use of the thumb. A voting merchnnt. who had a few thousand dollars to spare, called upon a college friend who was a broKer in V all street "What do you advise me to do?" he asked. "I'll tell you.
