The following, which we clip from

exactly and as such has out warm
endorsement :-
The Wilmington. Columbia! and
Augusta Railroad, part of the Atlantic
Coast Line, is certainly in a fine con
dition. Tne road bed has beer ereatlv
mproved and the work Jn that direc
tion still goes on. For convenience.
comtort. quicK and safe travel, polite
and attentiue conductors, and general
management the road will not tall be
hind any other. It is well officered by
men whose thorough and practical
knowledge peculiarly fits them for lha
positions they occupy. Tho authorities
are to be congratulated on their success.
A Wilmington Boy.
We are gratified to learn that
our former citizen, Mr. Frank Mj Fre

ago in the service of the Pitch Pine
Manufacturing Co., of Savannah, is
now located in the ''Gate City." Atlan
ta, Ga., where he is agent in charge of
he Gate City Planing Mills and Lum:
ber Company, now owned by Messrs.
D.C. Bacon & Co., of Savannah, which
s said to be the largest lumber concern
in the State of Georgia. Blood, I and
Wilmington blood especially, will tell
in the long run.
Republican Convention.
The Republicans of Pender county
met in Convention at.the Court House
at Burgaw yesterday, and the meeting
was called to order by A. V. Horrell,
Chairman of the County Executive
Committee. The regular committees
were appointed and Mr. Horrell! was
made permanent Chairman.
A county ticket was then nominated.
as follow:

Coroner S. B. Costin.
Surveyor C. M. Taylor.
The Convention endorsed E. M.

Tlio Cornet Club.
We see by the Wednesday evening
edition of the News and Observer, that
the bands at the Exposition, among
which the band of-Wilmington was
mentioned, were very fine, and that
their appearance was noticeable, j As
the band (the Cornet Concert Club) of
thisr city did not attend, there must have
been some mistake.
In this connection it is proper to state
what should have been said before
that the music lurnished by the Club
for the torchlight procession and parade
on Wednesday night was very fine
The members have made decided pro
ficiency within the last few 'months,
and are determined to maintain their
position as the best musical organiza
tion in the Statsv They have secured
several new instruments, among which
is a splendid snare (noi kettle), drum
Other instruments have been thorough

Death of Mr. Osborn.
Mr. Minott E. Osborn, one of Jhe
largest stockholders in the New Hav
en (Conn..) Reqisier, and a gentleman
quite well known in this city, - died at
hia home in New Haven on the 1st
inst., aged 42 years. Mr., Osborn has
passed several Winters in this city
and it was during his visit here las
7ear that we had the good fortune to
form his acquaintance. He was a gen
tleman of rare attainments, affable and
courteous In his association, with others
with excellent conversational powers
and a genial, kindly manner which en
deared him to all. He bad been m
failing health for several yean?,-but his
final and iatal attack was paralysis o
the brain. He leaves a wife and three
children, besides a host - of friends to
sorrow at his death. In the full prime
of man hoed and in a career of. grea
influence and usefulness the dread
summons came and he had to obey the
mandate. ;'- ::.

A Curious Tree.
Mr. W. W. Shepherd brought to our
office this morning a rare and beautiful
curiosity. It was a twig taken. from a
Chinaberry tree, the leaves of which
were of a Very light and bright straw
color. It came from Still Bluff, on
Black river, in Pender cbuntv. where
he tree grew and when it now is, in a
flourishing condition, with all its
eaves and berries of the same bright
olor we have described. The ; tree is
hrifty and is now about 18 inches in
diameter in its largest part, and, what
is remarkably singular, its annual
growth of leaves and fruitage has al
ways been of the color. In all other
respects the tree is entirely normal.
