Ignatius Donnelly's "Great Cryp togram" han been published in Lon don, and the cryptogram part is re ceived with derision. The Standard, in a lonir review, shows plainly that Donnelly's figures are without sya tern or basis of fact; he is, itsayt, the author of hi own 6tory, arbitrarily selecting his words and then bewil dering the reader with a reticulation of figures to make a semblance vf justification for them. The Standard and other papers treat with much respect the literary argument against Shakespeare's authorship as a solid aud conscientious piece of criticism, containing indel nothing new. but the old matter very strongly ar ranged. One of Donnelly's points against- Shakespeare's character is ruined, however, by the opportune announcement of Charles Athill Hluemautlepurxiiivnut at arms in the Heralds' College, that he has ex amined the papers relating to the grant of the Shakespeare arms, and finds that a patent was undoubtedly issued to John Shakespeare, father of the poet, in 15, upon his estab lishment of the fact that his social position warranted the issue. 'Don nelly had charged fraud upon Shakespeare in t he use of arms. The Washington correspondent of the Baltimore Sun says: "A signifi cant fact in American politics is the melting away of the enormous Re publican majorities in the . .great States of the Northwest. For many years these majorities ranged in sev eral of these States from fifty to one hundred thousaud.
