The Daily Review. The uaxiy Review has the largest bona fide circulation, ofany newspaper xniblished, in the city of Wilmington, .g MONDAY. JUAr 27. 1885 Encampment I tenia. The battalion drill anl dresa parade were witnessed by many hundred yes terday afternoon. A clouded k j tem pered the heat and I he enjoyment o! the brilliant spectacle waft mipVt1. rue roands wr marline with many carriages Oiled with Ndiesand children, and a thick rank of upcnauira n hn.t Cirdlcd the ticM f review. fh in ve menu of the diflon-nL regime n were adruirel t criueicd, He general ver dict being highly fvorablr. The parlv niorninj: drills get the men 1 3 work at 7 o'clock in thi morning. They are relieved lrm hard ork unil afirrnoon except such s they chKj.n to impose on themsHve. Such saw this morning in the drill ol the Mulli gan Guards, where all torts of outland ish uniforms, extravagant movements, odd weapons, and a broad burlesque on the brilliant drum major of the 31 Reg iment furnished fun fr men and lookers on. Tho men, with the soldier' rntui tion, find abundant material for amusement. Mock mort-martiaU are one source, uther-mm mcir pleasure in singing and mu-ic. of which there is rich material in th- cam:. There are pleasant interchanges ol courtesies, anu m" mm "mocia forming c.Y.su and figneablc acquain tance. . . a i -n (ten. U. Doubledny. of Abbeville, spent part of the iii'minsf at Head quarters, in pleasant chat with Col. Black on war matters. There is a pleasant mlxtuie of both rrniot rpnrosentnd on eaaid. In one company, there are (mil regulars of the IT S.Tnfantrv. One of them was lone a sergeant in Col. Black' old regiment, tho 17th infantrv. We found at headquarters all the nlnnels in conference, a kind ot mili tary confab, to which wc were per mittPil to lend an ear but to wlr.ch we will nr.t irivp ft tonfflie. The guards are enforcing very rigid militarv rule, and woe to the straegler who tries to enter the lines without a pass. This is right but sometimes owkward for the tresDasser. The Glee Club and tho Quartette r.lnh. hoth of the Second Regiment. furnish exnuisite music which regales thn par of delighted companions until 10 o'clock; then silence falls on the camp and the stern laws of war control to nnietnde and- to sleep all but the laithlul sentinels who pace their weary rounds till daylight doth appear. Ashanlle Cilizcn, 2WA. 8TATK NEWS' Asbeville Citizen: This morning a little son of Mr. Tho9. Duckett, on Cherry Street, was pouring oil from a can on a Ore, when the can ignited and exploded, burning the little fellow very badly from the hips down. He is not latally hurt, but painfully bo. Mr. JK C. Linwood was passing at the tioie, heard the explosion, ran in and gave assistance. Newbern Journal: There is at least oneman in North Carolina ready to declare war against baseball playing, and he has the fever, t v. Mr. A: L, Follett. of this city, while sitting at the market dock on Thursday evening, en joying the cool and invigorating south ern breeze, had eni pitched into him. A heavy baseball came from a giant pitcher, who was practicing with others on the dock, and took him bo tween the eyes coming at an angle ot about 45 degrees, breaking bis nose and giving him a horrible black eye. Dr. Duffy was called to treat him and set his nose. He is doing tolerably well, but is in favor of declaring the business a nuisance at once. Goldsboro Argus: Hurrah for the Goldsboro. Snow Hill and Greenville Railroad! Greene county carried the 30.000 subscription measure yesterday by about 307 majority of a full vote ot. the county: so we were telephoned from Snow Hill at 11 o'clock last night. The road will now boom lively and will goon be an actual reality. A right bloody and serious.-though net thought to be fatal, cutting affair, took place in a bar room in Little "Washington," this city, lato Friday night, between two white men. One of them only was cut. and he is 3aid to have been too. drunk to cut back. It was not the cut ting man's fault, however, that tho cut man was not cut to death, as the wound is in a most dangerous location. News and Observer: Cleveland coun ty rolls up a list of 121 pension seekers under the recent act of the Legislature granting pensions to maimed Confed erates. &c. Oar market; showed a decided improvement yesterday. Everything was in abundance, save money, and prices favored buyers. Fruits and watermelons were unusually fine, and prices ot the latter ranging from 25 cents down. The Wash ington. D. C correspondent of the Washington, N. C, Gazette, in a letter dated the 20th inst.. says : "It is high ly probable that Hon. D. G. Fwle will be honored by this administration in some signal way which I shall not now name." And it is about time the thing was done. Asbeville Advance: Mr. J. T. Scott, who was the mcst seriously injured of the Goldsboro Rides, and who has been kept at the depot since bis arrival, was yesterday evening brought uptown and is at the Grand Central, where he, with all the wounded, are receiving the best medical treatment and attention. We are pleased to state that his condition continues to improve. In our last issue we published a card, signed by the Captain and First Sergeant of the Goldsboro Rifles, who were on the train at the time of the wreck, saying emphatically that the accident was not due to any tampering on their part with the danger-cord, or anything else. The report that the accident was caused by improper conduct on tho part of any member of the company, we are satis fied, does great violence to truth. It is the opinion of every one on the train, and those outside who witnessed the rate at which the train was running, except th3 ''railroad men" themselves, that the accident was due to reckless ness on the part of the engineer. We do not desire to do any one injustice in this matter. We simply desire to place the responsibility where it properly be longs. Charlotte Observer: Mr. Nat Gray, who has long been engaged as local theatre agent, has-completed arrange ments for the erection of a new building in this city to be dedicated to the opera. The new opera house will be located on Trade street nearly opposite , the resi dence of Mrs. Fox and near the mint, Mr. Gra? having recently purchased a portion of the tot on the corner east of the mint. Work will commence upon the building, we are told, next week and it will be pushed to a rapid com, pletion. The building, as at present designed, will be one story, with a 30 toot ceilinsr. the interior to contain tw galleries. In addition to the floor chairs, and the stage, with its equipments, will embrace all. the improvements known to the art. As intimated in yester day's Observer, the storm of last 'I hurs day evening was very destructive in the section of country southeast of the citv. Mr. W C. Graham, one ot the sufferers, was in town yesterday and gave a report of the ravages of the storm Its greatest severity was through a narrow section of country, lour miles from the city. The wind was very strong and blew down whole fields of corn, but what survived the wind was ruined by the flood that tollowed. Mr. Graham lost by wiad and water fully orb half of his corn crop, and a number of shade trees around bis house were blown down, one of them striking his porch in falling, and damaging it to a considerable extent. Other. suffer ers by tho same storm were Esquire Hilton, Wm. Beatty. Jalius Weaver 11 ibert Graham. Gilbert Helms ,and Neil Baker. COMMERCIAL NEWS. WILMINGTON MARKET. July 27-4 P. M.
