of late marked the tone of the London

think of the Cleveland scandal?"
" Why," said he, 'it is only a proof of
the degradation to which the Republi

disreputable element of assault on the
character of a public man." "Do you
think it will hurt Cleveland's chances?"
'On the contrary, I think it will have

There are a great many such things.
One is, that, there is no use haviDg dys

We hope to see a large crowd in at
tendance upon the Lawn Party at the
City Hall to-night. The purpose for
which it is given is a most worthy one
and cannot fail, to meet the approbation
of every person within whose' bosom
glows the ennobling spirit of patriot
ism. We ought to account it a sweet
privilege to aid the needy . veterans of
the knightliest soldiery that ever struck
for freedom. For us they suffered and
by their fortitude and courage they
taught the world what brave, honorable
men can and will do in behalf of what
they believe to be right. We trust that
someTot the spirit of 'CO still lives and
that old North Carolina, the cradle of
American liberty, may not be remiss
in this great duty she owes to the brave
men who, by their valor and their sac
rifice, wrought the brightest pages ot
her history.
Cautionary.
We believe that the officers having
charge of the sanitary condition ot the
city are doing faithful and efficient
work for the prevention of disease, but
a few words of caution may not be out
of place. We are close upon the month
of September ne of the sickliest of tho
yearwhen decaying vegetation under
ihe influence of the frequent rains and
the heat of the sun's rays, will be con
stantly throwing its poisons into the
atmosphere to carry sickness and
possibly death to humanity. -Heat,
moisture and vegetable decomposition
are the great evils with which we have
to contened until the frosts of the latter
part ofOctober set in, and to . guard
aeainst these our efforts Should be
directed. All decaying vegetable matter
should be at once removed or buried
and all premises should bo thoroughly
and frequently disinfected. Heads of
families should cheerfully assist in this
important work, and should be watch
ful that ho indolent or careless servants
should permit any accumulation of filth
or garbage The city i3 remarkably
healthy now, and wo doubt not that
with proper vigilance and care it wil
remain so. ' !!

Onslow Items
From a friend and subscriber at
Sneed's Ferry.Onslow county, we learn
that the farmers of that section have
nearly finished fodder pulling, and thus
far they have had excellent Weather for
curing it., Mr. J. Yopp has raised a
watermelon which weighed 55 pounds;
Mr. D. R. Canady has pears which turn
the scales at 20 ounces, while Mr. C.
McClammy can boast of beets which
weigh two pounds. Messrs. J. Capps
& Co., turn out on an average 7,000
bricks per day at their brickyard.
There is some sickness of a malarial
nature but no serious re
sults are anticipated. The mumps
are also quite prevalent, cansing'a good
miny of the pupils to remain away
from the schools. Mr. J. F. Giles, the
Democratic nominee for the office of
Register of Deeds, is teaching school
at Stone's Bay., but will closo in season
to take the stump during the canvass.
Mullets arc getting to be plentiful,
and oysters will be in the course of a
few more days.
A railroad is badly needed, and the
people are anxious to hear the shrill :
whistle of the locomotive. The need
of better facilities of travel to and com
munication with this city js shown by
the fact that goods from here, some
time since, were more than three weeks
in getting to Sneed's Ferry. ...
