JAMES. Editor Prop WILMINGTON. N. C. MONDAY. JANUARY 19. 1885. Entered at the Poetofflee at WDralnjcton. N. C. as eocond-clats matter. The completion of Ihe Mackey-Ben-nett cable makes the total length of submarine cables, according to Hit Electrician, about sxtj -eight thousand miles. Each cable contains an aver age of forty Btrands of wire, so that al together thero are over 2.500.000 miles of wire used in their construction, or ten times the distance trom the earth to the moon. Practically, all this has been laid within the last twenty five years; the greater part within a decade. Natural gas still makes the problem of existence in Pittsburg and Alleghany a little more uncertain than elsewhere. It keeps on explod.ug on the most unlooked-for occasions and in the most unheard-of places. Toe citizens of Alleghany City, who object to being unceremoniously blown through the roots of their residences without warn ing, are petitioning the council to pro hibit the laying of gas pipea except under the sapervision of the city offi cials. If they must be blown up thty want to be sure it is done according to law. The Nc.v York Tribune gives the following interesting figures: "While there is discussion over the grant to be made to Prince Albert Victor of Wules. it tviay be remembered that the royai family ot England gets probably a smaller revenue from the kingdom, in proportion to its wealth, than any other in Europe. Parliamentary allowances to ail ruembers of the family aggregate about $2,635,000. and the receipts from the dukedoms of Laceaster and Corn wall swell this to. say $3,200,000. which represents their total public income. The revenue oft the empire i3 probably something mote than $1.000,000 000. So the rojal income is oniy about three tenths. of 1 per cent, ot the State funds. Compare truso ligures with those rela ting fo the Czar. That monarch re ceives $12,250,000 out of a total nation al revenue of only a little more than $500,000,000 a year. Take another ex ample : The petty little prince of Mm tenegro appropriates 20,500 out of his nation's $300,000-not far Irom 7 per cent. And in addition to that he gets $24j0QO a year from liussia and $15,000 from Austria." The process of combination or con solidation of great trade and manufac turing interest? finds its latest illustra tion in the establishment ot a giant company to control the manufacture of stamped tinware. Last month the five largest fir m3 engaged in this, business formed an incorporation in New York State under the style of the Central StampHie Company. The five firms are James E Aikman &C6 , E Ketch am & Co.. K. Habermann, the Lalance ami Grosjeaa Manufacturing Company and the St. Louis Stamping Company. Factories will be operated in Newark, N. J.. Brooklyn. VVoodhaven and St. Louis. The consolidation is said to have been brought about by the com mon embarrassment of over produc tion. How it will affect ihe smaller concerns, scattered over the country, it Is not easy to foresee. The stamping business has revolutionized ihe tinware trade within a few years. A hundred articles of kitcheu furniture, which used to be the common work of every journeyman tinsmith, are now bought from the stamping factories, where they are made better, cheaper and more shapely than in the old way. The firms named above have already absorbed a great share of the trade, and the consolidation is expected toen able them to extend it by kivtDg all the benefit of special process, patents and patterns in which each has hereto fore enjoyed certain advantages. y Dun & Co.'s circular, at the begin ning of the new year, takes an encoura ging view ot the situation, while ad mitting its dark as well as its bright aspects. At first sight the year just ended has been a most disastrous one for business, but in reckoning the failures and the involved losses wo must keep in mind the great expansion of the business interests ot the country from year to year. Thus, the mortuary statistics of the past year would be teirilyiog unless we considered that the population has largely increased with iu a short time. More people die, and more firms fail nowadays than twenty years ago, because the country is much larger. The present is a transition period from high to low prices. These changes always involve temporary hardship, but always result in seasons of prosperity, especially wben, as now, they are due to over production ia the staples of food and the useful manu factures. At such a period ot transi tion the middle men are in a dangerous position, and the most careless or un lucky are liable lo be caught. Very many have suffered during the past year, but thsfpereentage of failures is ss than during other periods ot ds- i ton mjraMa. inns, onnng aoo. i - tw now ft rm in ever -83 merchants r.-R3 merchants faile 'a""" " - i nriv j while in 1878 the percentsge was one in every 64. The em ramus grow:h in the aezresate business capacity of the country appears very clearly by a glance at the figures. . In 1878 theie wra 674,741 busir.e-s house?; in 1834 or six years later there were 904.756. Here is an increase of 230, s 015 houses, or thirty-four per cent while the population has probably no increased more than twenty per cent. It is a suggestive fact that the greatest ratio of failnrf s exists in those sections where the business development has been most active, namely, in thej ex treme West and in the Southern States. Here there was the greatest desire to extend trade, the greatest enthusiasm and carelessness, and consequently the largest number ol wrecks. In steady going Canada, on the contrary, where 5n the six years from 1878 to 1884 the business houses only increased a few j thousands, the danger due to growth j are seen at a minimum. But of thte two it is better to have the evils of en terprise and progress than those of stagnation. JANUARY JOKES. A man of letters A sign painter.
