O ; crease of thousands monthly. The Uritfsh Medical Journal con tains a full aud scientific account of a remarkable oieratioii recently performed by Dr. Oersung. of Vien na, !eiug the transplantation ot a nerve from a rabbit to a man. The patient is Prof, von Fleischl, a dis tinguished physiologist of the Uni versity of Vienna. Sixteen years ago he was poisoned by acu,dur- ng a post-mortem. His thumb had to be amputated, a disease of the. nerve intervened, and after some years the whole system of nerves of the thumb and two first fingers were affected and became very painful. Hersung's operation consisted in akiug as long a piece as possihle of the sciatic nerve from a rabbit. which was still palpitating, and in serting it in the place of six centi meters of the diseased median nerve cut from Flehichl's hand. For a few tours there was great pain. This hen entirely subsided and healing egan. -Two .months have now elapsed, and the pain has not return-! ed. The success is believed to be i permanent. The announcement by the Mexi can war department to its border garrisons that hereafter death will be the punishment inflicted for crossing the United States frontier armed and interfering with our au thorities and laws will belikely toput an' end to affairs like those of Noga Ies ami Eagle Pass. In the former the guilty officers were condemned to death by court martial, and Amer ican intercession was made for them, in the latter the guilty were senten ced to ten years' imprisonment. Se vere as is the punishment now re solved upon, it is clear that. the of fense is not only one of the greatest that can be committed, but particu larly to be guarded against, because it imperils international relations. It happened in both the cases spo ken of that the invading parties, consisting of four or fl'o officers aud men each, were handled a good deal more roughly than those whom they Attacked; but had the result been different, and an American citizen killed, there might have been a rush of the angry border population to the Mexican town of JNogales or across the river to Piedras Negras. The Mexican Government does not propose to run such risks, and hence the penalty it annonnces for this conduct.
