GERMS.' Their Universal Prevalence, Danjer . ous CZiarneter and Ilovr CUey , LlTe and Aro Kiiled. ' The Germaas consume lare amounts of uncooked pork, and often jet living animals called trichinaa into their blood, which cause the most terrible death. Americans draw in the perms of disease and death with every breath. ?aiar:ru miasma, sewer gas and the thousand pcisous m the air, in food and in water are at vrar with health and life all the while.. The blood that cir culates in human veins is composed of num bers of small corpuscles that resemble ani mals and when anything poisonous gets into the blood it becomes just like stagnant water, full of living animals th&t feed upon each other and upon the blood itself. And yet not one person in fifty is free from 'Blood poisoning in some form. Every mo ment of the-iife. whether uv.'akb or asleep a million poisouous animals, invisible to the naked eye, are feeding upon the .very elements that make and sustain life. These are foot; they are solemn truths and they demand j the most serious attention. These germ? must b killed; they must b annihilated. But how? Prof. Austin Flint of Bellevue Hos pital College, New York, says: "The ju dicious use of alcoholic .itinru hints is one of the striking characteristics of pro?rress in the practice of medicine durin-r the last half century." while Dr. J. P. Gilbert of Lyons, N. Y. says: "'rom my experience in the treatment of chronic diseases of a wasting and debilitating nature I have fre quently found it necessary to advise the use of stimulants, and in my opinion Duffy's Pure Malt Whl key for purity and other desirable qualities cannot be surpassed for such pur poses. Its action seems to be that of a pure stimulant, with none of the inebri ating effects which are too often found in-BO-called medicinal whiskej's" When we consider the terrible amount of poison that is in the blood, and the misery and death it is causing, and when we realize that its germs can all be driven out by a stimulant (not intoxicant) like Duffy's Pure Malt Whiskey, we have cause for thankfulness that modern science is doing so much for mankind in removing disease, destroying its cause and bringing health end happiness instead of misery and death. Most of the leading people of the land are realizing the value of this Whiskey, and many whose prejudices have heretofore kept them entirely from the use of spirits are seeing its pure ana valuable qualities in warding off diseases, and use it regularly In their homes. The IlcraliVs report is as follows: Five thousand ex-Confederates, marching to the stirring strains of 'Dixie1' and waving the bullet riven colors of secession, tramped through the -muddy streets this morning awakening the echoes with their ear pliting yells. No such exciting scenes have been enacted in any city in the South since the war. Tfc One of the great railroad magnates of New York said, a fe,w days ago, that t he days of great railroad build ing enterprises had passed as there were now enough lines to transact all the business of the country. But it seems to us that, while the above statement may be in the main twie so far as the North and 'West are veterans, aroused to an ultra-dem-1 concerned, it cannot apply with the onstration oitch by the presence of Davis, were exceedingly extrava gant in their actions and remarks. Hundreds bivouaced in the park and sipped from the canteen which served them m the days or hostili ties, while many were arrayed in the caps of gray, with the musty and poor haversacks at their sides. Battle flags perforated by federal bullets ' hung over the strikingly realistic encampment while camp fires illuminated the suggestive sur roundings. The soldiers were abroad at an early hour, many equipped with their service paraphernalia all bedecked with miniatures of the flag under which they fought. At about eleven o'clock a com mittee of sons of veterans, headed by the president of the organiza tion, a son of Congressman Blount, rode to the Johnston mansion and were received by the Davis family. Our prayer is that (iod, who has ever been just, may still care for you, and when the end . 1 I A 1 X comes crown you witn glory mat never fades in a cause that never dies." Mr. Davis read the words 'slowly, and then with much effort spoke as follows: "My young countrymen, words cannot express my gratitude. 1 am proud to know that you hold in reverence the memory and prin ciples of your fathers." Miss Winnie Davis .was then addressed by Mr. Blount who said: "Aliss Uavis, our fathers revered your father, and we as their sons revere you for the many virtues you exemplify, and this sentiment fully expresses our "feelings. " He then read the tribute on the grey ribbon of a similar sou venir badge: "With our hearts we welcome thee, we sons of -veterans; for thy match less father's sake we love theet chaste child of the Codfederacy; for tlrine own and his we revere and honor thee." Miss Davis feelingly replied. Speeches were then delivered by Governor Gordon, Senator 4Colquitt and ex-Governor Waitts, of Ala bama. It was reserved for the afternoon, however, to witness the most inter esting scenes. Mr. Davis decided to review the veterans from the porch of the Johnston mansion. The various regiments bore the torn Hags which led them in many en gagements, and as they moved up the hill they presented an impres sive appearance. The bands played "Dixie" and the soldiers yelled themselves hoarse. When Mr. Davis was assisted to the porch fully three thousand men, many with gray hair, some with wooden legs, others with tenantless coat sleeves who fringed the fence, suddenly forgot their in firmities in their desire to see the noted Confederate, and leaping the barricade charged up the hid pell mell, drove the police from their path and gathered about the porch to the exclusion of the marching men. Mr. Davis, surrounded by his wife and daughters, Governor Gor don, Senator Colquitt and others stood on the porch and bowed in re cognition of the tumultuos yelling. "God bless Jeff Davis!" and "Long live our President!" were repeatedly heard. Such crowding, such excite ment and such yelling was unparal leled in past war history. The veter ans fairly went mad with joy at the privilege of greeting, perhaps for tha, last time, the last hope of the Confederacy. Following the'cavalry which led the procession, came the remnant of the Third Georgia regi ment carrying a melancholy looking fragment of the old battle ffag. As Mr. Davis caught sight of the oanner ne raisea nimseii up oy a supreme effort and kissed its historic folds. With the assistance of Sena tor Colquitt he waved the colors over the heads of the crowds, which were thrown into a delirium of ec stacy by this extraordinary display. The yelling kept up unceasingly, and it was not until it was announ ced that Mr. Davis desired to speak that the exultant multitude -could be induced to desist from shouting. Supported at either side by his wife and daughters he took a corner of the flag in his hand, tears streamed down bis wrinkled cheeks and his voice grew husky with emotion. Trembling under the strain of -the moment, with eyes red with hot, scalding tears, Mr. Davis presented a touching picture. His family were moved to tears by the sight. They well know how seriously the exer tions have an effect on his enfeebled energies, but they were powerless to interfere. He would speak, and this is what he said: - . Hundreds of miles of railroad conld be built in North Carolina that would be of advantage in de veloping her resources and bringing them to market in competition with our sister States.
