Completion of the Seacoaat Railway
Addrvtaea by the President and Others.
Saturday, the 16th" day of June,'88
will "ever be looked upon as the
date of the completion of one.pf
Wilmington's greatest and most sub
stantial enterprises, for on that day
a line of railroad connecting the
ocean and the mountains was finish
ed ami turned over to the- Directors
for operation. ST -
At 4:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon
the special train, advertised to take
thu Board of Directors and their
families and invited guests to the
Hummocks pulled out of Front
Street Depot, and twerity minutes
later landed its passengers safely on
the Hummocks at Wrightsville.
At about 5 o'clock Mr. W. II.
Chadbourn, the contractor, stepped
forth, his countenance beaming with
pride and enthusiasm, and addressed
the Board of Directors in the follow
ing happy manner:
Mr. President and Gentlemen of the
Hoard of Directors of the Wilming
ton Scaeoant llailroad .
It now becomes my pleasant duty,
as one of the contractors, to turn
over to you this completed railroad;
but before doing so, I wish to say
jut a word :
It was early in March when the
final contract was made with us,
and but few even of the most san
guine thought it could be finished
before the first of August, while
very many contended that we could
not complete it in time for any
travel this season. Yet, in less than
one hundred working days, on June
10th, your road is ready for opera
tion, although it . has a mile and a
quarter of heavy trestling in it.
And now, Mr. President and
gentlemen of the Board of Directors,
we as contractors, wish in this pub
lic manner to acknowledge that but
for your valuable time, counsel and
advice, which we have so frequently
sought and which you have so
cheerfully given, it would have
been an impossibility for us to have
so succeeded. .
1 have said the road was-completed.
Yet one thing is lacking a
single spike and all is done. May
this spike in its purity and value be
symbolic of the future of this little
road.
Mr.President, I leave the honor of
driving this silver-spike to you.
Mr. Latimer, the President of the
road, upou receiving the silver
spike from Mr. Chadbourn, re
sponded in the following eloquent
and appropriate remarks;
Ladies and Gentlemen: Those of
you who can recall the ever gener-
ous ana onen-nearieu iiospuauty
offered to visitors at the Sound will.
I know, rejoice that by means of
this road, its healthful pleasures
and innocent recreations can now
be enjoyed by so milch larger a
number of those who, in this age of
ceaseless eltort and never ending
struggle, surely need a place like
this where they may rest their tired
muscles and cool their heated brows.
By a wise dispensation of Provi
dence such struggles aud efforts
are necessary, not only to earn the
right to rest from our labors, but
also to provide a place in which to
enjov such well earned rest.
It is then to the ceaseless efforts
aud unfailing courage of the direc
tors and subscribers of the Wil
mington Seacoast llailroad Com
pany that we owe the opening of so
fitting a resort as this in which to
spend a quiet season, free from the
cares and worries of our work -day
life, and to breathe with never end
ing delight the life-giving breezes
which llow from the bosom of the
ocean.
I say that it is to the enterprise
and courage of these gentlemen
that we owe the .building of this
railroad and the establishment of
this resort, since it did indeed re
quire, some courage to undertake
and carry out this work.. "
For who, a few short years ago.
would have believed that the shun
ned and despised Hummock, the
resort of the solitary heron, and the
breeding place of pestiferous in
sects, could be made to become so
charming a place us it Is now seen
to oei
Firm, however, in their convic
tions, iu the skill and untiring en
ergy of the Messrs. Chadbourn yas
found the way to carry out their
ideas, and I am more than proud
and honored to stand before you to
day as the embodied will of these
gentlemen.
Proud, because this is so essen
tially a home enternrise. conceived
and carried out by local judgment,
energy and capital; and honored, by
the confidence reposed in me by
such men.
But, my friends, while you may
sincerely wish that these gentlemen t

Daily Iifcvipw of our city, should
fail to see that our- Morning Star is
now rising or that a tireless Messen
ger is proclaiming tothe world the
daily record of Wilmington's advancement.-
. .
The busy hum of enterprise and
progress is now heard with equal
distinctness along the banks of the
Cape Fear, as" on the slopes or the
Yadkin Valley, and the fertile fields
of Carolina Central will never be
too numerous "to supply the ever
crowing: business of our Atlantic
Coast Line. . .... . . r
A.ud now, ladies and gentlemen,
you will I Knpw join me, in wishing
t but this slver spike may rivet the
missing hTik in that- great; chain,
which should ever bind pur Eastern
shores to the fertile plains of our
midland counties, and the majestic
mountaius of our West, forming as.
one great and harmonious whole,'
the glorious old State of North Car
olina . "
At the. conclusion of President
Latimer's speech the Cornet' Con
cert Club rendered the "Old North
State" in such a masterly style as to
cause the assembly to join in and
sing the -chorus in a regular "Old
North Carolina way. 11 Hon. George
Davis was then called upon and ad
dressed the crowd in an exceedingly
interesting and historic sketch of
Wilmington in its earlier days. Mr.
Davis paid a glowing tribute to the
jndetnitable pluck and energy which
has always ' characterized her citi-
zens, as wnen ner sons mer-. aim
agreed to build a railroad to Ral
eigh, they actually subscribed more
thai) three times the amount of her
taxable property" to the enterprise,
aud when the news came that Ral.
eigh would subscribe nothing they
determined not to connect with that
city, but to build ope hundred miles
more of road and connect withWel
dn. To-day the result of that un
dertaking is a mighty factor in one
of the greatest lines of traffic in the
world. He also said that there were
advantages and disadvantages in all
things; that the 'great ocean " was
dotted here and there with the sails
of vessels of commerce which could
no longer plough the majestic-waters
of Banks Channel; because the
Seacoast Railway had built a bridge
across it with a twenty foot draw
instead of a forty foot draw. 44Still,"
he went on, "there is consolation in
most things and the consolation to
be derived from the twenty foot
draw is that there is no danger of
men-of-war of a hostile nation com
ing in at the Bank's Channel and
bombarding the front doors of the
residents of Wrightsville."
. At the conclusion of Mr. Davis'
remarks the band played and Mr.
Wm. Latimer, President of the
road, swung the sledge and missed
the spike. With the'remark that he
was not accustomed to driving
spikes, Mr. Latimer again went for
that spike and drove it up to its
head with a few well-directe J blows.
After the silver spike had been
driven. Hon. - A. M. Waddell was
called for by the crowd. ' Col.; Wad
dell responded in his usual happy
manner, warning spoony-young
couples to lookout for green snakes
and other pestiferous insects, which
he had been informed by a gentle
man not addicted to"seeiug snakes,"'
abounded on the ' Hummocks. He
closed his remarks with the regret
that President Latimer had driven
the silver spike home so isecu rely
that he was unable to take it away.
Altogether the occasion' was one
of the most delightful that was ever
know in the history of our city an"d
the fact that the - iarge train
could not accommodate all at one
time and that some of the excursion
ists did not get back to the city until
after 10 o'clock did not in realitv
detract from the pleasures of the
day. .Everybody was in a, good
humor and in high spirits and all
voted the occasion .4 u. splendid
success.
