C. SATURD4Y, SEPTEMBER 6, 1884 tCctered at the Postoffice at Wilmington, N. C, as second-class matter. The war of word3 between .Faris and London is decidedly diverting. The liepublique Francaisc. says: "We have had some fine specimens of Brit, ish hypocrisy before, but thee la mentations of the city of Jeremiahs about the Foo-Chow victory throw everything else in the shade. It is not in vain that our neighbors have linger ed so long in the land ot crocodiles." Le Paris thinks that not only China but England has been vanquished on the waters of the Min, and La Nou velle Press is aoved to say : "To Eng land alone belongs the honor of bom barding defenceless towns." The Eng lish press is more guarded, but the Telegraph says : ' If a passiog tiff with the friends of nearly three-quarters of a century may make our neighbor for get even for a week the memories of Sedan and Lorraine, then we must cease to treat seriously the whispers c f eventful revenge which run through so much French politics." The Salur day Review would be a little sarcastic when it says: "If jubilation in the Dapers seems excessive, someting must be allowed for the natural suprise of Frenchmen. who find themselves doing anything at all afloat, even on a river." The Vermont election, says the World, has a significance beyond thai, found in the largely decreased Republi can majorhy In the State. The falling off niight be attributed by Blaine man agers to the reduced vote or to local causes which would not appear in the November election. But the charac ter of the Republican decline indicates that it is directly attributable to the Presidential nomination, and that the re volution against a tained and in proper candidate which is pending all over the Unitqd States is felt even in the most impregnable fortress of the party. The total vote of the State in 1680 was 65.000 in round number, and in 1872 was 52,000. Taking an average in crease of G.000 in each Presidential year and giving 4 ,000 of this to the Republi cans, the majority which was, pay. 26, 000 in 18S0 ought to have been 27.000 this year. Where was the principal falling off? Senator Edmunds resides in Chittenden county, where he is very popular Out of a total vote of 6,000 in the county in 1880 the Republicans had a majority of 2.000. Last Tuesday this majority was wiped out and the county elected a Democratic Sheriff for the fir si lime in over thirty years. The city,of Burling ton, where Senator Edmunds's home is located, elected a Democrat to the Leg islature, according to the Tribune re port, by "the largest Democratic ma jority ever cast here." Col. George W. Hooker, the Secretary of the Blaine National Committee, re. sides at Brattleboro, Windham Couuty. It is a Republican stronghold! and Col. Hooker has heretofore been "boss" of its political machine. He boasts of carrying 1 he county iu his pocket. In 1880 Windham County, out of a vote of a little oyer 6,000, gave a Republican majority of 3,200. But th re are a great many Independent Republicans in the county, and last Tuesday the gallant Col. George W. Hooker, who accepted a nomination at his home for Town Representative, "just to help the party, you vknow," was ingloriously defeated and his Democratic competitor was successful, being the first Demo crat ever e'ected there. Surely these results are significant of a general uprising against the tainted candidate in the ranks of his own party, and of the determination of the silent vote of the country to change the power of the National Government. The home of Senator Edmunds rebukes the recklessness which forced Blaine on the party by the strength of Star-route money and yeHs. The home of Secre tary Blaine's National Committee puts the stamp of disapprobation on one the principal managers of the Blaine campa gn. Yhere will the next blow fall? In view of the fracas between Cameron and Mahone and the divided condition of the Republican party in Virginia, ail talk of carrying the Old Dominion for Blaine has ceased. Chairman Elweli, of the Democratic committee of Nevada, in a letter to a Democrat at Washington City, says Cleveland will carry that State by a small majority, and that Cass id y, lor Congress, will beat any man the Re publicans put against him. He also added that his advices from Calfoniia were most satisfactory. He wrote that in California there are more Democratic clubs that ever before, and that the -Democrats are counting upon from 10,- 000 to 15.000 majority. - The Washington. Star says ; that Mr.4 S. Prentiss Nutt has just retained from a trip to Ohio and West Virginia. He says that in Ohio the Democratic party is thoroughly united and fcanaoDicn?. tt tci Pcr.iv-!cb, Hc-dly rrvi Thr man fACtions are all working in accord, and the party is better organized than in any previous campaign, "I saw Gen. Denver in Ohio," he added, "and he assured me that there is every reason to believe that the Democrats will carry the Stale. He said that Newman, the Democratic candidate for secretary of State, who is the present incumbent has made a splendid officer and is much more popular personally than Robinson, h;.s Republican opponent." . . . Decoratlou of Dinner Tables. Th ladies vie with each other in try ing to make a table artistically elegant. Chinese lanterns, Japanese umbrellas, velvet.table cloths, and subdued green and pink napkins are nice in their way. But decorate our table with a fifteen pound turkey or a royal ribroast of beef with trimmings, and thea let us have a good appetite to enjoy ft. It your appetite is slack and your digestion poor, you need Brown's .Iron Bitters, the best tonic in the world. Mrs. J. Durham, Muscatine, Iowa, was troubl ed with weakness and loss of appetite.
