Internal PanUliment and the Nature of Eternal Punishment Preached by KeV. F. W. K. Peschan, Pastor of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sunday, April 16; 1888. Ilev. P. W. EL Peschau" has been asked to publish the two discourses he preached on last Sunday "on the subject previously announced. It affords ti9 pleasure to publish 1 the following outlines thereof. It is, of course, impossible to do the" ser mons lust ice bv erivinjr so snort a sketch thereof. The textof the morning sermon was Matth, xxv, 46, "And these shall go away into everlasting pun ishment." These are the words of the son of God. You, as Christian people, I, as a Christian pastor, must either receive and believe them, or re ject them. It is a remarkable fact that the New Testament which brings us the gladdest news of God's mercy in Christ, also brings us the. clearest, strongest, and most numerous lessons on eter nal punishment. And, not only this, but these lessons come not from the anostles but from Christ Himself, as if Divinity in its wisdom was un willing to have even the grandest 8. After first considering some erroneous opinions, objection?, etc. he following points which are some of the leadiner ones from the manv We will not discuss punishment but its be ing everlasting. As Christians we believe the words of the text. 1. Because we even believe that matter is eternal. Matter may change its form bat is indestruct ible. If matter has this character istic, surely God would not make the soul, which in every way is superior to matter, lack the essen tial property of ever existing. Our Saviour in speaking of Judas says, "good were it for that man if he had never been born." Surely this means that this was because the punishment to come upon him was eternal and that he could not photo-1 escape from it and therefore not to be born at an, was preieraoie 10 the punishment of the guilty, be- cause it is eternal. 2. Because, it is following out the law and order of things in this world. The word of God is the basis of human law, there are pun ishments for life here. Those full off from their fellow men for life.- We place men in penitentiaries f "r all the days of their life for violating human law, the Divine la v therefore which deals with eternal things must attach eternal punishment. God would be dealing unjustly to ward those who do sincerely try to lovo and serve Him. If punishment hereafter is limited, why have pun ishment at all on earth? Why not do away with law and order? Then the murderer woniu oe tne best man and the drunkard the wisest man and the licentious the happiest man. If we can think ourselves into eternity at all, we can reason from analogy that its laws applied will be eternal. 3. History is full of references to it. Even infidels have spoken ot this doctrine, in their histories, and iu their articles on retribution have recognized it. 4. The Church in all ages lias ac cented these words just as our Lord . T uttered tnem. a nis is proyen (ij oy the writinirs of the early Church Fathers, or in the opinions of the leadiner men of God iif early times. from the days of Barnabas, the coin- panioTt friend and reiiow-worKman with Paul, down to days when the Church formed her creeds. In some instances it refers to where duration is limited, but -this is be cause human language is imperfect. Human language is not as perfect as human thought, and therefore this is easily understood. The term in the New -Testament aioon' occurs 10S times, and always means eternal. Even the Greek classical authors use it in their writings' in this sense Its very component parts " give lis the right meaning, as al means ever, and oon means existing, together ever-existing. " I it is laugnt oy, contrast, in so very many places we find the same word referring to life also, as in our text, "These shall go away into ever lasting punishment, but the right eous into life etcrjial." Eternal life and eternal death are thus; often mentioned in contrast in tne same passage. If life, blessedness and re ward are eternalj -then, also must suffering and puni$hmentbe eternal. 7. OurSaviourtabghtit in so many or His paraoies. f ine tooiisn vir gins, the servants punished, Lazarus and Dives, --all bring it before onr minds in strong : twords. Abraham plainly tells Dives; that there, is great gulf fixed. This teaches the impossibility to j escape. So too Dives prayed Abraham to send Lazarus to - bis brethren,. He did not ask Abraham to send" him as he knew there was no release for him: 8. Would God allow His Son to suffer the shame, agony aud death upon tne tjross, it it would not save men from everlasting punishment? Surely there can be but one answer to this, if trod were too merciful to punish a creature for gross and shameful '. crimes. I He would be all too merciful to .allow the iJonJ of His love to suffer so, i His mercy would begin jn the Divine household. The Bible plainly; teaches: ''For God so loved the! world, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever beheveth in Him -'might not perish, but have everlasting life," This perish certainly does not mean to save from death, for all men die, it means it can mean only, perish foreverj From this may God deliver us. uxd has given us all that is necessary to win us for Heaven and may we reach it and have eternal life. 10. Everlasting punishment is also taught by the fact I that it was pre pared for the devil and his angels Had it been better and wisest, God would have destroyed the .devil and his angels. The fact that He did not proves that He cannot from the very, nature of things destroy spirits If He banished the devil and his angels into everlasting suffering, for whom Uhnst did not die, how mueh more will He: not punish" those who have been thus honored and helped by God.
