Cotton advanced yesterday and again to-day. last sales reported being at 10 3-1G per middling. About the last of our clerical visitors have left us and there is a big calm everywhere to-day. The cold wave has passed by. There was a heavy fro3t this morning, but as the day advanced it became warm and pleasant as October. The only business for the Mayor's consideration this morning was the case of two colored boys who were arrested last night for disorderly conduct in front of the Commercial Hotel. They were discharged Our country friends are again ad vised to hold on to their beef cattle a little longer, Our maiket 13 well applied now and prices are therefore low. It will pay you to hold back for a few weeks. It is said that there is a large accumu lation of freight in the interior waiting for water in the rivers and their tribu taries to Goat it to Wilmington. Heavy rains in the interior is what we need now. Gus Williams, who will appear at the Opera House in this city on the 10th inst., is one of the best German character comedians in the country. He is always sure of a crowded house wherever he puts in an appearance. A meeting of citizens will be held at the Produce Exchange on Monday next, 8th inst. to receive the surveys made by engineers of the proposed railroad to Onslow and to Fayettevillc. A full attendance is confidently effect ed. A .New Engine. The Howard Relief Fire Engine Co., have engaged a new engine which is to be finished and will arrive here by the 20th cf next month, which is the anniversary of their organization The engine now in use ha3 been doing - valuable service for 13 years and, although net worn out. it has been found advisable to obtain a new one. The new engine will be similar in style and will be built by the same firm as that now in use. It will weigh ahout 2.600 pounds and will be a first class machine in every respect and will be long to a first class company. - m Personal. Dr. W. T. Ennet, of Burgaw, Pen: der county, was in the city to day. Mr. Thomas W. Strange, after an absence of about ten days on a trip to the North, arrived here Tuesday morn ing. During his absence he made a flying visit to Albany, where he had the plasure of meeting with President elect, Cleveland. Mr. Strange was an earnest advocate of Mr. Cleveland's nomination for the Presidency at the National Convention and worked faith fully to secure his election after he was nominated, and that having been ac complisbed he had a strong desire to see the man for whom his labor and vote bad been given. Mr. Strange re turns with very pleasant memories of his short .interview with the President-elect. In the course of tho conversation President Cleveland stated that he desired to visit the South, and would do so be fore Ion j, if he could. The President spoke of the great importance to the country of the election, and stated it would probably give the Dem ocracy a lease ot power for many years. Mr Strange, while absent, saw and heaad Mesdames Patti and Nevadat and Mr. Henry Irving. D. C, on !hcr10th instant I . A Stranger Arrested. , Yesterday -afternoon Chief of Police Broyk receired a teTSgrani from Toron to, Canada, requesting that, it George E. Wingate should stop in the city, to arrest him, and also giving a descrip tion of the man. Yesterday morning a stranger arrived in the city" and regis tered at the Purcell House as "A. N. Dodd, Toronto, Canada," and he tallied so well with tho description given of Wingate that Capt. Brock caused him to be arrested last night, and immedi ately telegraphed toj Toronto of the fact and asked for instruction. Dodd also sent a telegram last night to which he received a reply this morning the contents of which are known only to himself. The charge upon which he was arrested was the embez ziement of $0,430 from the North Brit ish Investment Company. Dodd took his arrest quite composedly and rather made light of the affair, stating to the oflicars that it would be all right. Capt. Brock received a dispatch from the Chief of Police of Toronto this orenoon stating that Dcdu wa3 not the man wanted and, consequently, he was discharged. The Electoral College. Maj. Charles W. McClammy re turned this morning from Raleigh, where he had been in attendance upon the Electoral College of North Carolina, which assembled in the Senate cham ber of the capitol yesterday and cast its eleven votes for Grover Cleveland lor President, and for Thomas A. Hend ricks for Vice President. Major Mc Clammy had the honor of 'calling the College to order. Speeches were'made by nearly all the electors and ihe scene was impressive. The ballots for Pres ident and Vice President were of red and white North Carolina silk, wove in New Jersey, the birthplace of the President-elect. Upon one was printed "For President, Grover Cleveland, of New York;" while upon the other was printed "For Vice President, Thomas A. Hendricks, of Indiana." A'vote of each kind was sent to the President and Vice President-elect. The Raleigh Chronicle says of the electors: The Senate Chamber was filled with distinguished gentlemen at noon to witnesss the interesting ceremoney of casting the electoral votes ot the State for Cleveland and Hendricks; and there were ladies in the gallery. Among the spectators were: Mr. James S, Battle, Rocky Mount; Mr. John A. Barringer, Greensboro; Colonel Thomas M. Holt. Haw River; Dr. T. E. Skinner, Gea. R. S. Hoke, W. F, Green, Frank lin; Mr. P. C. Cameron, Hillsboro; Col. W. H, S. Burgwyn, Henderson; Mr. Thos. Dixocf Jr., Shelby;" Capt. Octavius Coke,r Mr. MeGehee, cx Gov. W. W. Holdcn. Gov. T. J. Jar vis, Capt. E. U. Stamps, Capt. Jas. Glenn, of Rockincham ; Rev. Drs. At kinson, and Walkins, Mr. H. Battle, Mayor; Mr. King, member-eleet Irom Guilford, and a large number of others Chief Justice Smith administered the oath to every member ol the Electoral College. Maj. McClammy arose and made an exceedingly graceful speech, full ot congratulations and good feeling, and placed in nomination for President of the college Col. John N. Staples. Col. Staples made a happy address when he took the chair; and he appoint ed Messrs. Rowland and Gilliam Secre taries. - "Nominations for candidates for President and Vice President of the United States are now in order," said President StapTcs. Col. W. H. Kitchin arose and nomi nated for President the Honorable Gro ver Cleveland, of New York; and Col. Kitchin made an eloquent address one of the happiest efforts of his life, and worthy ot the high occasion. The nom ination was seconded by Mr. Lucas. Mr. B. H. Bunn eloquently nomina ted the Honorable Thomas A, Hen dricks, of Indiana, for Vice-President, which was seconded by Mr. Justice. The vote was taken by ballot print ed on North Carolina silk, a part of a bae. which bad been prepared by Mr. F. A. Olds and all the eleven votes were for Cleveland and Hendricks. Mr. B. II. Bunn was selected soecfal messenger to carry the returns to Wash ington. A man giving his name as Cashman and who is engaged in lecturing -and selling a book on the diseases of horses and cattle, called at the City Hall ye3terday, and in the course of conver sation stated that he knew a man from tbis city named Thomas Hansley who ied in Wiscansin a year or two ago, leaving an estate valued at $165 000. He further stated that be found Hansley a poor man and loaned him some money, with which he went to Pennsylvania aud made S80.000 in the course of two or three days, and divi ded the profits with Cashncan, giving the latter $40 000 for the use of the money. As Hansley formerly resid d in this city and has a wife now living in Smithville, besides other relatives here and in this vicinity, such a revela tion caused considerable excitement and a good deal of speculation, but there is so much of uncertainity in the matter that we do not believe it wonld bo wise to place much reliance upon any imaginary inheritance.
