Friends of country, liberty and the bl.:ing3 of a good government, hon estly and economically administered, we are safe if we but do our duty man iully anil faithfully during tbe remain der of the campaign! The news from every quarter is of the most cheering and gratifying character. Every pros pect is bright and hopeful. In West Virginia, jibe videtie post of the Southern Democracy, the hardy moun taincers have done a noble work. Not withstanding the fact that the State has been overrun with Republican speakers and beeu freely supplied with Republi can money, she has proven true to herself and to the cause of good gov ernment by tolling an a Democratic majority of nearly or quite 10.000 votes. From Ohio the news is not less cheering It was in that State that the great bat tle was waged. To maintain their van tage ground there in the October elec tion has been the superhuman effort of the Republicans, well knowing, as their great chief and standard-bearer fre quently stated that, a majority of less than 20,000 in that State would be useless in other States. This they have failed to do, although more than $ 1.000,000 have been lavished A. I t . . mere in ana me nest speakers in the 'country, including both of their standard bearers, have shouted them selves hoarse in their importunate ap peals to the passions, prejudices and 1 - 0 a cupiauy oi men. An army oi govern ment officials, led by Commissioner of Pensions, Dudley, have been canvassing the. State for weeks, yet .they have se cured the State by only about 8,000 majority. This in face of the fact that it has always been Republican by ma jorities raaging from 20.000 to 30,000 votes. Both parlies have worked earn estly and faithfully in that State, the Democrats in hope of a return to a purer and better administration of the government, and the Republicans in a death struggle to maintain the suprem acy which they have so long held. Any majority less than 15,000 was a Republican defeat and any majority less than 10,000 was a Democratic vic tory. The newa, regarding the election, as it was at first flashed over the wires, was not cheering. On the con trary, it was depressing. Bat when more authentic nndk reliable informa tion began to bo received, and the boasted Republican majorities of 20 - 000 and 25.000 vates began to melt be fore the genial sunshine of truth there was immediately a corresponding re action and the true and earnest Demo cratic pulse of North Carolina and in fact of the entire country begun to cat with gleeful joy at the welcome in telligence. The same newa lias had a correspondingly depressing Influence upon the Republican?, and the intelli gent portion o f that, party thron shout forlorn hope to grapple with They will work, 'with the energy of despair and will use every strategy known or to be conceived of io political chicanery to avert the dreaded disaster, bat the handwriting is on the wall and their doom i3 sealed if the Democracy only prove true to themselves, to their duty and to their country. , 'Tarn the ras cals out!" . .'- The Charleston News fc ' Courier, one of tberbest . and most progressive newspapers in the entire South, has the following to say of the political prospect in North Carolina: The accounts from North- Carolina are highly encouraging Those Demo cratic tar-heels stick without glue. The State is safe for Cleveland and Hend ricks. True, every word of it, and it might also have said with equal truthfulness that North Carolina is also just as cer tain for the State ticket as it is to give its electoral vote for Cleveland and Hendricks. A "Women's Exchange." The sight was displayed, and somebody went in to see if a man who was tired of his wife could go there and trade her off tor another one. Found it was impracticable. The best kind of ex change lor women is that which is pro moted by Brown's Iron Bitters, i Ex change poor health for good. Broken down and debiliated ladies with im poverised blood find vigor and joy in the enrichment which this prince of tonics bestows on them. OCTOBER ODDS. A bootblack who went West after accumulating a comfortable sum of money always refers with pleasure to his metropoliabing career. In the war between France- and China let us not forget the poor slais. For "poor slain" read ''porcelain,'? and there you are. We hate to be compell ed to explain a joke. In the spring the trees leave, ahd in the fall the leaves leave. In the winter the snow flies, and in the summer the tlyMlies. In the but a little of this goe3 a long way. Miss Ionfte Alcott believes that wo men can fill any office from the Presi dential chair lo a washtub. They can, certainly, but when it comes to filling washtub the old man is generally called upon. It is said that Mrs. Belva Lockwood gets very indignant when she comes home after a hard day's electioneering and discovers no fire in the kicthen stove, and her husband leaning aver he back fenco gos9ipping with a neigh bor. A Philadelphia truck driver by the name of Fianigan by strict attention to business has amassed a fortune and occupies a very handsome residence in a fashionable quarter of the city. Mrs. FlanaAgen is at home" on Thursdays. A. 'Card.
