THE TWO OUTSIDE MOVE MENTS. There i3 an important distinction, says the New York World between the Prohibition movement which has put ex-Goy. St. John, of Kansas, in fio&i nation tor President, and the so-called Anti-Monopoly movement which has nominated Benjamin F. Butler. The Prohibitionists contend for what they regard as a great moral reform whiduhey sioceiely, if erroneously, believe to be essential to the public good and to the happiness of the people Neither of the political organizations is a faithful advocato of this reform. Democracy is in open opposition to it as inconsistent with the individual rigbt3 of citizens .Republicanism has been its friend wherever intolerance could be practised with impunity, but has been ready at all times to sacrifice Prohibition to political expediency. Hence the earnest and true champions ot Prohibition can only hope to advance their cause by making their power felt so that the .Republican party, their natural but faithless ally, may be com pelled to respect them in the future. The so-called "Anti-Monopolists" pretend'to uphold a principle which, is one of the articles of Democratic faith and to which the Democracy has al ways been true. If sincere in their professed desire to check the growing power of Monopoly and to project the people from the aggressions of aggre gated capital, they would by all the means at their command aid to elect Grover Cleveland President. By sup porting Butler, a candidate who is in fact a Monopolist in disguise, they do thtir best to defeat Cleveland and to assist the Republicans, the creators of Monopoly, to retain thfc power they have used in-iiostility to the rights and privileges of the people for ntarly a quarter of a century. The Prohibitionists by independent action prove ther fidelity to the princi ple they profess. The so-called Anti-Monopolists by independent action betray the cause they pretend to uphold. Ex-Gov. St. John, the Prohibition candidate, in his acceptance of the nomination, thus forcibly sets forth the issue involved in his campaign : The Prohibition party was not or ganized as a mere threat or menace. It is the ouigrowth of a rapidly increasing crysialized sentiment against the great evil olthe age an cyil that the old parties llared not attack, but against which tais young party ot the people. in defense ot the homes of the nation. has enterted upon a warfare that shall never cease so long as the flag of our couutry waves its protecting folds over legalized dramshops, In this struggle let us ever remember that we are .ac countable to God , that our duty to him is paramount to our allegiance to any political party ; that political tie3 will never in his sight excuse a ballot for any party that does not stand up fear lessly for the right. How different is the justification of fered for the candidacy of Ben Butler! The managers and organs of the move ment object to Governor Cleveland. In two years of service as Governor he has vetoed three or four bills which they think he ought to have sighed, and has made one or two appointments which do rot suit them. On this ac count they ask tho workingmeu ot the country to throw away their good votes on a blatant demagogue and fraud to keep the Democratic party, the work ingman's true friend out of power and to extend the twenty-four years' lease of the Republican party, which has built up all the existing monopolies, fostered a dangerous centralization of power, trampled down the rights of the people showered undue favors on Capi tal and left Labor in its present suffer ing: condition. it would bring,' Walker assuming the name of the dead captain. ThU career of plunder was cut short by the sudden disappearance of Gomez at Inagua wt.h the available cash, whereupon Walker directed the vessel to Key West. There he was arrested, his story having pre ceded him', and was put in jail; and now Gomez, on attempting to return t- New York, has suffered the same fate. Half a century ago this plot might have founded a prolonged free booting expedition in the Spanish Main; but stealing and selling piecemeal a ship's cargo is no easy matter. . s - Th attack uDon Governor Cleve land's private character, undertaken by desperate Republicans, has failed to di3tract attention from Mr. Blaine's corrupt public record. Cleve land will survive and live down and triumph over a personal misfortune long atoned for. Blaine can never lay the ghost of Mulligan. Day by day, he is confronted with the damning evi dence, and his campaign orators make a poor show of defending him. Carl Schurz and the Democratic press are keeping the public gaze fixed upon the main issues of the canvass, and demon strating that Mr. Blaine not only made merchandise of his office as Speaker, but that he perfidiously read in the House only 15 of the 19 letters he promis ed to make public.omitting d-libcrately the most damaging missives. He add ed mendacity to corruption, and so convinced in 187C was Murat Ilalstead ot the fact that he then advised him to withdraw from Presidetrtaspirations and "study the history of Armias and Sapphira." Mulligan still lives. ' He is not dead, as reported and as the Re publicans fondly hoped. He will be heard from in time, and need not come Irom the grave, like Banquo, to testify. So, as some, of the Democratic papers advise, Blaine had better withdraw rather than be overwhelmed at the polls. He will, in Halstead's old lan; guage, "retreat to the tune of the Mul ligan Guards." From the lacts as they are known, it seems clear that thi$ vessel was practically stolen by Walker, the mate, and iiomez. me siewara. ino only re maining doubt is whether Lewis, the captain, was murdered, as a prelimin ary step. It is at least a suggestive discovery that when Lewis had applied to a shipping agent in New York for a crew, Walker and Gomez.oflered them selves, and paid a large extra fee for being allowed to go together as mate and steward, and then recommended to the agent from their boarding bouse all the seamen needed for tho rest of the company. Lewis urged the agent to furnish another mate, saying that, he did not like the looks of Walker? but there was no time to make a change. It is shown that Lbwi who had been ill, died several days after leaving port, expiring almost immediately after re ceiving a potion from Walker and Gomez.
