In Feb ruary, 1851, President Fillmore np Iointed Ogdeu Hoffman Jmle of tlie United SStates District Court in California, then just admitted into the ITniou as a State. Mr. H oilman was then but 28 years old, and, af ter a service of thirty-seven years, he is now less than GO years old. This record is probably without a precedent in the judicial annals of the nation. The Nev Vor.k Stm thus sums up the situation, of tlie great German lovo match: "There are three Vio-j torias of three successive genera tions thus named troubling Europe just 110 w. There is Victoria, tueen of England and Empress of India, who is about to enter on the 70rh year of her ae. There is herdauu ter Victoria, the Empress of Ger many, who is 48 years old. There is thi last-named Victoria's youthful daughter, Princes Victoria, whose mother is an Empress, and whose two grandmothers are au Empress and an ex-Empress. These three Victorias have made up their minds that the Priacess Victoria shall wetl the Prince of Itattenberg. They are determined to break down every barrier that ran be raised against the match. The Czar of Russia may dislike it, the mighty Bismarck dis approve of it, and the powerful classes of Germany stand out against it; but the three Victorias are notto be outwitted or controlled iu the matter. I heir purpose is iiAetl, and each of them is possessed of a strong will iu pursuit of it. Questions of State policy may be thrust aside in the Court of love, and the peace of nations may be imperilled for the sake of a happy match. It was evi dent from the first that the three Victorias would carry the day. The Prince of Battenfiorg lias won the support of the eldest of them and her daughter, both Empresses, and he has won the heart of th young est of rlieitt. Suc.Ii a combination, thus iu harmony bound, what or who can resist T" . f The State Convention is but little more than one month on and the county conventions must all be held within the next thirty days. The primaries which am the fountains whence the water comes up pure and undefiled from the people, says the Kaleigh AY-u1 and Ofiscwr are still closer at hand. The people should attend them and select their representatives with care. The del egates to the county conventions ought to be iu accord with the pop ular sentiment and their views ought to be known before they are commissioned to represent the peo ple. In every township there should be an expression of the popular wish and the delegates iu the county con ventions should seek to give elTdct to the will of those they represent. In like manner the delegates to the State Convention should be mindful of their representative character. But in onW to prevent any misrep resentation the people should be careful to know exactly what their representatives propose to do, and should send to the conventions only thoe who agree with them in senti ment. During the next fortnight the friends of the candidates ought to be at work doing what they can to make their favorite the favorite of their township, so that when the township meetings are held the bat tle will be fodght out at home. Af ter the townships select their dele gates the matter has passed beyond the control of the people. It then becomes a matter for the delegates. If the people are indifferent; if they have no choice; if they do not care who are to be the nominees, then the delegates may well consult their own views of what the occasion re quire; but if the people favor auy particular man they ought to ex? press themselves at tbe township testifies: 'I can rec moicnd Electric Bitters as tn very bet remedy.
