Club features will be entirely exclu ded, the object being to establish a society something on the line of the New York Historical Society. The present membership numbers be tween four and five hundred, and it is expected that this will be more than doubled when a permanent home is secured. A number of men now living in the South, who make periodical trips to this city, have ex pressed a wish to join the Society when such a meeting place is provi ded, where the' may meet old friends and acquaintances." . ... - . For the first time iji the history of the country 11 State is about to elect two United States Senators, each of whom will be given a full .six years' term. When the original States first elected Senators, each Legislature chose two men, but the Constitution provided that "immediately after they shall be assembled, in conse quence of 'the first election, they shall be divided, as equally as may, into th ree classes, the term of one class expiring in two j ears, the sec ond in four, and the third in six, so that one-third of the body should be chosen every second year. Tluis New York elected Rufus King and Philip Schuyler, but Schuyler fell into the first class, so that histerm expired in two years. In like man ner, when Colorado came into the Union in 1877, Chaffee dropped into the first class, with only two years to serve.while Teller was allotted to the six years' class. Of course, after the terms for each State have thus been fixed at the outset, each succes sor to a Senator of any class is cho sen for six years. Even if a Legisla ture meets ouiy once in two years, it can never happen that it will have to choose more than one Senator in the natural course of things (death or resignation excepted,) since the term of his colleague will not expire until after the next Legislature has been chosen. Louisiana, however, by the ne Constitution adopted in 1879, gave the Legislature a four years1 term, and as a result it hap pens that the body chosen last month must choose not only a Seua tor for the term beginningiu Marclr 1889, but also one for the term be" giuuing in March, 1891. Mr. Gibson., whose term expires next year, easi ly secured the. caucus nomination for re-election, but there seems like ly to be a hard contest over the oth er seat. . in Hive: i shouted back in j unison: "Good morninc. vour roval hiffhuess.'
