JAMES, Editor & Prop. WILMINGTON. N. C. Monday. November 10. 1884. , . - Entered at the Postofice at Wilmington, N. C. as Becond-class matter. John Hill, ot New Brunswick, N. J., has determined to pay off some of the debt3 left by.his brother, Charles H. Hill, the late cashier ot the Nationa1 Bank. He has sold his horses and car. riages, dismissed many of his servants, and is economizing in every way to en able him to repair the breach of trust that fell so heavily upon Ihe poor cred itors cf his brother. It is stated that one his daughters will teach music so as to assist her father. Hercatter in France, when a number of stamps are to be affixed on a ietter tbey must not be placed close together but with space between them. The reason given for this is that if & con siderable portion of the envelope is covered with stamps it is easy lor a dishonest person to remove them, open the envelope under them, abstract the eontents of the letter, and raste them on again without being discovered. It is said that a great many bauk notes have been stolen out of letters in thi3 way. Ooe of the most notable of the many interesting objects in Prince Bismarck's castle at Friedrichsruhe is a large bronze cast of the Niederwaltl "Ger mania" monument, which stands on an oak cabinet in the smoking-room, and to which is attached a sheet of no e paper, bearing these lines in the Emperor's own hand: ,4Christmas) 1883. The keystone of your policy: a ceremony which was chieily dedicated lo you, and at which you could, I am sorry to say, not be present. W." Capt. Kostowitz, the Russian aero naut, is quite confident that he has solved the problem of steering a balloon which is being constructed at St. Pe tersburg. It is of the shape of a huge cigar, driven by a screw, but it is also provided with sails. The inventor cal culates that his air-ship will be able to make 100 miles an hour with an equip age of 16 men, 10,000 pounds ballast and an engine of 50 horse power. J he whole balloon, with its appurtenances, will be 800 feet long and 80 leet high, and will probbly make its first excur sion from St. Petersburg in a few weeks. An experiment whose results will be interesting to the people of every olher large city is now in progress in Chica go. It consists of an attempt to pre vent business men from evading jury service by taking away from it some of its, btrdensomeness. Men who are mo3t ready to denounce other violations of public and private duty find it easy to reconcile their consciencos to the use of petty trickery and even actual dis honesty to the end that they may not have to attend court when their own special interests are not in litigation. Their plea is that during the time of jury service they cannot look after business at all, and that it is too much to expect men with impor tant personal matters on their hands to drop them suddenly at the call ot the public and risk pecuniary losses through inability to care for them. To over come the force ot this plea, by taking jurors away from business only half a day at a time, the civil courts of Chicago now confine jury trials to the altornoon, beginning at one o'clock. The new system is said to have already resulted in an evident improvement in the general intelligence of the juries. Press Comments. (Jfewa and Courier.) Grover Cleveland will be the next President of the United States! This means that the States ot the American Republic are, in truth, reunited. It means that the war is really over, at last. It means, for North and South, alike v . "Peace in all our hearts, . Peace in all our homes.7 f It means more than this. There will be in the South, for the first time in twenty years, a sense of absolute se curitysecurity from political plots and stratagems, security from agitation and rnjsrule. security from i Govern mental conspiracies against the in dustrial wellare and social life of the people. There will co longer be any incentive lo send the pavings of the South to the North or West for invest ment Here; at home, every dollar will find, in the phrase ot the day. various channels in which it can be useful. And the confidence of the Southern people in themselves and in their iuture will attract to Dixie's land the hardy sons of the North who now 1 in their migrations seek the bleak and uninviting West. Ths value to the South of the election of one who will, in fact as well as word, ba President of the whole people, can not be measured in silver and gold. These could not purchase the content ment and satisfaction which the South will now enjoy The old lino which divided, the North from the South is bidden by a myriad of ballots.. The 1 more perfect union which war ould not ensure is given to these United States by the silent votes of the whole American people. It is a blessed thing to think of. A vista ot plenteous; ness and prosperity opens before us. With the United' States, hereafter, as with the patriots at Rulli, tie world shall be: "All lor one; one for all." This is what' the election on Tuesday accomplished,, and, when the sober second-thought shall come, this will be acknowledged by none more cheerfully than by those who, from a mistaken sense of duty," supported, with reluctance, the willing representatives of discord and sectional strife. (Norfolk Virginian.) With righteous indignation the true men ot the Republican party who loved their country above party fealty, re belled against the action of their party managers, and putting aside their par tnership they united with the National Democracy in supporting for the office ot President, Grover Cleveland, the great Reform Governor of New York, and for Vice President. Thomas ' A. Hendricks, the honest and welt-loved citizen of Indiana. Hence it is that the election of Cleveland and Hendricks can only be looked upon as a victory of the people irrespective of party, and as such wo announce it- It is a glorious result and the tidings of rejoicing which is heard Irom all parts of this country give but' expression to the heart U it thanksgiving of a people who feel that in the deleat ot Blaine a-d Logan they have escaped from the rule ct a corrupt ring ot jobbers, whose continuance in power would have led to the destiuetion of the Republic. The people havegaiued indeed a great vic tory, and well may they rejoice. . Itching Piies-.symptoms and Care.
